s the 2014-2015 school year comes to an end, Harley Avenue Primary School celebrated the academic accomplishments of kindergarten students with family and friends during their Kindergarten Celebration. To kick off the event, each student presented a writing piece about his or her favorite memory of kindergarten. Students recited a poem, spelling out each letter of the word kindergarten, and sang original songs about topics they learned.

Dwarf sailboats with colored masts soar along the water. A speeding motorboat tows a teenage lad on jet skis through the frothy wake, churning spumes of cool water against his sinewy body. A tawny middle age man perched in a kayak, outfitted in a life vest, navigates his oars right and left. Brilliant sunlight reflects the glossy orange hue of the boat’s hull. A young woman with auburn hair streaming behind her shoulders, in pink tank top and striped shorts, pedals a bicycle pathside. She waves hi to a senior man and wife strolling the road during their recreation walk.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”

Big Shoes To Fill First-grade student Peter Bell at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District had the opportunity to fill the principal’s shoes for the entire school day on May 14th. As part of a fundraiser for the Elwood Education
Endowment, Bell won the chance to shadow Principal Elissa Toubin and assist in a variety of duties. Bell read “Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes,” by Eric Litwin to classes, assisted with the morning and afternoon announcements, participated in a phone conference with
Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo and James H. Boyd Intermediate School Principal Denise Toscano, and even oversaw the rehearsal for the kindergarten celebration, which took place the following day.

Challenge Index Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District has been named to The Washington Post’s annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the United States. In this year’s Challenge Index, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School is ranked No.

Kindergarten Celebration As the 2014-2015 school year gradually comes to an end, Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District celebrated the academic accomplishments of kindergarten students with family and friends during their Kindergarten Celebration on May 15th. To kick off the celebration, each student presented a writing piece about his or her favorite memory of kindergarten.
Following an introduction by Harley Avenue Primary School Principal Elissa Toubin, kindergarten students recited a poem, spelling out each letter of the word kindergarten, and sang original songs about topics they learned during the school year and moving up to first grade. Coordinated by physical education teacher Stephen Robins, parents cheered on kindergarteners as they participated in several
outdoor activities and games. To conclude the event, parents, friends and students returned indoors to enjoy snacks in the classroom. “Our children have learned so much this year,” said Toubin. “They have learn to read, write and do math but most importantly they have developed friendships within their classes and across the grade that will last a lifetime.”

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern presented a Proclamation to Second Precinct “Stop DWI - Top Cop” Joshua Parsons for leading the Precinct in arrests of those driving while intoxicated (DWI) at a Pre-Prom meeting at Half Hollow Hills High School West Thursday night. Officer Parsons has served with the Suffolk County Police Department for five years and within that short time, has earned numerous achievements and awards including the 2014 Meritorious Police Service Award for lifesaving, the 2014 Excellent Police Duty Award for DWI enforcement, the 2014 MADD Recognition of Excellence Award and the 2014 William J. Lindsay Exemplary Service Award. Legislator Stern spoke to students and parents during the mandatory Pre-
Prom meeting about the dangers of drinking and driving and emphasized the importance of being safe on the roads as Memorial Day marks the start of the “100 Deadliest Days,” in which DWI incidents and fatalities involving young people peaks from Memorial Day until Labor Day. For this reason, Suffolk County enacted the “Social Host Law” to help mitigate underage drinking by holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing minors to consume alcohol at parties and other social gatherings held at their homes. Legislator Stern created and served as Chairman of the Underage Drinking Task Force to address the critical issue of educating young people and their families about the dangers of underage drinking and to help reduce the epidemic of alcohol related accidents that occur far
too frequently in our community. “It is my hope that through education and through measures such as the “Social Host Law” we can help reduce the incidence of underage drinking and prevent many of the tragic accidents that injure and claim the lives of too many young people and those with whom they share the road,” he said. “As students celebrate Prom and Graduation, it is important to make summer a time to celebrate, not mourn the loss of a loved one,” Legislator Stern said. “I am very proud to honor Suffolk County Police Officer Joshua Parsons on receiving the ‘STOPDWI Top Cop Award.’ His leadership and dedication to duty has saved countless lives by removing drunk drivers from our roads and he has earned our thanks and gratitude.”

A Random Act Of Kindness On Memorial Day 2015, at 9:00 a.m., eight veterans of the Marine Corps, members of Marine Corps Veterans of Long Island, Mercury Detachment (PO Box 236, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776) formed a firing detail to fire a rifle salute at the Port Jefferson Fire Department for their Memorial Day ceremonies.
Marines had some time before their next firing detail at Calverton National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. They decided to have breakfast at the Mount Sinai Diner, located at 191 Route 25A in Mount Sinai. The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on
up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And
for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute.
To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The critical bystander links for the chain of survival include calling 9-1-1, early CPR and early defibrillation.
