Boy Scout Troop 12 of Huntington does it again! In addition to having in-person meetings every Wednesday since January 2021, the scouts have been busy with a Shawnee Mountain Ski Trip in February, Alpine Camping trip/hike in NJ in March, Yawgoog Scout Reservation 2-nighter in Rhode Island in April and a Pennsylvania Bike-hike in May. We are also very proud of our Food Drives throughout the pandemic as well as Clothing Drives to support our local community ---all held observing strict COVID guidelines from the CDC, New York State, and the Suffolk County Council
(Scouts BSA). The latest innovative blockbuster was the Virtual Pancake Breakfast, instead of our popular, normal major in-person fundraiser cancelled due to COVID restrictions. Troop 12 was not to be deterred thanks to a genius idea by Committee Member Jenn Carrillo. She came up with the plan to put all of the elements needed for a Pancake Breakfast for Mum (distribution was to be held the Saturday before Mother’s Day) in a small box for a small fee. The Scouts gathered wood from the famous “scrap bin” at Kleet Lumber where slats trimmed from large boards
being turned into molding are offered to the public for free. Over the course of two weekends in our Charter Organization’s parking lot (United Methodist Church of Huntington/Cold Spring Harbor), the Scouts constructed, painted and affixed rope handles to the serving trays to allow the “fixin’s” to be presented in a lovely fashion. The breakfast goodies were Pancake batter, syrup, blueberry muffins and chocolate chips. Over 130 “Breakfasts” were served at a convenient pickup location (at our beloved UMC parking lot) and the coffers of Troop 12 (as well as the bellies of the tray recipients) were full!
MERCATO CUCINA Our Story
Growing up in Brooklyn was an adventure. My grandmother Clementina (known to those close to her as Mindy) started my love affair with cooking at 11 years old by teaching me how to make her classic spaghetti pomodoro. A simple dish that is still one of my favorites to this day. Sundays were my grandmother’s “shopping days’’ and often us kids were sent to at least 5 different stores to get only the best bread, meat, cheeses, produce, pastries, pastas, cold cuts, etc. Honestly, we weren’t always thrilled to go on these errands! Afterall,
it was Sunday and we could be playing stickball or riding bikes instead of hiking all over Dyker Heights to buy groceries. What I came to understand years later as I began my journey in the culinary world is the importance of fresh, quality ingredients. Grandma B understood that and it’s that thinking that is the inspiration behind Mercato Cucina (that’s Market Kitchen in Italian). I worked in many landmark kitchens for over 30 years in New York City and was lucky enough to be able to meet with and sample some of the finest
products from the best food purveyors around the world. I have selected some of my favorites to carry at Mercato Cucina. In addition to our Italian inspired breakfast and lunch menu, we will have a variety of fresh house made pastas and sauces, fresh mozzarella, salumeria offerings, custom coffee blends plus specials to take home and enjoy with your family and friends much like I did with my family growing up. Local Cub Scouts Presented With Catholic Religious Emblems
Local Scouts and leaders from the Matinecock District of the Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council participated in Scout Sunday on April 25, 2021 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in East Northport. Scouts from nine different Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops were in attendance and participated. Scout Sunday is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. Normally held during the first week of February, the Mass had been postponed due to COVID rates. Attendees followed social distancing protocols and wore masks during the Celebration of the Mass. The Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of American youths. Scouting has brought families and communities together for 111 years to prepare America’s youth to live, work, and play with character and integrity. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God” pledged each week in the Scout Oath. The Scout Sunday is usually run by Scout volunteers, however due to pandemic restrictions these volunteer roles were limited. Mark Baron, an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 41 in Northport served as the lector. Also recognized at this Scout Sunday were three scouts who had done their Eagle Scout service projects for St. Anthony of Padua Parish. Matt Burkart of Troop 52 in East Northport beautified the garden behind St. Anthony of Padua church. Ryan Gibbs of Troop 174 in Elwood constructed a prayer bridge dedicated to St. Michael, the patron saint of police officers and military personnel. Brendan Murray of Troop

Cub Scouts from Pack 5 and Pack 238 with the assistance of their parents and leaders recently completed the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Catholic Religious Emblem programs. There were five Cub Scouts who were presented with the Light of Christ and twelve Cub Scouts presented with Parvuli Dei emblems. Reverend Ed Sheridan, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua presented the emblems. The purpose of the Light of Christ emblem is to help the Cub Scout develop a personal relationship with Jesus. With the parents’ active assistance and participation in this program, it is hoped that the Cub will come to see Jesus as a real person and his friend. The recipients of this medal were from Pack 238 of East Northport: Jake Drielyan, Lucas Friere, Andrew Hayden, Blake Picone, and Joseph Ross.
The purpose of the Parvuli Dei emblem is to help young Scouts explore a wide range of activities to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of their families and parishes, and to develop a good, positive self-image through the contributions they can make to the group or community. This year’s recipients of Parvuli Dei from Pack 238 were James Cassar, Brian Drew, Braeden FitzSimmons, Aidan Giangiulio, Thomas Hayden, Luke Howard, Colin Lopez, Cole McCreesh, Justin Neknez, and Thomas Scalici. Pack 5’s Luna Butler and Tyler Senneca also earned and received their Parvuli Dei emblems. Boy Scouts who had earned their Pope Pius XII Emblem were also recognized at the Scout Sunday service. They had received their emblems previously at the 63rd Annual Boy Scout Convocation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst on September 20, 2020. Stephen Garvey and Brendan Murray from Troop 410 in Northport were the Pope Pius XII recipients.

Local Non-Profit Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict
adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the
right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Effective For Reducing Veterans’ Stress
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) – Suffolk County’s largest not-for-profit provider of programs, services, and advocacy for people facing mental health challenges – is offering an Emotional Support Helpline staffed by trained crisis counselors who help callers talk through their emotions and find resources to help them cope with challenges associated with COVID-19. MHAW is serving as a Suffolk County partner agency in the helpline initiative hosted by NY Project Hope, a program of the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Emotional Support Helpline is 631-4717242 ext. 1800. Trained crisis counselors are available Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. All helpline conversations
are free, confidential, and anonymous. “The Emotional Support Helpline will connect you with someone who has been trained to hear what you are saying and give you the kind of support that works best for you during the pandemic,” said Tara Fredericks, MHAW’s Director of Special Projects who is also overseeing Project Hope for MHAW. “They can offer coping strategies, supportive resources, or simply a chance to talk.” “As the leading mental health agency in Suffolk County, we’re proud that MHAW is well-positioned to play a leadership role in this timely initiative,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “People don’t need to grapple with these stresses on their own. NY Project Hope is offering great value during this difficult period.”
In addition to the Emotional Support Helpline, NY Project Hope helps New Yorkers understand their reactions and emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic through digital educational materials, a supportive social media presence, and a website with resources and relevant materials at www.nyprojecthope.org. intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health
at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.

COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline
Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http:// doi.org/10.1002/jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a non-traumafocused, easy-to-learn technique that was found in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are trauma-focused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This

Girls Field Hockey And Boys Cross Country Teams Awarded With Proclamations Councilman Mark Cuthbertson visited Northport High School to congratulate both the girls field hockey team and boys cross country team following their championship wins. Girls field hockey was awarded the Long Island championship following their win over undefeated Garden City, while the boys
cross country team won the county championship. Mr. Cuthbertson awarded each member of the team with proclamations for their hard work and dedication to their respective sport. Diploma Display Ideas Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives. Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work. Framing One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material
and the matting can be chosen. Some grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors. Create a shadow box Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box. Create a photo wall Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every
time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if multiple family members attended the same school. Make a work of art Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another. Place it under glass Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Cost is $45 per day for members or $65 for non-members. The clinics will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for children in grades 1 – 7. A “Leader in Training” program is available for grades 8

Matinecock District Hosts Cub Scout Fun Day At Manor Farm
On May 8th, the Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council (Scouts BSA) held a Cub Scout Fun Day at Manor Farm located in Huntington NY. Following Covid restrictions, participants filled out forms and wore masks while they enjoyed the day’s events. There were 51 people in attendance and plenty of recruiting materials such as flexible Frisbees and sunglasses to hand out to families. The Matinecock District covers scouting for youths age 5 to
17 (Kindergarten through High School, no previous Cub Scouting experience needed to join Boy Scouts) in the Town of Huntington and the western section of the Smithtown Township. There were four new families in the surrounding area who came to learn more about scouting as well as to enjoy the games and sunshine. At the event, two Cub Scout Packs from Huntington set up tables for recruiting the youths in the scouting program -Pack 406 Melville and Pack 66 South Huntington.
Keeping it simple and fun, games like tug of war, an egg race, and a sack race were part of the Cub Scout Fun Day and Recruitment event. On hand to help with the fun were Boy Scout Troops Troop 8 (East Northport), Troop 218 (Melville), and Troop68 (Huntington) who were in charge of the games.
