Firefighter Fisher was the head chauffeur trainer and instructed many firefighters to become safe fire engine operators. He was also the secretary of Engine Company 3. Fisher will soon be moving to North Carolina and will become a Life Member of the Melville Fire Department.

Recipes Represent As part of an oral history project, students in Amy Lustig’s fifthgrade class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District interviewed a member of their family about a recipe that represents their family’s heritage. After interviewing the adult, students transformed their conversation into a story and added the steps and ingredients needed for the recipe. The pages were bound together to create a cookbook and each student received a copy. As a culmination of the project, the fifthgraders and their family members participated in a multicultural feast where students prepared the recipe to share with their classmates and invited guests.

So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to ﬂy solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Committed to Play On May 23rd, 12 student-athletes from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Google Expedition Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program, which allowed them to go on a virtual field trip by using Goggle Cardboard headsets. For an allotted half hour, each class had the opportunity to experience the technology program. Expeditions are collections,

scenes or virtual reality panoramas – 360-degree photo spheres, images and videos. They are accessed through the Expeditions App and viewed using the Google Cardboard Virtual Reality Viewers. Using a tablet, teachers choose an expedition and lead their class through virtual field trips, selecting the content they are viewing and pointing out specific points of interest along the

During the program, students ventured to various places such as the pyramids of Egypt, the depths of the ocean and outer space on the moon. “This kind of program is amazing for our students and the reaction we had was unbelievable,” said Krista Albrecht, instructional technology specialist. “They were incredibly engaged.”

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone joined Huntington School District officials and distinguished alumni Saturday, May 21st, in dedicating a plaque commemorating the Roosevelt Elementary School at the site on Lowndes Avenue where the school stood from 1913 until it was demolished in 1968. Station; former Suffolk County Public Administrator Anthony Mastrioanni; community leader Paul Johnson; and Thomas DiGiacomo, who attended kindergarten in the school and who is the current school board president. Originally known as Lowndes Avenue School, the school was built in 1913 at a cost of $58,000. It was a two-story, eight classroom, stucco covered structure on three acres of land. A 1926/27 addition,

which cost $99,409, doubled the size of Lowndes Avenue School to 16 classrooms. It was then renamed Roosevelt Elementary School in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. The school’s dedication ceremony was attended by Edith Roosevelt, the late president’s wife and son, Archibald, who would also attend the school’s closing ceremonies in January 1967.

Scouting for Food A Scout is helpful, and in the days of shortages in the local food pantries, our area Scouts were out in force to try and change the situation. The Scouts of the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America) took part in the annual Scouting for Food on March 19th. Armed with paper bags from the King Kullen Supermarkets, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts representing 23 Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and the members of the Nissequogue Chapter of Shinnecock Lodge, Order of the Arrow, participated in this effort to help stock the local food pantries. Scout Units also collected food that they delivered directly to their local food pantries. This campaign was part of the national phenomena known as “Scouting For Food” which began in the 1980s when Scouts answered the call to help members of their communities that were experiencing hard times. The need has not changed and the Scouts have not wavered in their dedication to this important cause. Collected were nonperishable items such as cereal, pasta, rice, canned soups, vegetables, stew and common household goods like soap and paper products. Canned and boxed goods were dropped off at the John Glenn High School in Elwood, the Matinecock District’s packing/distribution center for the day, where Scouts, OA members, adult volunteer Scouters, local community members and the Matinecock District Committee members manned the drop-off station at the John Glenn H.S. This mix of Scouting volunteers and members of the Hauppauge to Huntington-area community participated in the loading, unloading, sorting, and boxing the donated food that was

collected by the other Cubs and Scouts. All this food was distributed to more than two dozen local food pantries in the community and across Long Island, including: (in the Huntington area): Northport’s Ecumenical Lay Food Council, St. Hugh of Lincoln, St. Anthony of Padua RC Church’s Food Pantry, Gloria Dei RC Church and the Bethel Brethren Lutheran Church, and Helping Hands Mission; (in the Smithtown Township area) St. Thomas Moore RC Church (Hauppauge), Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, and Commack United

Methodist Church. Additionally, food items were also donated to Island Harvest and the Harry Chapin Food Bank. In these recessionary times, many families and people contributed food to the Scouts and in excess of 20,421 pounds of foodstuffs were distributed. The food (at 10 to 12 pounds per bag) was distributed to each of the participating district’s area food pantries to help restock

their shelves. Especially recognized for their collections and donations are Cub Scout Pack 406 (Huntington Station) with 1,200 pounds, and Boy Scout Troop 410 (Northport) with 4,429 pounds. Matthew Schieferstein, Matinecock Scout District’s Food Collection and Distribution Co-Coordinator for the Matinecock District, said, “On behalf of the Matinecock District. (B.S.A.) many thanks to the Commack, Smithtown, Northport, Hauppauge, East Northport, Kings Park, and Huntington area residents who contributed to the food collection by the Boy Scouts of America during our 29th annual “Scouting for Food.” Although these local food pantries have been given many days supply to assist the families in this area who are in need, they are still in need. Anyone who wishes to contribute is more than welcome to stop by and help resupply these food pantries with any canned or boxed items at any time during the year. A special thanks to the Elwood School District for the use of the John Glenn High School as our collection and distribution location.” Other Scouting volunteers added to Mr. Schieferstein’s remarks commenting, “Many thanks go to our neighbors in the community who assisted the Cubs and Scouts by generously donating food to the Scouting for Food 2016 program. This is Scouting’s Good Turn for the community, but the Scouts of the Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops and their volunteer leaders would like to say “THANK YOU!” to the community for the COMMUNITY GOOD TURN of all the donations of food and support on March 22nd.”

Some students watched YouTube videos to help them replicate the emotion and gestures of the person they were trying to emulate. During the three-hour long event, each student presented his or her memorized speech for

an audience of parents, classmates, faculty and administrators. The program’s master of ceremonies, Jimmy Rourke, introduced the student as he or she made their way to the podium. Following their speech, the students explained the prop, poster board or article of clothing they wore that represented the person who originally gave the speech.
