Proclamation Presented all other cancers combined over the past 30 years. Each day nearly 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer and an estimated one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. “The Town of Huntington is proud to join with Impact Melanoma in proclaiming the month of May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank Dr. Kathleen Finzel for representing Impact Melanoma and receiving this proclamation. Please remember to protect yourself and wear
sunscreen, not just this month but all year long.” Councilwoman Berland sponsored “Melanoma Prevention: Avoiding the Dangers of Tanning” with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman at Town Hall which is on the Town’s website and TV channel. Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Knocking Down Hunger In an effort to promote service learning, Oldfield Middle School students recently collected 1,700 food items to donate to the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach (HACO) Food Pantry. The two classes that collected the most items hd the opportunity to witness a Pay-It-Forward domino run in the school’s library. Each domino represented an item that was donated throughout the month of April. Due to the hard work of the school’s library staff, a elaborate
marble rollercoaster was set up throughout the library. At the launch, the marble was released and the students watched as it traveled through different obstacles, knocking down the dominos and making its way to the finish line. Principal Joanne Giordano and Assistant Principal Joseph Castoro also attended the event where the three students who collected the most food cut the ribbon before the launch took place. Sixth-graders Ashton Sylvia, Nahrahel Louis and
Ashley Vander Noot did the honors. Librarian Judy Boshnack thanked all the students for their outstanding work and for making the large donation a reality. “If it wasn’t for your big hearts then this would not be possible,” she said. “You are making a real difference in the lives of those in your community.” At the conclusion of the launch, the students used the library’s Makerspace and try out the new items that were recently added.

Two students from Washington Drive Primary School were recently named State Grade-Level Winners in the 2017 Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest. First-grader Audrey Donnelly and secondgrader Cathalina Aguilar
were first crowned winners at the school-grade level for their excellent handwriting. They then submitted their entries for the contest which is open to students in kindergarten through eighth-grade. The students were judged according to the Zaner-
Bloser Keys to Legibility which focuses on size, shape, spacing and slant. Both students received an engraved Zaner-Bloser State Winner Medallion and were recognized at the district’s Board of Education meeting on May 9th.

Five Northport High School seniors recently signed their National Letter of Intent to play their sport of choice at the collegiate level. Surrounded by their coaches, the studentathletes will graduate in June and move on to play at the next level in the fall. Track and Cross-Country athletes Eddie O’Brien and Evan Atherton signed their National Letter of Intent with their coach Jason Strom by their side.
O’Brien will be attending SUNY Geneseo in the fall for track, while Atherton will be attending the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for cross-country. Senior Maggie Fox signed on to play field hockey at SUNY New Paltz, Brenna Farrington committed to play lacrosse at the United States Coast Guard Academy and Ryan Magnuson signed on to play lacrosse at the United States Naval Preparatory
Academy. “The Athletic Department wishes each of these students continued success at the college level,” said Director of Physical Education, Athletics and Health Paul Klimuszko. “Thanks to all these student-athletes for their commitment and dedication to the Northport High School athletic program.”

Karen Galluzzo, a member of the Senior Center who volunteers at the Thrift/Gift Shop who is also an officer of the Huntington Park Village Club. She has volunteered with many community groups since she was a teenager. Mary Jane Higgins, who has volunteered at the Senior Center for the past four years. She has also volunteered to serve meals to seniors at the St. Hugh’s Satellite and in handing out food to the needy at St. Hugh’s School’s Project Hope program. Fran Lundstrom, a past president of the Hills Club, who is an avid supporter of the Little Shelter Animal Adoption and Rescue Center and all Veterans organizations. Marie Murray, an officer and trip coordinator for the Melville Club, who
has volunteered as a Eucharistic minister at Huntington Hospital and Carillon Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, and at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs R.C. Church in Centerport. Frank Scozzari, an officer of the Wolf Hill Club, who also is active in the senior group at St. Elizabeth R.C. Church in Melville. Phyllis Sheridan, a longtime member of the Larkfield Club, who has volunteered at Huntington Hospital for the past 20 years. She represents the Union United Methodist Church on the Ecumenical Lay Council and delivers food to the Northport/East Northport Food Pantry. Rosario Leonardo Torrisi, a past officer of the Nathan Hale Club who also volunteers at the Northport Veterans Administration Hospital and is a founding member of the Father Judge Council of the Knights of Columbus at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church.

The Town of Huntington recently recognized eight outstanding seniors for their volunteerism contributions to others in the Town. Chosen in a vote by their peers, the eight were selected with input from the Town’s senior clubs leaders and the Town’s Senior Division staff. Each of the honorees was chosen for volunteer efforts in the community or with the Town’s senior center or senior clubs. The honorees received proclamations at the annual Senior Recognition Day luncheon May 18 at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury. Taking part in the presentations were Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland and Tracey Edwards and Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia. This year’s honorees are: Nazaree Center, a longtime officer of the Huntington Park Village Club who has been involved in various programs at the Senior Center. She has also

Visit from Regent Tilles Administrators, board members, faculty members and students from the Elwood Union Free School District received a special visit from Roger B. Tilles on May 15th. Mr. Tilles, a regent for the New York State Education Department, stopped by classrooms at Elwood Middle School and James H. Boyd Intermediate School to learn about the educational opportunities taking place. The students used Desmos to answer a series of questions designed to help them gain a deeper understanding of how to determine if two lines will intersect and how to find the intersection point. Teacher Erica Giordano showed Regent Tilles how she can view student responses to plan instruction. At James H. Boyd Intermediate School, Principal Denise Toscano spoke with Regent Tilles about what exciting things are happening at the school. They visited a third-
grade classroom, where students demonstrated what they are learning in math to program Dash and Dot robots. Teachers Krista Albrecht and Liz Held planned a series of challenges for students to complete that involved measuring dimensions of different quadrilaterals and then programming Dash to travel the perimeter of the figure in two ways. The students recorded their work using SeeSaw to document their learning and share with parents. In addition, Regent Tilles visited another third grade class and read the class different types of poetry that the students enjoyed.
