Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced that more than 350 campsites are available at four Suffolk County campgrounds – all within close proximity to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club – during the week of the 118th United States Open Golf Championship. As the week of the U.S. Open approaches, campground availability is likely to change as reservations are made and campsites become filled. In addition, a new Suffolk County website that features an upgraded online reservation system, campsite descriptions and locations, and information on county golf courses and camper rentals was also announced. A new Promo Code, USOPEN18, will provide visitors with access to the Suffolk County online reservation system without having to pay for a non-residential Green Key Card. Suffolk County has lifted the four night minimum restriction for reservations at Sear Bellows Campground in Hampton Bays during the week of the Golf Championship when reserved using the specialized Promo Code. “There will be nearly 200,000 people converging upon Suffolk County next month to watch the best golfers in the world, and Suffolk County is prepared to provide a diverse and convenient list of accommodations for visitors staying the weekend,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “With over 8,000 hotel room nights expected to be booked for this event alone, we have made the necessary upgrades at our county campgrounds and parks to offer a convenient, accessible and affordable visit for golf fans.” The Suffolk County

Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Competition Winners Recently, students from Northport Middle School secured multiple high placements during the MagLev Competition at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. This competition, which was created by Brookhaven National Laboratories, required students to compete with their own constructed magnetic

levitation vehicles. Different categories of competition included self-propelled, electric, futuristic and more. Each vehicle was judged on soundness of construction and performance. Additionally, placement was also determined by their final comprehensive design

The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer. The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600 volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York

Metro area. More than 230 guests attended the official campaign launch for 2018 on Thursday, May 17th at the Glen Oaks Club, 175 Post Avenue, Old Westbury. The Northport-East Northport Union Free School District will host a “call to action” community forum on Wednesday, May 30th at 8 p.m. to discuss the impact of the Long Island Power Authority’s demand to lower their assessed valuation by 90 percent. During the first half of May, fifth-grade students headed to Northport Middle School in the fall attended their sixth-grade orientation. Students were guided by sixth-graders through “a day in the life” of a Northport middleschooler by means of a school-wide scavenger hunt. Each group of students was given a clue to decipher

that would bring them to a different location in the building. Upon arrival, group leaders would explain where they were, what they would do there, and answer any questions the fifth-graders had - and then they would obtain the next clue to move onto their next location. At each station, staff and faculty members gave students a clue and then ascertained

whether or not they solved it correctly. “We’ve found that running orientation as an immersion experience is much more beneficial to the students,” said Assistant Principal Dr. Chelsea Brown, “and it makes the future first day of school seem a little less daunting.”

In July 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools, and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming, and caring environment. Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task Force, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County. One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate

a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where Suffolk County school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students, and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations. Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance their own processes. “We believe that the best product is created through collaboration, and we are grateful to the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task

Force for sponsoring a forum where the best thinkers from Suffolk County came together,” said Suffolk County School Superintendents Association President Lars Clemensen. “From this collaboration was born a resource guide of best practices in the county for making sure students are free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.” While there is much good work going on in schools across Suffolk County in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in Suffolk County public

schools for the past five years, was created. This comprehensive resource guide, which is being shared with all Suffolk County school districts, will serve as an informative and valuable tool to support and enhance the work being done to implement DASA and protect the rights of all children attending public schools. “The Dignity for All Students Act defines the necessary components to ensure that students are treated with dignity within the school walls and at school events,” said ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. “It is our hope that this resource guide and the ongoing work that we do with students and staff

ensure that this happens in all aspects of their lives, both within and beyond the school doors.” “This resource guide is a collaboration between the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association,” said Suffolk County Human Rights Commission Chairman Rabbi Steven Moss. “As acts of bullying occur every day in schools, it is vital that schools provide a safe haven for those who have been bullied, a procedure to report these incidents, and then a method to deal with them by those in authority. This useful resource guide will assist those school

On Wednesday, May 9th, the Board of Commissioners of the St. James Fire District voted to move forward with a public referendum to sell the Route 25A Firehouse to the St. James Fire Department. The community vote will take place on Tuesday, June 19th, from 3-9 p.m., at the Jefferson Avenue Firehouse, located at 221 Jefferson Ave. Nearly five years ago, the St. James Fire District purchased the Route 25A firehouse from the St. James Fire Department in an effort to reduce expenditures (previously, the fire district had been paying rent to the fire department). “Given the current state of the building and the fire district’s needs, maintaining ownership of this property is no longer a fiscally prudent option,” said Edward Springer, commissioner. “Selling it back to the department

would carry a number of benefits: the department, as they are under different laws and regulations than the fire district, would be able to expedite repairs and improvements to the facility, through use of its budget as well as private donations/grants – something that the district is prohibited from doing.” As the district’s contract from the original sale stipulates, and has been upheld by the New York State Supreme Court and Attorney General, the department has the right of first refusal should the district choose to sell the building. As such, and in line with this, the district has had ongoing discussions with the members of that department and its members have voted to approve to engage in the sale process. To complete the sale, it must now be put to a community vote, to be

held on June 19. It is important to note that if voters approve the sale of the firehouse to the fire department, there is no tax impact to the community. The St. James Fire District will host a community forum for residents within the district on Wednesday, May 30th, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined. Notice of the finalized location will be posted to the Fire District’s website, www.stjamesfd.org, by Thursday, May 24th. Fire district commissioners and members of the fire department will present information about the sale, address the department’s future plans for the building and answer any questions regarding the referendum. Additional information regarding the sale will be sent home to all district residents in the coming weeks.

Experiencing the Civil War Seventh and eighthgrade students at Northport Middle School traveled back in time to the Civil War days via a Civil War encampment of reenactors from Boots & Saddles Productions. Fifteen reenactors, with a deep knowledge and passion for the Civil War,

honored with the Silver Beaver Award. Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is a national recognition presented for distinguished service to people within a local Boy Scouts of America Council. The recipient must be a registered adult member of the BSA. The selection of the candidates is based on volunteer efforts to scouting, involvement in community activities, and volunteer service to youth outside of scouting. The selection committee was made up of all previous

Silver Beaver recipients across all districts within the Suffolk County Council. In order to be was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award, the Scouting volunteer is nominated by his peers and his record of service to the community has to include service to Scouting and Exploring, service to youth other than the scouting program, and any service and affiliation to the community in civic, religious, fraternal, political, business, and professional organizations.

Enrichment and Exploration Students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District have been exploring different enrichment programs through the school’s launch of the 2nd GEAR program. At the beginning of April, students selected four of their top-choices from a long list of activities to participate in every Tuesday afternoon through the end of May, and were assigned to one for the duration of the program.

Enrichment activities included “So You Think You Can Dance,” American Sign Language, Movie Magic, Fitness Fanatics and many more. “The main idea of this program is to focus on providing a time where students can express themselves and their interests,” said Harley Principal Elissa Milan. “We’re constantly exploring new ways to continue educating the whole child.”

The end of the six-week program will culminate with a 2nd GEAR Fair, where students will be able to demonstrate what they’ve learned. Students are enjoying learning more in depth about areas that interest them. “I like 2nd GEAR,” said second-grader Angelina. “We have fun and learn a lot of cool things, like how muscles can grow when you exercise them, and they make you stronger!”

CPR Awareness Week Cardiology at Northwell Health and Vice President of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors “What if it were your mom or dad, your husband or wife, your sister or brother, your friend or someone standing next to you who was having a cardiac arrest? You would want to know what to do. So, if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, you won’t be afraid, your actions can help.” Only about 46 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives. Many Americans don’t perform CPR because they don’t know what to do or they are afraid of hurting the person. To help increase the likelihood of people performing CPR in an emergency, the Association recommends Hands-Only CPR, which has two easy steps. Step 1: Call 911. Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. The American Heart Association is marking this week here on Long Island by encouraging people to get trained in CPR to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans perform CPR and know how to use an AED. In 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked

collaboratively to federally designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week, which happens the first seven days of June each year. In 2009, the American Heart Association launched a nationwide Hands-Only CPR campaign to raise awareness about this lifesaving skill. The campaign is supported nationally by an educational grant from the Anthem Foundation. Since 2012, nearly 10.1 million people have been trained in Hands-Only CPR via events, training kiosks and video education with the Anthem Foundation’s support. Starting in 2017, the American Heart Association partnered with leading organizations in the field of cardiac arrest to form the National Cardiac Arrest Collaborative, with the goal of promoting how to help in a cardiac arrest emergency. National CPR and AED Awareness Week – June 1st through 7th, 2018 – aims to raise awareness and increase the number of people who perform CPR in cardiac arrest emergencies. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. That’s why this year, the American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is highlighting the importance of bystander CPR. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater survival rates after a cardiac arrest. “Every second counts in cardiac arrest. Bystanders are absolutely critical in a cardiac arrest emergency. They start the American Heart Association’s out-ofhospital chain of survival by calling 9-1-1 and then providing early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions, and finding the closest AED” said [Dr. Russell Schiff, Director of Ambulatory Pediatric

STEMing from Life A discovery-based, hands-on learning “Maker Faire” was held at Elwood Middle School on May 18th. Students grades kindergarten through eighth were invited to engage in creative and fun workshops to learn basic physics and engineering principles. Each session was grade specific, appropriate for ages kindergarten through second, third through fifth, and sixth

through eighth. Activities included creating gliding robots, building a marble rollercoaster, coding Dash robots and more. Students, accompanied by family members, traveled from station to station, utilizing their STEM centered skills in many different ways. Challenges ranged from simple to complicated, but students resiliently tackled each one until they reached the end goal. “We’re proud of not only

committee, Yoganomics in Medford provided students with a physical outlet to practice mindfulness. The instructors taught students in all grades to focus on their breathing, connect with their body and master challenging poses that some thought
