The Elwood Union Free School District is proud to announce that Elwood Middle School was recently designated a “No Place for Hate” school by The AntiDefamation League. The middle school will join 1,600 schools across the country who have partnered with the league to develop and institute programs designed to celebrate equity, acceptance and diversity. This self-directed program helps community members to take the lead on maintaining a positive school climate so all students can thrive. “There has never been any place for hate at Elwood Middle School or any Elwood school,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “This designation from the ADL should serve to remind all residents of the importance of having difficult conversations, celebrating diversity and acceptance of all students.”

In September, the middle school created an ADL Committee comprised of students, teachers and parents, who identified the goals of the No Place for Hate campaign through a student survey. They focused on teaching our community members to identify hate, and to empower them with the skills to address it in a safe and educated manner. The school kicked off the campaign with an assembly in November, when motivational speakers from the nonprofit organization, “Sweethearts and Heroes,” spoke with students about the impact bullying has on schools, neighborhoods and individuals. Students learned the importance of bystander empowerment, empathy and leadership. Students learned the “the “No Place for Hate” pledge in their social studies classes and continued the work each month during the school’s Knights of the Round Table, or KORT,

meetings, which focused on prejudice, discrimination, scapegoating and stereotyping. Students also learned and practiced ADL’s “Six Ways to be an Ally.” “We are so proud of our school community for taking on this important initiative,” Principal Dr. Christina Sapienza said. “We know the work has just begun. This is a yearly designation that needs to be renewed each year with a commitment to listening to the voices of our students, and teaching them the skills they will need both in school and beyond to contribute to making their world a positive and peaceful place.” Traditionally, the ADL holds a “Banner Ceremony” for all the designated schools in the New York State area in Manhattan. This year, the district is looking forward to a virtual celebration sometime in the future.

Northport High School history teacher Bryan Krahel understood when he made the decision to join the United States Air Force Reserves in 2014 that there would be risks and potential danger, particularly during a time of war. But when he was activated for the first time in early April, he had no idea that his call to service would be to engage in the fight against COVID-19. “Our troops are trained and well prepared to combat enemies of all kinds, but this battle is one in which even the most seasoned and battle-hardened veterans would find great difficulty in responding to,” Mr. Krahel’s colleague Darryl St. George wrote. “Despite these challenges, it is inspiring and profoundly encouraging to see our men and women in uniform adapt and overcome as they join in the heroic struggle against this pandemic.” Mr. Krahel is attached to the 106th Air Rescue Wing in Westhampton Beach. traffic control and manning the checkpoints for the COVID-19 testing sites. However, his duties have changed and have become more involved. Mr. Krahel is now working with Naval Corpsmen, Air Force and Army Medics through most of the test collection process. “This was not part of any of Krahel’s training and yet he, like so many others, was able to adapt to the challenges of these times and has done so with tremendous professionalism and great courage,” Mr. St. George wrote. “When one takes the oath of service, it is understood that there will be sacrifices and it is important for us to remember this. Certainly, we are living in a time, when we are all expected to make sacrifices, but there are those among us whose sacrifices are greater still.” Mr. Krahel was scheduled to be married on April 18, and like so many, he was forced to postpone his wedding. “There are many who have had to make this painful decision during this period, but for Krahel this heart ache has been compounded by

his military activation and inevitable absence from his fiancée and family. Yet he does not allow himself to indulge in self-pity, nor does he look for sympathy, for he understands, like so many in our country today, that there is a job that needs to be done and he has made a commitment to ensure that it is done well,” his colleague wrote. Mr. Krahel’s orders have been extended to May 31 and may possibly be pushed into the summer, during which he could be relocated to the SUNY Old Westbury site. “It is difficult to say what will happen. He tries to take it one day at a time, but there is a lot of uncertainty. We can all agree it is nearly impossible to know what exactly the future holds, but one thing that is certain: we will get through this and it is in large part due to people like Bryan Krahel,” Mr. St. George wrote. “So, we can allow ourselves to feel frustrated, sad and angry during this painful and trying time, but let us remember there are those among us who are fighting the good fight, so that we can soon have our lives back again.”

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. The scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

Sometimes called respirators or facemasks, respiratory protective devices are approved by various agencies that aim to protect and safeguard the public. Many masks are endorsed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which

oversees the prevention of work-related illness and injury. The Food & Drug Administration also clears certain masks for their use in health care settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also approve and recommend certain respirators. Each mask is categorized by a generalized rating. Understanding these ratings helps people identify how

the respirator performs (how much it filters) and the situations each mask is designed for. Ratings also indicate which substances the mask is designed to resist. The following are various types of disposable particulate respirators. Oil resistance Particulate respirators, which the CDC notes protect only against particles - not gases or vapors are rated as N, R or P for

protection against oils. In some industries, industrial oils can degrade the filter performance. N is not resistant to oil, R is somewhat resistant to oil, and P is strongly resistant or oil-proof. Masks with the â€œNâ€? rating are widely used in health care settings. Filtration rating Filtration ratings refer to the ability to filter various particle sizes. Those that

filter out at least 95 percent of airborne particles, according to the NIOSH, will get a 95 rating. Those that filter out at least 99 percent get a 99 rating. Respirators with a 100 rating filter at least 99.97 percent of particles. N-95 masks are not resistant to oil, but they do filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles. Length of use If a respirator has not been soiled or damaged, it can be reused in certain industries

outside of the medical profession, states the CDC. However, a respirator that has been worn in the presence of infectious materials, such as those in hospital settings, should be disposed of properly after one use.
