On June 4th, Mercy Haven, Inc. will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Three Oldfield Middle School students in the Harborfields Central School District received exceptional rankings at the Town of Huntington’s 15th Annual Huntington In Bloom Art Contest held at the Heckscher Art Museum. In the highly competitive competition, sixth-grade student Lili Noah and eighth-grade student Nina Bennardo won “Best in
Grade” and Courtney Levy claimed the seventh-grade second place title. Under the advisement of art teachers Melissa Goscinski and Drew Lockwood, these Harborfields students were among just three award recipients from each grade level in all of Huntington to be recognized. The “Best In Grade” award provides Oldfield Middle School with two $50 grants
toward art supplies. Prints of the winning artwork are displayed in the front lobby of the middle school. “As well as connecting them to their community, this experience helps students gain important confidence in their ability,” said Lockwood. Congratulations to these students for their artistic accomplishments!

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it
took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Among others, these included: • Create and maintain a healthy school culture • Broaden and enrich school curriculum • Provide more and better learning time during the school year and summer • End disparities in learning opportunities created by tracking and ability grouping In its application, the high school emphasized open enrollment for AP and honors courses. In addition, the application highlighted the instructional lab classes that are offered in order for students to build their content knowledge and skills so that they may have an opportunity in the future to take an AP or honors course prior to graduating. The high school also emphasized its efforts to support the social-emotional supports that are provided for students and addressed the technology opportunities available to students and

Hands On Math As a supplement to the rigorous math curriculum offered at the middle school level, students at Elwood Middle School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in an interactive math museum called The Math Midway, a traveling math exhibit from the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City. From May 13th through 15th, students in their mathematics classes visited the museum and rotated
to six different handson mathematic learning stations. Testing their math knowledge, students were challenged to complete tasks while developing an understanding of various math concepts. Some of the stations included “Ring of Fire,” where students observed the cross-section of a translucent solid, the “Roller Graphicoaster” station, where students tested and adjusted the slope of a track to make the
coaster even faster, “Funny Faces,” which explained the complex mathematics incorporated in computer program for special effects photographs, and “Organ Function Grinder,” which allowed students to create their own math functions. The Math Midway is the first exhibition of the Museum of Mathematics. The mission of the museum is to enhance public understanding and perception of mathematics.
Magnet Education

In conjunction to their magnet and electricity unit, fourth-grade students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in the “Magnets To Go” program, an interactive lesson on magnetic forces provided by the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Led by Brookhaven National Laboratory Department of Energy scientist Jessica McKenna, students worked
collaboratively in groups of two to complete magnet experiments. Students first learned about the different magnetic and non-magnet metals. Each group received a plate of small objects they hypothesized would be magnetic. Students tested each object and discovered true magnetic items. Student also explored the attracting and repelling sides of a magnet and observed the flow of electricity using a solenoid, a coil of wire
that acts like a magnet when an electric current is present. Tutoring Program
For the past fifteen years, James. H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District, in cooperation with BAE Systems of Greenlawn, has provided
students with additional experience working with real-world mathematics. Engineers from BAE Systems volunteer their lunchtime to tutor students and English language
learners in hands-on problem-solving concepts including counting coins, making purchases, making change and determining if their answers are accurate.

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual ranking of the country’s high schools, which assesses schools on how well they serve all students and how successfully the schools are educating students across a variety of measurable academic outcomes. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School ranked #112 out of more than 1,000 high schools reviewed in New York State. As a result, the school has received Silver Medal status from the magazine.
Rankings are based on the latest data available to the College Board from the 2012-2013 school year. Elwood-John H. Glenn High School ranked above the NYS average in terms of college readiness and proficiency in Math and English. The school has a 43 percent participation rate in AP examinations with 87 percent of students scoring a 3 or higher on their exams. A grade of 3 or higher on an AP exam indicates that the student is achieving at or above college level.

On Friday, May 8th, the Elwood Union Free School District hosted a special Community Day event for residents of all ages to celebrate Elwood pride and unity from 4-8 p.m. During the celebration, residents were entertained with various outdoor activities. Residents enjoyed musical performances from a variety of bands including the Coconutz faculty band and a band comprised of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students. Geared for all ages, attendees participated in activities including sand art, bounce house, face painting and tattoos. Community members cheered on the Knights lacrosse, baseball and softball teams during their athletic games, as well as Elwood Middle
School students as they competed in a robotics competition. Throughout the evening, attendees had the opportunity to observe artwork from students in kindergarten through the 12th grade, showcased in the high school cafeteria and lobby. A special halftime presentation was held on the main stage, featuring two prestigious recognitions. Suffolk County Legislator Steven Stern presented Elwood resident Rosemarie Kluepfel with the 2015 Suffolk County Women of Distinction Award. Additionally, Stern presented Elwood Board of Education President Joseph Fusaro with a proclamation from the Town of Huntington for Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s silver medal
School of Opportunity recognition by the National Education Policy Center. The event also featured a cook-off challenge with Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students Chris Bosco, Jacob Pagan and Mike Sgambati in the Wilson Tech Culinary Arts program battling Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo, Board of Education Vice President Dan Ciccone and district parent Cesar Vallejos. In the end, the team of Elwood students claimed the Iron Chef Champions title. “We hope this event brings light to what we are doing here in Elwood and the great programs that are being offered,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business Keri Loughlin.

Community Celebration Faculty and students at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills raised over $1,200 for United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc. (UCP of Suffolk). Donations were received through t-shirt sales, fundraisers and physical fitness and academic challenges that all took place at the school. Assistant Principal

Tech Fair At the high school level, some of the presentations demonstrated how students complete science labs by submitting their results, analysis and conclusions into Google Forum, and the use of Destiny Online Catalog to access subscription databases, use mobile apps and access the district’s e-book collection. Oldfield Middle School students demonstrated the use of Computer Aided Design to create a green home that renders the use of five alternative and renewable energy methods. The middle school robotics team also presented their robot design and programming to run the obstacle course and complete missions. At the primary and elementary levels, students showcased their knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and how to use Google Images. Additionally, a Thomas J. Lahey Elementary
fifth-grade student demonstrated her musical talents on the flute while using the award-winning SmartMusic software program that provides immediate feedback to view the correct and incorrect rhythms and pitches onscreen. As a developing program at middle and high school levels, students are learning to create newscast scripts for weather, sports and general news reports. Students experience how to shoot and edit video to create a production. “The overall idea is to highlight and put a spotlight on the amazing things that are taking place in the classroom in regards to technology,” Cox said. “This is an opportunity for our teachers working in collaboration with our students to highlight that technology innovation and celebrate it.”

To celebrate technology innovation district-wide, the Harborfields Central School District hosted its first annual Technology Fair, welcoming members of the community to witness the collaborative efforts and technology programs used by students and teachers. The event began with an introduction, demonstration of the 3D Printer and acknowledgement of all the presenters led by Executive Director of Instructional Services Jordan Cox. Following the presentation, community members and students visited 11 different classrooms as students and teachers demonstrated their knowledge and skills using various technologies. The fair featured technology equipment and programs students use on a daily basis to enhance their educational experience in academic and fine arts programs.
