Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.
Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions. This Chronic Health Care Coordination program solely serves people with incomes below the poverty line. Participants, who must be on Medicaid, also often receive various forms of food and housing assistance. Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difficult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.
EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. FCA, a leading health and human services nonprofit organization on Long Island, recently welcomed Keith Scott as its grants director. In this position, Scott will oversee the procurement of grant funding and assist with strategic initiatives including the expansion of programs throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Grants from the Federal, State and County governments provide the vast majority of funding for FCA programs. Obtaining these grants is crucial for the continuance of vital programs that serve Long Islanders of all ages. “Keith is well-known and well-regarded in the health and human services space,” said FCA President and CEO Dr. Jeffrey L Reynolds. “His energy, intelligence and experience will be critical to our success as we continue to expand our programs and our reach.” Scott is no stranger to Long Island’s not for profit community, having served in numerous positions at vital organizations that work to protect and empower vulnerable populations. He joins FCA after serving as Director of Education at The Safe Center in Bethpage, a not for profit agency that counsels, protects, assists and empowers victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. The Safe Center also advocates for and offers counseling for children with mental health issues. As Director of Education, Scott significantly expanded the visibility of the Safe Center through interviews with the press, social media
KEITH SCOTT outreach and community presentations. His commitment to helping people live healthier lives began as a teenager, when Scott witnessed the devastating effect of addiction and social injustice in his home town. “The loss of people I knew, the loss of opportunity for a full life, and the lack of knowledge and resources that led to tragedy resonated with me. Being involved in community coalition and community service is at the core of who I am today. My experiences have given me the perspective to understand the needs of the community on the micro and macro level and are reflected in what I seek to achieve in my strategic advancement and grant writing work.” In addition to his position at FCA, Scott continues to serve as Corporate Compliance Officer at Hispanic Counseling Center, a position he has held for more than two years. He is also a member of the adjunct faculty at Hofstra University and Long Island University, teaching aspiring health professionals about mental
health issues, particularly the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on mental health. A former substance abuse/addiction counselor, Scott was a member of the Nassau County Opioid Crisis Action Plan task force under former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. He established the first on demand Narcan program in New York State and wrote revenge porn legislation for Nassau County. Scott earned a Master of Arts - MA, Public Policy Analysis from Stony Brook University and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Magna Cum Laude, from Long Island University. A once in a lifetime event will take place on Saturday, June 4th, 2022, at East Northport Middle School. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America has been selected to participate by Amateur Radio International Space Station (ARISS) to speak to real live astronauts while orbiting in space. This event is FREE to attend. Suffolk County
Council (BSA) wants to bring our local community members together to be a part of something that is different and out of this world (literally). This is being offered to the public for free, in an effort to encourage the 5- to 17-year-old youths in our community to get involved with STEM programs and to let them know the wonderful things
that scouting programs can offer to our children in addition to giving them a well-rounded education and experiences. This will be a fun fill day starting from 9AM. Planned events include Rocket Races, Robotic activities, STEM projects, and dignitary presenters. For the youths already in the Boy Scouting program, the Cinematography Merit
Badge and the Radio Merit Badge classes are being offered, in addition to the chance to talk directly to astronauts orbiting above the Earth. Youths from all over Suffolk County, New York will get the chance to enter a contest to ask astronauts on board the International Space Station a question. Open to any youth (scout or non-scout) in Suffolk
County, the children can enter the contest. Program, according to Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) who is making applications available through his district office in Huntington Station. “This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses,” Legislator Donnelly said. According to Legislator Donnelly, the summer program is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 and will run for seven weeks through Friday, August 19, 2022. Qualifying program participants will be paid
$15 per hour and may work up to 25 hours each week. Besides the age qualifications, applicants must meet United States residency requirements and the gross annual income of the participant’s family must not exceed: • $27,180 for a family of one • $36,620 for a family of two • $46,060 for a family of three • $55,500 for a family of four • $64,940 for a family of five • $74,380 for a family of six • For family units of more than six, add $9,440 for each additional family member For additional information or to

Nearly half (9,500 or 48 percent) of the injuries were thermal burns, including both burns from fire and from contact with hot objects; 5,200 thermal burns per year were caused by such contact or other non-fire events. Children under five accounted for an average of 2,000, or 39 percent, of the contact-type burns per year. These burns typically occurred when someone, often a child, bumped into, touched, or fell on the grill, grill part, or hot coals. NFPA offers these tips and recommendations for enjoying a fire-safe grilling season: For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead. (Watch NFPA’s video on how to check for leaks.) Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area. If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.

Often considered the unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend typically includes lots of celebrations and cookouts, often with grilling as a focal point. As the holiday, and summer months, grow closer, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds everyone of basic safety tips to grill and celebrate safely. Fire departments responded to an average of 10,600 home fires annually involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues according to NFPA’s research from 20142018. This includes 4,900 structure fires and 5,700 outside or unclassified fires. These fires resulted in an annual average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries, and $149 million in direct property damage. The peak months for grilling fires are July (18 percent), June (15 percent), May (13 percent), and August (12 percent), though grill fires occur year-round. Leading causes of grill fires include failing to clean the grill, the heat source being located too close to combustible materials, leaving equipment unattended, and leaks or breaks in the grill or fuel source. “As grilling season approaches, it is important to review basic safety tips especially if the grill hasn’t been used over the winter,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “Establishing a firesafe location for using your grill is also crucial, to make sure it is a safe distance from your home and other items that can burn.” A yearly average of
