With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s

While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What
does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies
frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Scholar-Athletes Awarded The Elwood Union Free School District is pleased to congratulate ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School seniors Madison Graifman and Peter Vidulich II for earning the Scholar Athlete Award in recognition of their exceptional academic and athletics success presented by the Town of Huntington on May 10th. This award is
independent science research program. Along with graduating at the top of her class, she was named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program, earned the Gold Award on the National Spanish Examinations in grades 9-11 and named a finalist in the National Hispanic Recognition Program for her success on the PSAT/ NMSQT exam. She will continue her academic career at Harvard University where she plans to major in biology on the track to pre-medical studies. “I am going to miss the small community we have here,” said DiMartini. “We all get along and know each other so well.” Involved in his school community, Wollman has been a member of the high school tennis team, National Honor Society, Knowledge Masters, Knights for Nature, Science
Olympiad Club, chamber choir and president of Mathletes. Among his many accomplishments, he earned a perfect score on his ACT college admission and placement exam. Wollman is enrolled in four Advanced Placement courses and is part of the independent science research program. In the fall, he plans to attend Boston University on a Presidential Scholarship and will major in engineering. “I feel that the district really gives [students] the opportunity to take what [they] want out of high school,” said Wollman. “I wanted to challenge myself and not take only regents classes because I felt that I would learn more from an AP or honors course. Reward School Named The New York State Education Department has named Harborfields High School to its distinguished list of Reward Schools for the 2016-2017 school year. This status is bestowed upon schools that have made the most progress and/or those that have the highest achievement in the state without significant gaps in student achievement
between subgroups. In result of their academic performance for the 20142015 school year, only 220 schools throughout New York State were granted this honor. “I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication shown by all our administrators, teachers and students,” Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro
said. “Through the collaborative efforts of our students and staff and the ongoing support from our community, our schools continue to earn prestigious recognitions. During her time at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, DiMartini was an active member of Natural Helpers, Alpha-toOmega Club, the school’s newspaper, Languages Other Than English Honor Society and performed in the school’s musical for the past four years. She is currently the president of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she volunteers at Huntington Hospital, is a member of Girl Scouts, performs with a community theater group and teaches piano lessons. Dedicated to her studies, she is enrolled in five Advanced Placement courses and the school’s

Special Recognition The New York State Education Department has named Elwood-John H. Glenn High School to its list of Reward Schools for the 2016-2017 school year. The high school is one out of only 220 schools throughout the state to be honored with this noteworthy recognition. “The Elwood UFSD is honored to receive the Reward School distinction,” said Dr. Gary Furman, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. “We are proud of our students who continue to perform well on NYS Regents exams and accept the academic challenge provided by the
open enrollment program for Honors and AP courses. In 2014-2015, students accepted the challenge of open enrollment, as there was a substantial student enrollment increase into Honors and AP courses. The number of students taking AP courses in the 2015-2016 school year has also increased.” According to the NYSED, Reward Schools are either schools that have made the most progress or schools that have the highest achievement in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement that are not being closed. “The Reward School distinction would not
be possible without the dedication, instruction and support from our teachers to our students,” said Dr. Furman. “In receiving the Reward School distinction, we recognize the importance of the K-8 teachers and administrators that provided the foundation of knowledge and skills for students to be successful when they enter JGHS. Lastly, we thank the parents for supporting their children and the Elwood UFSD so that we can provide the academic and extracurricular programs that educate the whole child which contributes to the academic success of all students.”

HOPE Project Thirteen high school seniors who completed Stony Brook University Hospital’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program celebrated their “graduation” from the program and are on their way to college. A ceremony took place at the hospital on May 10th to honor their accomplishments. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students from the Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch school districts and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for hundreds of promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities. During the 2015-2016 academic year, faculty instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing clinical professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care.
At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the “amazing” breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete college. Completing the two years of HOPE inspired three students to stay and attend Stony Brook University in the fall to continue to strive towards achieving their goals. One of those students, Michelle Najera, of Longwood High School, has an interest in dentistry. She credits the program with connecting her with a member of the dental school faculty and assisting her in the admissions process for college. “I made some really good connections through the program as well,” she said. “I got to meet Dr. Carrion and he wrote me a letter of recommendation which I believe helped me a tremendous amount when applying to college.” Katterin De La Cruz
from Brentwood High School plans to become an emergency medicine physician or a surgeon. She says that she loves the “rush of the emergency room” and “the idea that every case that walks through the door has its own unique story amazes me and that one day I would be the one putting people back together is just very cool.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include: Allegheny College, Cornell University, Farmingdale State College, Monroe College, St. Joseph’s College, SUNY New Paltz, Suffolk County Community College, and West Virginia University.

Cell-ebrating Science Led by representatives from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center, fifth-grade students at James H. Boyd Intimidate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a hands-on activity that allowed them to construct
a model representation of a cell. During the lesson, students learned about the structure and functions of cells. Using a clear plastic bag to act as the cell membrane, the fifthgraders created a cell model, complete with
various shaped beans and pastas in the structure to represent organelles. The bag was filled with water, which served as the cytoplasm and the ingredients were held together inside the bag by a special gelatin.

Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District showcased their creativity at the school’s annual Invention Convention, coordinated by the district’s Shared Decision Making Committee. Open to all Boyd students, participants were encouraged to use their imagination, ingenuity and basic science and mathematical skills to identify a need or solve a problem. The student “inventors” were tasked with developing an invention idea – a practical
function to solve an everyday or global problem. They kept an inventor’s journal to collect ideas about their inventions and to sketch a diagram of their creations. In their journal, students addressed basic information about their inventions, including the user of the product, how it works and how the invention is built. During the Invention Convention showcase, students displayed prototypes of their clever creations that included the “Multitab,” “Shell-Pellant,” “Freshenator,” “Power Clean Plus” car washer,

hot and cold headbands, “Circle Shuttle” and “Robot Cleaner,” to name a few. In addition to the inventions, a representative from the company Mad Science Group provided students with a handson experiment activity where they observed the transformation of a liquid substance to a rubbery and stretchy state. Owl-rageous Experience In conjunction with their study unit on evolution, students in Richard Greening’s biology class at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a wildlife encounter with a red-tailed hawk and great
horned owl. For the visit, Greg Matonis, a hospital supervisor at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center brought the two birds of prey to the class. As a former employee of the wildlife rescue center in Hampton Bays, Greening
had ample experience handing the animals and explaining their unique features. During the class, the students compared homologous and analogous traits and how it related to the theory of natural selection.
Scholar-Athletes Honored The Harborfields Central School District is pleased to congratulate Harborfields High School seniors Alex Bloom and Abigail Wax for earning the Scholar Athlete Award in recognition of their exceptional academic and athletics success presented by the Town of Huntington on May 10th. This award is issued to the top male and female student-athletes who hold the highest academic average in their grade. Among her many accomplishments, Wax dedicated her four years in high school as a member of the varsity cross country, winter track and field and spring track and field
teams. She held the title of “scholar-athlete” all four years in her three sports and currently holds a 105 average. In addition, she won numerous academic awards including Outstanding Achievement in biology, world history, AP biology, French and science research. She was a Research Report Badge winner for the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search, received the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and was the winner of the Harborfields High School Outstanding Student in Science Research. Bloom, a three-year varsity basketball player, balanced hard work in the classroom and on
the court. Along with helping lead his team to win League and Suffolk County Championships, he was voted by the Basketball Coaches Association to receive AllCounty Academic honors, leading the team with a 106 average. He was also named to the All-League team, was a recipient of the Coaches Award and has held the title of “scholarathlete” for the past three years. He was named AP Scholar with Distinction and Principal’s Honor Roll. Additionally, he competed in the prestigious Moody’s Mega Math Challenge and Suffolk County Math Teacher Association Contest.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Coucilwoman Susan A. Berland led their Town Board colleagues at the May 10th Town Board meeting in issuing a proclamation declaring July 23rd as “Coltrane Day” in the Town. On July 23rd, the Friends of the Coltrane Home will present the second annual Coltrane Day Music Festival in Heckscher Park. The event will bring together jazz aficionados for a day of
performances, community jams and workshops, in conjunction with the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. The event will also raise funds the effort to restore the Dix Hills house where jazz legend John Coltrane lived the last years of his life and where his wife, Alice – a master and influential musician and composer in her own right – recorded multiple seminal recordings with world renowned musicians in the basement. The house has been designated
as a historic landmark by Huntington Town and is listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. The Town of Huntington purchased the three-acre property several years ago to create Coltrane Park and transferred ownership of the house to the notfor-profit group Friends of the Coltrane Home, which wants to restore the house for use as a museum and cultural and educational center.

Lawrence Leake, Shane McGuire and Infinite Tucker and coached by Ron Wilson, Eli Acosta and Haidee Ganz-Bonhurst received a proclamation from Supervisor Petrone congratulating them for their record breaking year, which was capped by their success at the New

Huntington Hospital is in the midst of constructing a new emergency department, set to open in January, which will double the size of the current ED. While doing construction on this facility, a time capsule from the 1960s was discovered. Danielle Bursky from Plainview is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Danielle is living with Crohn’s disease which combined with ulcerative colitis are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. Danielle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 9 years old. It took a few years for her to get on the right medication and get her disease under control. Like many she has had many ups and downs. Danielle’s parents have always tried to keep things “normal” in her life and have never let her use my medical condition as a crutch. “I have been involved with CCFA for 5 years and love participating in the annual Take Steps Walk,” says Danielle. “I accepted the honor of being the 2016 Shining Star because I want to be a role model for that other nine-year-old girl. I want to show kids that Crohn’s shouldn’t hold you back; it should push you to do better things and be a better person.” The Take Steps for

Volunteers Honored The Town of Huntington recently recognized ten outstanding seniors for their volunteerism contributions to others in the Town. Chosen in a vote by their peers, the ten were selected with input from the Town’s senior clubs leaders and the Town’s Senior Division staff. Each of the honorees was chosen for volunteer efforts in the community or with the Town’s senior center or senior clubs. “Each of these honorees has devoted time and effort to enhance the programs the Town provides for our senior population,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “This recognition is a small token of the Town’s appreciation for all they have done.” The honorees received proclamations at the annual Senior Recognition Day luncheon May 12th at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury. Joining Supervisor Petrone in the presentations were Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland and Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia. This year’s honorees are: • Margaret Henry Breland, a member of the Harborfields Club, who helps locate resources and donations for residents in need and provides them transportation when needed.
• George Georgianni, who remains an active member of the Nathan Hale Club, even at the age of 103. • Gordon Goldsmith, a member of the Nathan Hale Club, who has been active with the Jewish War Veterans, American Legion, Huntington Historical Society, Heckscher Museum and the Town Veterans
Advisory Board, among other groups. • Gordon Harper, a who has volunteered at the Senior Center for the past five years, as well as at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, among other places. • Charles Holt, who has been president of the Wolf Hill Club for the past two years. He also has been an active participant in the American Legion in the Classroom program, which allows students to learn of the life and sacrifices of military personnel.
• Elaine Howard, who has been an active member of the Huntington Park Village Club and its treasurer for the past 11 years. • Gladys Mayette, an active member of the Hills Club, serving as executive vice president and chair of its board of directors. She has also been active at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church. • Bridget McKeown, who has held many positions with the Laurel Club and who is currently its president. She has also been very active with the St. Philip Neri Parish in Northport and with the Huntington Hospital Auxiliary. • Barry Resnick, who has volunteered at the Senior Center for the past seven years, first in the kitchen and later in the gift/thrift shop. He has also volunteered to raise funds for ALS research and to help ALS patients. • Wanda Villalon, who for the past eight years has volunteered to serve lunch at the Senior Center and with the Charity Workshop. She is also involved with the Long Island Crochet Guild and the organization Care to Knit, crocheting and knitting hand-made items to donate to various local organizations.

As a result of their fundraising efforts, Harborfields’ Oldfield Middle School students raised more than $16,000 to purchase a Trackchair, a motorized chair that enhances mobility, for a wounded veteran through The Independence Fund organization. During a special pep rally event on May 13th, students witnessed the results of their hard work when veteran, Julia Torres, received her new Trackchair. The Independence Fund, a nonprofit organization, supports injured and wounded veterans by providing the tools they need to achieve their independence and freedom. During the course of the school year, Oldfield Middle School students, faculty and PTA organized more than 16 different fundraising events to raise funds. Exceeding their anticipated goal of $15,000,
the school raised $16,000 to buy a ‘Zoom’ Trackchair. In honor of the assembly, students, coordinated by grade level, arrived to school dressed in a red, white or blue shirt. Following the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by faculty and students, Principal Joanne Giordano kicked off the presentation with words of gratitude to the students for raising money for this special cause and appreciation to the veterans in attendance for their service. Assistant Principal Joseph Castoro introduced the next guest speaker to the podium. Tommy Rieman, a retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. and executive director of The Independence Fund, expressed his gratitude and lauded the students as heroes for their contribution and thoughtful efforts. Members of the student government
presented Rieman with a check for $16,000 made out to The Independence Fund. “Today we are going to change the life of someone who lost their mobility due to their sacrifices to this nation,” said Rieman. “I want you to walk away today standing proud, you guys are the heroes of today and tomorrow. Oldfield Middle School, the world should know that you are true American patriots.” Filled with gratitude for the students’ efforts, veteran Torres, expressed her appreciation and encouraged the students that “nothing is impossible.” “I am in such gratitude for the kids who raised so much money in such a short period of time,” said Torres. “It is truly admirable and from the bottom of my heart I thank them.”

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based notfor-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Children’s Services Program. “We’ve come a long way from the days of supporting 15 infants at their homes and 42 pre-school children at the Bay Shore Children’s Center,” said Noreen Clemens, Director of ACLD’s Children’s Services and an original member of the Children’s Services team. “But we know now as we knew then that it’s critically important to make sure children with developmental disabilities get off to a good start in their educational lives.”
ACLD’s Children’s Services moved into the Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore in 1990; today, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore – which was added to the program’s offerings in 2014 – is the home of ACLD’s learning and recreation programs for children with autism, learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities. Offerings at the Center include a full-day and half-day preschool classes which serve 65 children with developmental disabilities, a Head Start program which serves ten children, and an after-school program for 37 school-aged children. The Center is also home to a summer camp by the Great South Bay YMCA. ACLD enrolls children in the camp with the support of a grant from the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). In addition, the
Kramer Learning Center continues to operate, providing comprehensive diagnostic, educational and therapeutic services to 160 children with developmental disabilities, along with a Head Start program which serves 20 children.
