Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

A combined effort by the Town of Huntington, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244, Greenlawn Fire District and Greenlawn Fire Department has resulted in the refurbishment of the Greenlawn Monument. A special thanks to Art Stone for the restoration and the Greenlawn Civic Association for their support in this effort. The monument, now located in Greenlawn Memorial Park, was originally dedicated as a memorial to those Greenlawn residents who fought in World War I. Rededicated in 1960 as a monument to “All Those Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice,” the landmark has been in its present location since 1996 at the corner of Pulaski Road and Broadway, Greenlawn. “At last year’s Veterans’ Day ceremony, the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 and the Greenlawn Fire Department Park
Stewards approached me with their idea of restoring and enhancing the veterans monument in Greenlawn Memorial Park,” stated Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. “It was my honor and privilege in assisting the A.L. Post 1244 in this important endeavor. I would like to commend Dennis Madden, Commander of Post 1244 and Bill Irving of the Greenlawn Fire Department for their dedication and commitment to our nation’s veterans and community,” added Cuthbertson. The original World War I Plaque and the 1960 dedication plaque have been refinished to their original condition. In addition four smaller plaques have been added to the sides of the monument, commemorating those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the current Global War on Terror. A beautiful new eagle will replace
the monument’s existing eagle. A few days prior to the monument’s unveiling, a Purple Heart medal will be sealed into the base of the monument in honor of all those who were killed or wounded in all of America’s conflicts. In addition, a National Defense Ribbon will be included in honor of all who have worn our country’s uniform. The refurbished monument will be unveiled after the Memorial Day Parade on Monday morning, May 29th, just prior to the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony will begin shortly after the conclusion of the Greenlawn Memorial Day Parade at Greenlawn Memorial Park, at the corner of Pulaski Rd. and Broadway. The parade begins at 9 a.m. at East Maple Rd. and Broadway in Greenlawn. Ceremony will follow at the conclusion of the parade. All members of the public are cordially invited to attend.
ALS Donation Throughout the year, the SJC Long Island Recreation Club organized several fundraising initiatives with a goal to raise $2,000 for the 20th anniversary of the ALS Ride for Life. Michele Frati, senior administrative assistant in the Office of Student Life, introduced the Cash
Bucket (instead of Ice Bucket) Challenge which raised $900 and had all SJC Long Island clubs participating. The largest amount of $308 was raised by Alpha Gamma Delta and the Student Government Association matched the amount. The students also designed and sold t-shirts
raising an additional $715, held a bowling fundraiser that brought in $830 and received $375 in other donations. The Recreation Club exceeded their fundraising goal and were able to present Chris Pendergast, president of ALS Ride for Life, a check for $3,000 on Monday, May 1st, 2017.

Discovering Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heart-felt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61-year mission for years to come. Family and friends gathered May 13th at the Town of Huntington’s Alfred Walker Park to dedicate a bench in memory of two 10-yearold boys who died exactly 50 years before when they drowned in a sump adjacent to the park. According to news accounts at the time, on May 13th, 1967, Count Ramon Edwards and Kevin Agudio either scaled the five-foot-high fence or went through an unhinged gate to get into the 40-foot-deep sump, which contained about eight feet of water. The boys apparently had used a fourfoot-square construction
pallet as a makeshift raft; one of the boys was found floating in the water and the other was found a few hours later in the mud at the bottom of the Suffolk County-owned sump. A combined funeral service was held for the boys at Mt. Calvary Church, but, as was noted recently by one of their friends, Kevin Bailey, “many in the town, in particular, those like myself who were thought too young to attend the combined services, were not afforded closure. Add to that the fact there was no formal support systems yet in place in the schools or community, such as grief counseling. Many of

The resolution follows more than a year’s worth of discussions with Huntington CALM (Citizens Appeal for Leafblower Moderation), a citizen’s advisory and advocacy group with over 1,600 supporters whose goal is to limit the use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers by commercial landscapers from May 15 through September 15, when residents spend more time outdoors. CALM representatives have appeared before the Town Board and met with Supervisor Petrone and Councilwoman Berland. The group also arranged a test of battery-powered equipment at Heckscher Park for Town officials. “I appreciate Huntington CALM’s efforts to raise our consciousness about the environmental effects and health dangers of
gas-powered landscaping equipment, including significant noise pollution,” Supervisor Petrone said. “Heckscher Park and Town Hall are perfect locations for a demonstration program to test the feasibility and efficiency of batterypowered equipment that reduces emissions and operates at significantly lower decibel levels than gas-powered equivalents. I look forward to seeing, and not hearing, the results.” “This resolution is a great first step to protecting our environment and reducing air and noise pollution in our Town,” Councilwoman Berland said. “Many constituents have contacted me to restrict the use of Gas Powered Leaf Blowers to address their quality-oflife concerns. The Huntington Town Board, at its May 9th meeting, took a significant step toward establishing a demonstration program replacing gas-fueled landscaping equipment with battery-operated units at Heckscher Park and Town Hall, creating a “Green Zone” with reduced emissions and less noise. The Board approved a resolution co-sponsored by Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwoman Susan A. Berland to retain the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) to conduct a study that will analyze the Town’s existing landscape practices, recommend the appropriate, costeffective battery powered equipment and instruct Town personnel on the use, care and maintenance of the devices. Headquartered in Studio City, California, AGZA is a leader in a nationwide effort to help communities address noise and air pollution issues. It provides certification and accreditation in zero-emission landscape maintenance strategies; educates individuals, property owners, and landscape maintenance professionals to reduce or eliminate the use of gasoline powered

Building a Difference Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students in the Habitat for Humanity Club have helped the community this year by raising over $4,000 to donate to Habitat for Humanity. Through fundraising efforts, the club raised money with the majority coming from selling cheesecakes around the Thanksgiving season and
had the opportunity to participate in two builds this school year. Under the guidance of their club advisors Jen Basford and Dr. Arnold Kamhi and chaperones Sue Mendonca and Ricky Greening, students worked hard to construct the floors of a house in Mastic Beach and in Wyandanch. About 15 students attended each build and were selected
based on their activity and participation in the club. “The students work together very well, listen to directions and understand all of the safety precautions which they don’t take lightly,” said Ms. Basford. “I have seen so many students step up on these builds to become leaders in their pack.”

songwriter, producer and world-renowned guitar virtuoso, who has released music, played international festivals and headlined tours for over 20 years. As lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses (20062014), Bumblefoot played to sold-out shows all over the world. Bumblefoot’s unique ‘fretless guitar’ can be heard throughout GNR’s 2008 Chinese Democracy album. Bumblefoot’s recent success is his Little Brother Is Watching album
- an eccentric, upbeat collection of epic, modern rock with haunting melodies, huge choruses and witty lyrics about life in the digital age and beyond. Along with his many musical collaborations, Bumblefoot has worked as an adjunct professor in teaching music production, and he works with U.S. embassies around the world on cross-cultural music programs. Additionally, he
has his own line of awardwinning hot sauces, and he works with dozens of international charities visiting orphanages and children’s hospitals around the world (with guitar in hand).
