with Jamie Lynn Ryan This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

While I hope I never have to utilize the skills learned in Stop the Bleed, the training could one day prove to be the difference between life and death.” According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize life-threatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing (filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth.

Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure. Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions to install Stop the Bleed kits, which include tourniquets, alongside defibrillators in public venues and at schools. The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Herricks, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Plainview, Westbury, Uniondale and Levittown among others. Knowledge gained through Stop the Bleed is most often associated with treating injuries following mass casualties, gun violence or car crashes, but sports injuries can also be very serious. By empowering the Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding. “The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop. “Empowering Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed helps round out their capabilities if faced with serious bleeding, enabling them to provide assistance to save lives and limbs. The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Student Council recently held an anti-bullying t-shirt designing contest, and during the district’s May 3rd Board of Education Meeting, the winner from each school was recognized. Winning

such as “Make Bullying Extinct” and “Be a Knight, Do What’s Right!” With an overwhelming amount of submissions, students’ creations conveyed the heartbeat of the Elwood Union Free School District, portraying inclusivity, kindness and acceptance.

Effort Makes a Difference The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School World Language Honor Society spent their Saturday morning giving back to the community and cleaning up the Huntington Beach Community Association (HBCA) on April 28th. Junior and senior members, along with

adviser Nicole Gendjoian, spent three hours collecting trash and cleaning the beach. In addition, they helped distribute mulch on the landscaped portions of the grounds. The HBCA is the largest privately owned beach on the North Shore of the island, and

serves the members of the community in many ways - and keeping it clean is important. “These students are always so happy to help, and truly enjoy seeing the difference their efforts make in the community,” said Ms. Gendjoian.

Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District, was awarded a New York State Excellence in Teaching Award at a surprise assembly on May 10th. Mrs. Held was one of 60 teachers granted this award throughout New York State. Third-grade classes were called to the auditorium under the guise of an educational assembly. Visitor Dr. Guillermo Linares, the acting president of New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, attended

on behalf of Governor Cuomo to present the award to Mrs. Held. When her name was announced, the entire third-grade class, and teachers and administration in attendance, went wild. In addition to an engraved plaque, Mrs. Held also received a $5,000 check. To be chosen for this award, teachers must exemplify passion for education, mission, expertise and possess outstanding teaching skills, making learning exciting and leveling the playing field for all students to succeed. “First-rate education

Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

Fit Club Places First

Students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School within the Harborfields Central School District who participate in the school’s Fit Club finished first out of 24 schools in the second annual Suffolk Zone Fit Club Competition on May 8th. The goal of Fit Clubs is to help students learn how to live active, healthy lifestyles, while

being a part of a team, tackling challenges and having fun. The competition, which took place at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Sayville, consisted of teams comprised of students from grades four and five all throughout Suffolk County. Each school created four teams of 24 students - six boys

and six girls from grades four and five. Events included exercises such as box jumps, bear crawls, situps, agility runs and tire flips. The competition was fierce but the members of the team demonstrated tremendous grit, teamwork and perseverance from start to finish.

Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential beneﬁts of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can

help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may beneﬁt by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

5 fun ways to get fit Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Music can improve performance during a workout and may actually take your mind off of strenuous or repetitive activity. Tunes also can be coordinated to the workout. Songs that feature lyrics such as run, punch, push or groove, can reinforce movements in the routine, offers the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Also, tailor songs to coordinate to the beats per minute of different activities. Strength activities and endurance activities can feature songs with higher BPMs.

It was an unforgettable scene at Islip MacArthur Airport this past weekend as teenage U.S. Naval Sea Cadets lined up at 6 a.m. in Honor Guard formation to help send off 50 World War II and Korean War veterans on a memorial trip to Washington DC. The Honor Guard carried the American flag that these veterans had fought so hard to defend, as well as flags representing each service branch of the U.S. military with which the veterans had served – the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The veterans

hailed from villages and towns all over Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the war stories they shared for this Honor Flightproviding a glimpse into the type of honorable duties performed by the 40,000+ veterans that reside on Long Island. The Honor Flight veterans spent the entire day in Washington DC, visiting sites including the World War II and Korean War Memorials, as well as The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, before returning to Islip long after taps would have played. The

complimentary trip was a small tribute to those from Long Island that served our nation in war. “Your country said that it needed you, and you said, ‘Yes, I will go,’” the 50 veterans were told by Bill Jones, the President of Honor Flight Long Island. “You had never been out of your hometown, yet you found yourselves in places you’d never heard of. At a time of your lives when you should have been concerned with simple things…your high school prom, maybe applying to college…maybe settling down and starting a

family of your own…you, as ordinary citizens were asked to put on a uniform in service to your country. I thank you for answering the call to duty and the privilege of escorting you to yourmemorial.” Jones was joined by 50+ volunteers who served as escorts for each of the veterans. After the morning began with the Naval Sea Cadets’ Honor Guard ceremony (the youths were from the Theodore Roosevelt Division based in East Moriches), the veterans were whisked off on their flight to tour DC sights. Upon return to Islip MacArthur Airport, there was a crowd of more than 200 waiting, and again the Theodore Roosevelt Division Naval Sea Cadets were in formation welcoming the veterans back to Long Island soil, with many a misty eye in the airport. Some highlights of the service of those on the Honor Flight: Army Air Force mechanic and gunner

Stanley Pollack, of Wading River, served aboard B-29 bombers in the Pacific Theater in WWII. “Flying through anti-aircraft was the most harrowing as the enemy shot shells at us in puffs and flak attacks.” Navy Yeoman Peter Pascale, of Ridge, was on a ship one-half mile out from the invasion of Iwo Jima and was in range of the USS Indianapolis when it sunk following a secret mission that directly contributed to the end of WWII. Marine Corps rifleman Emanuel Poretta remembered a “crazy thing” in Korea. He was taking a shower from a truck with hot water. “A red alert sounded, and I found my rifle, helmet and ammo belt. No clothes!” Poretta was left to hand out supplies in his birthday suit. Richard Cardone of Farmingdale was a Navy Damage Controlman during the Korean War. When a terrible accident happened aboard ship,

he saved the lives of two trapped men, carrying the unconscious men to safety. “All my training in the Navy really prepared me for it.” Edwin Cartoski, of Greenport, served as a WWII Marine Corps pilot. When Admiral Halsey lost three destroyers and 100 aircraft to a typhoon, Cartoski flew Corsairs and Hell Cats from dawn to dusk straight off factory lines to California so they could be shipped to the war zone. Sgt. Tess Pierce Garber, from Jericho, was a WWII teletype operator in the Marine Signal Corps. Among the secret daily reports she saw from the battlefield was one with terrible news – it carried the name of the only son of her Mom’s friend; he’d been killed in action. Gennaro Iorio, from Bellmore, was an MD in the US Army Medical Corps in WWII, assigned to hospitals in France and Germany, and he assisted

Simple Acts During the second week of May, students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District gave back to the community by giving up portions of their homerooms and recesses to create fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus an organization that gives homemade blankets to children in need. Students have already assembled more than 50 blankets. Librarian Judy Boshnack

applied for and was awarded a grant through the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation (HACEF), and purchased fleece blanket kits to donate to those in need. After the blankets were prepped by Mrs. Boshnack and the rest of the library staff, students gathered around tables and knotted the sides of each fleece, making thick and cozy creations ready for those who needed them.

In addition, students, staff, and local community members have created crochet squares to be connected to make additional blankets to be donated. “It’s a beautiful way to give back to the community,” said Mrs. Boshnack, “and it teaches our students that simple acts of kindness can truly make a difference, and help others.” COUNTY RECOGNITION - Members of Northport High School’s Environmental Team were recognized with certificates of appreciation from the Suffolk County Legislature on May 10th. Students were invited to the Suffolk County Health Committee meeting by Legislator William Spencer to be recognized for their hard work on and data collection for the county’s bag bill that was implemented earlier this year. Legislator Susan A. Berland joined County Executive Steve Bellone and District Attorney Tim Sini at the Long Island Ducks home opener to recognize the Heroes of the Game. The Heroes of the Game program honors local Veterans or active duty

service members at every home game. Every Hero of the Game receives 10 complimentary tickets to their honorary game so that they are able to share their special night with family and friends. “The Heroes of the Game program is a special way to say thank you to our

Veterans, their families and friends,” stated Legislator Berland. “I want to thank the Long Island Ducks for recognizing our Veterans and giving the thousands of Long Islanders who attend the Ducks home games a chance to learn about their service and sacrifice.”

On May 9th, author and staff development leader Donalyn Miller visited educators within the Elwood Union Free School District. Mrs. Miller, also known as the “Book Whisperer,” is passionate about the importance of “free-choice reading,” and travels all over the country sharing guidance and resources with educators to help foster the love of reading in children. During her presentation, Mrs. Miller traveled through different genres such as short non-

fiction, young adult and graphic novels, recommending new books from each wheelhouse. She emphasized the importance of teaching stories that promote inclusivity, and exposing students to stories from diverse people groups that they may not have heard otherwise - stories about important historical figures like Harriet Tubman, Harvey Milk and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Mrs. Miller recommended different approaches to teaching

these books in the classroom, helping students to develop their own reading identities. One such approach was an unconventional way of study - focusing on the text itself, then the historical context, and finally, the illustrations; each as a separate entity. “As lovers of literature, we know the books we read can truly change and shape us,” Mrs. Miller said, “and we should do everything in our power to help our students recognize that same truth for themselves.”

front lines in the Korean War. He received three Bronze Stars. Val Marino was a fighter pilot with the Air Force flying daily missions against Russian MIGs in Korea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing an amazing 125 missions and also awarded a Silver Star! He later became a research test pilot, and last year was appointed to a Presidential Advisory Board due to his

North Korean experiences. Robert Anziano of Islip Terrace joined the Navy, havingbeen in a junior Navy program akin to the Naval Sea Cadets.As an instrument technician at a Naval Air Station, he saluted Tyrone Power every morning – a swashbuckling film star who was also in uniform.
