Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.

One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. Glenn English teacher Megan Gieser seeks to bring lessons to life for her students, and recently, she did so by spending many hours with a few of her fellow teachers to create a “breakout” lesson revolving around the critically acclaimed novel, “The Things They Carried.” “Breakout” lessons are similar to the popular “Escape the Room” scenarios in that students have to decipher clues and take action to

solve — and escape — a situation. Two classes were broken into teams: those stationed in Vietnam and those “home.” While deciphering separate sets of clues amongst themselves, teams had to also communicate via walkie-talkie from separate rooms. “Look closer at the photo of the man protesting with fire,” Gio, a student on the Vietnam team, urged the home team through a walkie-talkie during the lesson.

Students navigated through provided clues using black lights, news articles and images from the Vietnam War to open three different lock boxes. Without knowledge of the novel or historical context, getting through the challenges would have been impossible, but each class completed the challenge with mere minutes, or seconds, to spare, showcasing their knowledge of the novel as well as their abilities to work together.

After completing the challenge, teams were ranked, similar to military rankings, by their success. “Students learned that effort, teamwork, awareness and knowledge are key factors in succeeded as a unit,” said Ms. Gieser. Additionally, the following week, students participated in a fitness lesson to help simulate the things soldiers carried during Vietnam, as well as many physical challenges and obstacles the soldiers faced during that time period.

Students Take Part In Health Challenge Ward Melville High School’s HOSA club participated in the 2019 Northwell Health’s Spark Challenge to gain a better understanding of the various STEM careers in the medical field. During the event, the students met and spent the day with the health and safety coordinator at Northwell Health. They learned just

what that job entailed and how this coordinator needs to work with many different departments in the medical field in order to make the business of health care run smoothly for staff, families and patients combined. The safety coordinator works with the environmental administrator, the physician’s assistant, to the lab technician specialist,

training them to help provide the best possible care for everyone. Before concluding the day, the students met with their peers from all throughout Long Island to learn about the different career opportunities available to them and network about their similar interests. Orchard Estate Of Woodbury Woodbury, N.Y. – Orchard Estate of Woodbury, a Benchmark assisted living and memory care community opening this summer in Woodbury, N.Y., today announced they are sponsoring Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) and the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) Stamp Out Hunger event.

The donated food helps replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the supplies of which historically dwindle during the summer time.

This week, as part of the annual event, Long Island residents are asked to leave non-perishable food donations by their mailbox for the letter carrier to pick up. Last year, the event generated more than 300,000 pounds of food

do our part to provide food for those who are most vulnerable,” says Doug Cormack, executive director of Orchard Estate. “We are happy and eager to help support such an important cause.” When complete, Orchard Estate of Woodbury will offer 89 assisted living and memory care units and spacious common areas totaling 74,000 square feet, which can accommodate up to 102 residents. Set on 3.8 prime acres located on 900 Woodbury Road near the intersection of Route 135 and the Long Island Expressway, the environmentally friendly

community will feature a modern, contemporary design and amenities such as a bistro, wellness center, family room with full kitchen and dining room, second floor balcony and landscaped walking paths. The community currently has a welcome center at 550 Woodbury Road in Plainview where it is accepting reservations. It is expected to have an enhanced assisted living license enabling it to provide a wide range of care; licensure is pending. Mock Trial Team Makes Semifinals East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team finished as semifinalists in the annual Long Island Law Day tournament held at Northport High School. It was the fifth consecutive year that East Islip has brought home an award from this event. East Islip was represented by freshmen Emily Blair and Grace Gerondel, sophomores Jacob Arens, Justin Martinez; Vince Papillo, Kaitlyn Rice and Kim Turtell; and senior Ashley Malcolm. During the tournament, sponsored by Project

PATCH and Touro Law Center, 16 teams from Nassau and Suffolk counties competed in oneon-one mini trials. For each round, students were given a one-page fact pattern and had 12 minutes to prepare to present an entire legal case, including opening and closing statements and witness examinations. East Islip competed in five rounds of trials, finally falling to Massapequa in the semis. “Long Island Law Day is an excellent way to exhibit student learning, because coaches may

not help the students during the 12-minute reading and prep time or during the trial itself,” said coach Patsy Lester. “Team members must work together quickly and cooperatively to apply their knowledge of the law to the facts and make a convincing presentation to the judges. The outcome was particularly impressive since most of our students were underclassmen. I’m proud of the hard work the team put in. Food Chain Fun

Fifth-graders at Thomas J. Lahey recently learned about the wonders of the food chain through hands-on activities and fun simulations in Ms. Rebecca Turano’s class. Students had the opportunity to create a live simulation of a food web by taking on different producer, consumer and predator

students recorded and compared their results. To wrap up the unit, students dissected owl pellets to see the firsthand results of the food chain from producer, to consumer, to predator. “ H a n d s - o n simulations help every type of learner,” said Ms. Turano. “It helps students to realize the importance of trial

roles and tossing a ball of yarn from person to person, creating a complex and interlocking unit. Later in the week, students participated in a lab where groups of students had five seconds as a specific animal — mice, snakes or hawks — to scurry around and gather food. Afterwards,

A Step In The “Write” Direction Northport High School sophomore Hope Jorgensen was recently accepted into Skidmore College’s NYS Summer Institute for Young Writers. After submitting a short young adult fiction piece, Hope was selected as one of only 40 students across the country to attend this summer program. From July 1-13, students

will dorm at Skidmore College and receive daily instruction in the many types of creative writing such as poetry and fiction. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage in giving and receiving critique from their peers. Hope, who has been spinning stories in her head since she was a little

girl, commented that when she got the news she had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. “I’ve always been inspired by authors like J.K. Rowling and Steven King, and really want to be a writer someday,” she said, “and being given this opportunity feels like a big step in the right direction. I’m so excited!”
