Memorial Day and Veterans Day each honor the military, though the two holidays are not the same. Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Monday in May, honors the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the American military. Many communities host memorial ceremonies honoring their fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, ensuring such soldiers’ bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten. While many people now view
Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reflect on and recognize the military personnel who lost their lives in defense of freedom and the American way of life. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 and recognizes all men and women who have served in the military. Veterans Day coincides with Remembrance Day, which is a celebrated by the Commonwealth of
Nations, an association of 53 member states with connections to the British Empire. Though Veterans Day and Remembrance Day are each celebrated on November 11, the latter recognizes armed forces members who died in the line of duty, making it more similar to Memorial Day than Veterans Day. It’s not uncommon for people to recognize fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, but many use the holiday to express their appreciation to existing veterans.
Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and
will still go out and put themselves at risk to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. The First Virtual Bethpage Air Show Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce the launch of the Bethpage Virtual Air Show. Taking place throughout the months of May and June, the virtual experience is being organized to offer Bethpage Air Show fans entertaining and exciting activities to participate in online, following this year’s show cancellation. “We can never replace the Bethpage Air Show and of course, are still saddened to know that our hundreds of thousands of fans won’t be with us on-site at Jones Beach this year,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “However, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to now connect our fans with show performers and organizers in a special way. It's always the right time of year for fresh apple pie
C
ertain foods are synonymous with particular holidays or times of year. For example, few people can imagine celebrating Valentine’s Day without ample supplies of chocolate on hand. And what summer barbecue is complete without grilled hot dogs and hamburgers? While these foods and others are must-haves during certain times of the year, that doesn’t mean they cannot be enjoyed whenever a craving arises. Apples, and particularly apple pie, are a staple of many holiday season celebrations. But apple pie is just as delicious in March, April, May, etc., as it is during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s especially true when the apples are fresh. Whether yours is a seasonal or non-seasonal craving for apple pie, be sure to satisfy it with this recipe for “French Apple Pie” from Mollie Cox Bryan’s “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies” (Ten Speed Press). FRENCH APPLE PIE

Separately, combine the corn syrup, flour and sugar and mix well, then add to the raisins and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool until the mixture is just warm, about 10 to 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with 1 rolled-out crust.

Peel the apples, cut them into thin wedges, and put them in a large bowl. Separately, combine the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, then add to the apples and gently stir until evenly mixed.
Spread the apple mixture in the crust in an even layer, then spread the raisin filling evenly over the apples. Brush the rim of the crust with water, cover with the second rolled-out crust, seal and flute or crimp the edges, and cut a steam vent in the center. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 1 to 2 hours, until completely cool.
To make the icing, combine the sugar and water and mix well. Add the butter and mix until smooth. Brush over the top of the cooled pie before serving.
Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the milk over part of the flour mixture. Gently toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Sprinkle another tablespoon of milk over another dry part, toss with a fork and push to the side of the bowl. Congratulations to Northport High School senior Thomas Fodor who was recently accepted into the United States Naval Academy. On June 25, he will be inducted into the Naval Academy Class of 2024 and will begin six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training as part of the Academy’s “Plebe,” or freshman class. Thomas is a threeseason varsity athlete in Northport High School’s cross-country, winter and spring track and field teams. He is team captain in all three sports and has earned numerous Section, State and National honors throughout his successful
career at Northport. “More importantly, he is a gentleman in every sense of the word,” Mark Dantuono, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics, said. “He is what all should strive to follow and embody.” Thomas plans to continue his passion for track and field in the academy, where he will have no internet access, nor access to television, music or movies. Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Academy’s “plebe” and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. Last
year the Naval Academy received over 16,000 applications for the Class of 2023. The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenges that await them. As the summer progresses, the new midshipmen rapidly assimilate basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing, infantry drill and handling yard patrol craft. Training sessions also involve moral, mental, physical or professional development and team-building skills.

SALUTING THE VOLUNTEERS WHO VOLUNTEER - The American Cancer Society honors all volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Pictured here: Nathan Levinton volunteers as an entertainer for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. These days he is volunteering his time and money to create face shields for emergency responders. The American Cancer Society’s cadre of 1.5 million dedicated volunteers are not only helping fight cancer but using their skills in unique ways to help those affected by Coronavirus. Nathan Levinton is a career counselor for the National Guard. His passion for music has led to a part time job as a DJ, to which he regularly volunteers to play music in support of American Cancer Society events such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life. These days, the Medford resident has a new way of giving back to the community through his hobby as a 3D printer. When the COVID-19 crisis began and with supplies in demand, Nathan decided to utilize his resources to create face shields for medical professionals and first responders. The response has been so great that he is finding it hard to keep up. He’s already donated 170 face shields and 150 mask extenders plus has another 6-dozen ready for use in Suffolk county. He’s working alone and
in tandem with a Long Island wide network of creators who are making supplies for our first responders. “Nathan is a volunteer hero in my mind,” says Brittany Lawton, a community development manager at the Society. “When Gov. Cuomo asked for ingenuity, Nathan took the lead in helping others. His talent motivates walkers at Jones Beach each October during Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and today his talent and his commitment to service is keeping others safe. “The American Cancer Society strives to create a culture of gratitude for all volunteers,” says Marie Cimaglia, Director of Community Development on Long Island and NYC. “This National Volunteer Week, we take an extra moment to express gratitude to each and every volunteer who has joined our mission, and the mission to help us through this pandemic,” she said. Cimaglia continues by saying that during this difficult time, cancer won’t stop; and neither
will we. “Despite cancelled events, the cancer-fighting work of the Society continues,” she said. As the COVID-19 crisis grows larger every day, cancer patients – many of whom already have compromised immune systems - are more vulnerable than ever. The public is asked to stay informed during this crisis at cancer.org/coronavirus. Donations are being accepted at cancer.org/ rapidresponse. How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra

Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because
they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl
(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective
at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

According to the high-quality ground beef purveyor Schweid & Sons, the most common ground beef choice among burger chefs is 80 percent lean, 20 percent fat. Law prohibits the sale of any ground beef with a fat content above 30 percent. While some consumers may scoff at the notion of
buying beef that’s 20 percent fat, Schweid & Sons notes that the fat that surrounds the meat gives it a rich, juicy flavor. In fact, Schweid & Sons says that beef with lowerfat compositions, such as 85 percent lean and 15 percent fat, tends to dry out fast, which can adversely affect the flavor of the burger.
3. Brush the grill grate and coat it with oil. Put the burgers on the grill, cover and cook for 7 minutes, flipping after about 4 minutes, for mediumdone (150 F, slightly pink). Add a minute per side for well-done (160 F). 4. If you are making cheeseburgers, put 2 slices of cheese on each burger 1 minute before the burgers are going to be done. 5. To toast the buns, put them cut-sides down directly over the fire for the last minute of cooking. 6. If serving the burgers directly from the grill, serve on the buns. If the burgers will sit, even for a few minutes, keep the buns and the burgers separate until just before eating. The best garnishes for burgers are the classics: a slice of ripe beefsteak tomato, a mound of sautéed onions, a leaf of romaine lettuce, a dollop of coleslaw or a few slices of dill pickles.

NHS Science Department Donates ‘Goggles For Docs’ Thanks to the humanitarian efforts of Northport High School science teachers Karyn Libretto and George Reamy, doctors and medical personnel at the Department of Internal Medicine at Jacobi have been supplied with more than 300 protective goggles. The teachers rallied together with their colleagues to collect and donate goggles through Goggles for Docs – an effort to get protective supplies into the hands of healthcare workers during the coronavirus pandemic. In a letter of appreciation, the Department of Internal Medicine at Jacobi wrote, “It has been an overwhelming joy for all the residents to feel the support coming from various individuals

East Northport MS Student Gives Back To Community
East-Northport Middle School student, Kiersten Gorman, may not be able to complete her coursework in Home and Careers while schools are closed, but she is making a difference in the lives of the community. After hearing about the shortage of medical supplies on the news, Kiersten decided to sell homemade masks to those in need. She regularly takes sewing classes, which were canceled due to the pandemic, but said that she wanted to give
back in any way that she could. “I thought it would be wonderful to be able to make masks for friends, family and anyone in need within the community,” she said. “I know these masks might not help the staff on the front lines but they can help my grandparents, my friends and anyone needing protection when going out.” Kiersten, as an animal lover, has also decided to donate half of the proceeds to the American Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to help stop the abuse of animals. “I chose this charity because I love animals and I hate to see animals being treated poorly,” she said. Kiersten’s mother, Laura Gorman, said that her daughter “missed being in the classroom so much, but at least she is still learning life’s important lessons and that is to help the community and always give back.
