help us help kids DAY CARE VISIT - A happy group of four-year olds from Abiding Presence Lutheran Church’s preschool made their annual visit to the participants at St. Johnland Nursing Center’s Adult Day Health Care program. After performing songs for the appreciative audience, they had an ice cream treat and presented everyone with special flowers that they had made for the occasion!
Bike-A-Thon Benefit
On May 2nd, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws hosted their firstever Inlet Ride Bike-AThon in Westhampton Beach. Over 100 bicyclists participated in this event, with funds raised going to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Bicyclists enjoyed a 28-mile ride along Dune Road from the Moriches Inlet at Cupsogue Beach to the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays and back. Refreshments were
provided along the way and prizes were awarded to the top three riders who raised more than $500. The first 400 entrants to register received a free Inlet Ride T-shirt. After the event, all the riders were treated to lunch. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality,
dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Brought To Life In an effort to inspire entrepreneurship and creativity, eighth-grade students in Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently participated in the 2015 Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge. Under the advisement of family and consumer science teacher Christy Roxo, students developed a product to submit in either the, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” or “Masters of Invention” challenge. To enter the “It’s Not Easy Being Green” competition, students used recycled items to create
a repurposed reusable product. Participants in the “Masters of Inventions” contest developed a concept and prototype along with the price, place and promotion for their invention. Both challenges required students to complete an application and follow the LI FACS four-point scale rubric. Selected from all the middle school student applicants who entered the challenge, Oldfield Middle School student Matt Miller won the grand prize for his “Manplow,” in the “Masters of Invention” which he built with a golf bag cart and shovel to help
manually lift snow and Sabrina Ventre was the winner for her iPod jewelry tray made completely from recycled iPod boxes in the, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” challenge. On May 14th, Miller and Ventre were recognized at the LI FACS Challenge Student Reception held at the H. Frank Carey JuniorSenior High School in Franklin Square where they each received a cash prize of $100 for their hard work and creativity. “This is a great exercise if they ever want to be self employed or an entrepreneur in the future,” said Roxo.

Disability Awareness As a culminating activity for disability awareness month, the Elwood Special Education Parent-Teacher Association (SEPTA) sponsored a wheelchair basketball game, featuring a team of 14 Elwood students and faculty against the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Nassau County Kings men’s team on April 30th. To kick off the event, members of the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School American Sign Language class signed the National Anthem sung
by an aspiring music group from New York City called “D’Votion.” Before the game began, Elwood SEPTA President Terri Zenobio introduced each of the Elwood students and faculty members who made up the Elwood Knight Riders team coached by Elwood Middle School student Meghan Chiodo. Following the same rules and regulations as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the game consisted of two twentyminute halves. Members of the community cheered as both teams demonstrated
exceptional athleticism. In a close finish, the Nassau Kings were victorious over the Elwood Knight Riders with a final score of 54-52. “We wanted to bring attention to the general public in the school district all the wonderful contributions that people with disabilities have to offer,” said Zenobio. “We strive to build a community that represents the diverse nature of Elwood that’s all inclusive where everyone’s strengths are represented and respected.”

In an effort to provide parents with the knowledge and tools to academically support their children, the Elwood Union Free School District curriculum department hosted “Elwood Parent University” on May 6th for parents who have children in or entering Elwood Middle School and Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. Led by teacher volunteers and administration, parents took on the role of students and attended
two 30-minute sessions. During this time, parents engaged in authentic lessons in STEM education, mathematics, Google Drive programs and asked questions along the way. Focused on the themes of how to keep your child learning throughout the summer and how to help your child as he or she prepares for the middle or high school experience, Parent University offered parents numerous strategies and information
on ways to support their child through the academic journey. “The goal of Parent University is to educate parents about what their children are learning in the classroom so they are better prepared to help their children when they get home,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gary Furman.

Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

United By Reading show-off their reading creativity. On Monday, students made bookmarks about their favorite book, on Tuesday, they read with a partner from a different class, and on Wednesday, students created “wanted posters” for their favorite book character. Thursday’s activity encouraged students to interview their parents about reading and students celebrated “Reada-T-shirt Day” on Friday, during which students and
faculty wore T-shirts with words. Facilitated by a community effort, members of the Elwood Board of Education and administrators throughout the district visited Boyd students as guest readers to share their favorite book. Following the read aloud, the guest reader led a book discussion for students to share their thoughts and ask questions about the book.
Walking The Carpet As a culmination to their persuasive writing unit, students in Stefanie Gallagher’s second-grade class at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free school District walked the red carpet with their book nominations for the Red Carpet Book Awards on May 6th. Students struck as pose as they entered a room full
of “paparazzi” made up of administration, friends and family excited to be part of this red carpet event. Following an introduction by Gallagher, each student shared the reason they selected their book to nominate. Some of the book nominations included best book, weirdest book, nicest character and best illustrations. As a class, the students
selected four nominees for favorite book in Mrs. Gallagher’s class. Following a thunderous drum roll, Gallagher announced that “Mercy Watson to the Rescue” by Kate DiCamillo won the award for favorite book. To conclude the event, members of the audience had the opportunity meet the “superstar” students and get their autographs.

In early May, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted a PTA and BETA (Bringing Enrichment to All) sponsored Math 24 Game Night where students demonstrated their mathematic abilities and challenged their peers in a fun and educational environment. The 24 Game is an arithmetical card game in which the objective is to find a way to manipulate four integers so that the end result is 24. Addition, subtraction, multiplication or division and sometimes other operations, may be
used to make four digits from one to nine equal 24. The player who completes the task first earns 1, 2, or 3 points depending on the level of difficulty. Coordinated by Assistant Principal Marguerite Greene and teacher Christine Mayr, third-, fourth- and fifthgrade students put their mathematic skills to the test during several round of competitive game play. Following the two-hour event, three students from each grade emerged as the 24 Game first place trophy winners. Congratulations to fifth-grade student Ashley Xie, fourth-grade
student Alexandra Ebanks and third-grade student Mia McNally for demonstrating outstanding mathematic skills. In addition, medals were distributed to the following students who placed in the top four of their grade. Second place went to Brooke Cheskes, Quin Gegwich and Megan Hickey while third place was awarded to Tara Gosselin, Matthew Lusby and Alex Zhang. Fourth-place honors were granted to Joseph Costa, Caleb Kapen and Andrew Palermo.

Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.
