Selected For Long Island’s Best: Young Artists At Heckscher Museum Northport High School art students Benjamin Herbert and Julianna Curcio have been selected by Heckscher Museum Curator Karli Wurzelbacher and guest juror Melissa Misla to exhibit their artwork at the prestigious Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at Heckscher Museum 2021. Each year, students
in grades nine through 12 are invited to create artwork inspired by pieces currently on display at the museum. Benjamin received a Renzo & Lynette Bianchi Scholarship award for his terracotta sculpture, “Requiem”, which was created under the direction of art teacher Robin O’NeillGonzalez. Julianna’s digital
photograph, “Clairvoyant”, was created under the direction of art teacher John DeRosa, and was selected for an additional exhibition at Mitchells in Huntington. Both pieces are currently on exhibit at the Heckscher Museum until May 23rd, and Julianna’s artwork will be on display at Mitchells from May 25th through June 27th.

collecting food generously donated by our fellow community members. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music
and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for
individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. Interact Club Holds Bike Safety Rodeo For Community
Harborfields High School’s Interact Club held a bike rodeo for middle and elementary school students on April 28. The Bike Rodeo was organized to encourage and teach bike safety to younger students. Due to Covid-19, the club had to find new and creative ways to continue to engage with
the community safely. Members of the Interact Club navigated younger students through safety tactics and an obstacle course. The students received a AAA bike safety certificate upon completion. Additionally, members of the Huntington Bike Club were in attendance to
help fill bike tires with air, correctly fit helmets and give some bike riding tips of their own. “The Bike Rodeo had an amazing turnout,” school media specialist Jill Weiler said. “We couldn’t have been a success without the student volunteers, Key Club, Tri-Fit, AAA and the Huntington Bike Club.”
Greenhouse Is Welcome Addition To Science Program The greenhouse at Northport High School may have only been constructed less than two years ago, but it’s been a much welcome addition to the campus for students interested in using science to better their community and the world. G r e e n h o u s e Coordinator, George Reamy, has expanded opportunities for students in Living Environment classes throughout the Science Department to engage with plant-based science. Biology classes are using the greenhouse to conduct one or more extended lab investigations including the study of nitrate solutions for optimal plant growth and the use of native plants to stem soil erosion. Students currently enrolled in the research program, which spans all grade levels, can use the greenhouse to grow and study plants throughout the year and most importantly control experimental factors to conduct high level plant-based research and scientific investigations.
For freshman Emily Wickard, her desire to study cancer research in the future is the driving force behind her project, which tests the effect of organic compounds used to treat tumors on plants. For fellow freshman Tessa Cote, this is a chance to see if native plants, such as forked blue curl, can help prevent soil erosion due to their stronger root grasp. “It’s very convenient having access to the greenhouse. It’s very different trying to grow plants in a classroom, so having this space makes it a lot easier for us to grow things and work on projects at our own pace,” shared Tessa. For research program coordinators Bryan Horan and Kim Collins, the greenhouse serves as a gateway to connecting students to established research programs and scientists. The scientists will also collaborate and mentor students, advancing plant science techniques including leaf spectroscopy and advanced experimentation. Mr. Horan described the space
as a “living, learning laboratory.” The district is currently exploring these partnerships with Brookhaven National Laboratory. The greenhouse will be getting even more use next year with the introduction of a Long Island Native Ecology and Plant Science course. Students who enroll will be part of a project aimed at turning the area surrounding the greenhouse into a native plant garden and outdoor learning center, where they can gain an understanding of how native plants impact their surroundings and play a crucial role in local ecosystems. Students are currently growing native species in the greenhouse in preparation for the course to begin, under the direction of teacher David LaMagna. Mr. LaMagna shared that he hopes the course will “get students to appreciate and understand what an invasive species is, and why native flora and fauna are so important.” The every-other day, ½ credit course will be available for all grade levels this fall.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association.

Three Northport High School students were honored with awards at Huntington Camera Club’s annual high school competition. The awards highlight the talents of young photographers and their teachers in the Long Island area. First-place winner in
the black & white category was Northport High School senior Bridget Buckmaster, who received an award at the ceremony held at the Huntington Public Library for her image, “Checkmate.” Honorable Mention awards also were given to senior Molly Hoffman
in the Windows & Doors Category for her image, “Broken View,” and junior Michelle Muratore in the Black & White Category for her image “Peering Through.” The students’ artwork was created under the direction of art teacher John DeRosa.
Northport HS DECA Club Students Earn High Honors At State Conference
Northport High School students in DECA, the school’s competitive business club for studying marketing, management, entrepreneurship and economics, attended the virtual State Career Development Conference recently. Students were joined by more than 2,500 competitors from Long Island and New York State, and six Northport High School students earned medals for finishing in the top 10.
Freshman Joe Cipollino finished in the top spot in the role play category and earned third place in the state overall in the Principles of Finance category. Joe qualified to compete at the National Level, which will also be held virtually. All competitors at the state level took a 100-question written exam and are judged in at least one role play event where they solve a case problem.

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD
advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold
compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
