stand that raised $17, which she donated to the Give A Dog A Dream Foundation, the not-forprofit organization the Town formed to raise money earmarked for providing specialized services for the shelter’s dogs. Julia then started a towel and blanket drive at her school, as well as one to get donations of food. Every week for the past year, Julia has brought the donations to the shelter. For her ninth birthday in March, Julia asked her friends and classmates to bring toys, food, blankets or donations instead of birthday gifts. She collected a total of $400 for Give A Dog A Dream at her party. Supervisor Petrone presented Julia with a proclamation thanking her for her efforts and called her an inspiration for everyone.

In the Zone Four Harborfields students were recently honored for demonstrating outstanding leadership qualities in physical education. Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students Nahreal Louis and Caroline Prainto, as well as Oldfield Middle School students Jack Greco and Grace Heil,
were named winners of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Physical Education Leadership Award. To receive this award, the student must possess leadership attributes in their physical education class and be a positive role
model for their classmates. Accompanied by Thomas J. Lahey physical education teacher Michele Turchaino and Oldfield Middle School teacher Bonnie Robertson, the Harborfields students were recognized during an awards ceremony at Longwood High School on May 2nd.

Lighthouse Benefit The best of Broadway comes to Long Island on Wednesday, June 1st, at 8 p.m., as Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway shines at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport. The evening’s special performance of this widely acclaimed musical revue, featuring a cast of Broadway stars accompanied by an all-star New York band, will benefit the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the 104-year old historic landmark. Tickets for the benefit performance are available at two levels: Assistant Lighthouse Keepers ($100 donation) receive reserved seating and a thank you gift. The Lightkeeper level ($500 donation) includes a meet and greet with the cast (no photos/autographs), a cocktail reception (6 to 7:30 p.m.) with open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres,

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now
showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Clean Sweep In an effort to inspire entrepreneurship and creativity, eighth-grade students in Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently participated in the 2016 Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge. In result of their project submissions, five OMS students, respectively, took home first-place awards in three different categories. Under the advisement of family and consumer science teacher Christy Roxo, students developed a product to submit in either the, “It’s Not Easy Being Green,” “Trashy Fashion” and “Masters of Invention” challenge. To enter the “It’s Not Easy Being Green”
competition, students used recycled items to create a repurposed, reusable product. Participants in the “Masters of Inventions” contest developed a concept and prototype along with the price, place and promotion for their invention. To enter the “Trashy Fashion” contest, participants were required to use at least one inorganic and one organic material to create a wearable piece of clothing. Each challenge required students to complete an application and follow the LIFACS four-point scale rubric. Selected from all the middle school student applicants who entered the challenge, OMS students
Samantha DeFranco and Sarah DeFranco, respectively, won the grand prize for their clothing designs in the “Trashy Fashion” challenge, which they made using recycled bed sheets and crushed seashells. Student Evangelea Andreadis was the winner in the “Masters of Inventions” challenge for her “Strep Scanner,” and students Everett Borman and Aidan Dowd, individually, earned the highest honor in the, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” category. Each of the Harborfields first-place winners was awarded a cash prize of $100 for their hard work and creativity.

Countless Ways Thomas J. Lahey Elementary recently hosted a PTA-sponsored Math 24 Game Night where students demonstrated their mathematic abilities and challenged their peers in a fun and educational environment. Leading up to the event, fourth- and fifth-grade students in the Lahey Enrichment Academic Program’s math program volunteered before school, for three Fridays, to assist students in Kathleen Bulfin’s and Nancy Sordi’s third-grade LEAP math classes in playing the Math 24 Game.
Coordinated by LEAP teacher Christine Mayr, more than 100 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students put their mathematic skills to the test as they participated in several rounds of competitive game play. More than 30 Harborfields High School students volunteered their time to act as judges and proctor students as they played. Following the two-hour event, three students from each grade emerged as the Math 24 Game firstplace trophy winners. Congratulations to fifthgrader Caleb Kapen, fourth-
grader Brooke Cheskes and third-grade student Emily Xie for demonstrating outstanding mathematic skills. In addition, medals were distributed to the following students who placed in the top four of their grade. Second place went to Matthew Lusby, Lucy MacInnes and Aidan Smith, while third place was awarded to Matthew Cooke and Samantha Urmaza and Owen Walter. Fourth-place honors were granted to Bridget Hickey, Megan Hickey and Mia McNally.
