Golf Outing Set Education and Programs at Farmingdale State College and Longtime SBPLI Volunteer, will be honored at the event. Dr. Greenwald’s dedication to SBPLI began in 2004, when she was invited to serve as a judge for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, which takes place each April at Hofstra University. After finding herself immediately awed by the incredible energy and enthusiasm of the students, mentors and volunteers, Dr. Greenwald was hooked and opted to even volunteer to judge at the FIRST Robotics Competition Championships. In 2007, she signed on as Judge Advisor for the SBPLI Long Island Regional in 2003 and has assumed that role ever since. Dr. Greenwald is also instrumental in coordinating the annual Fred Breithut Scholarship, which is presented to an

In her dual roles as Dean of International Education and Programs and Senior International Officer at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald is tasked with the internationalization of the campus and with creating a globally competent student body that understands the interconnectedness of technology, applied science, business, culture and society on an international scale. Over the past few years, Dr. Greenwald has been forging longterm partnerships with educational institutions, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in South America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean in an effort to support, negotiate and manage a variety of international programs. In recognition of her work, Dr. Greenwald was presented with the William H. Fulbright International Administrators Award in 2015, which afforded her the opportunity to travel to France to develop bilateral programs of educational exchange between France and the United States. Throughout her nearly 20year tenure at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald has served as Dean of the School of Business, as Chair of the Computer Systems Department and as Professor of Computer Programming and Information Systems. In addition to her role in SBPLI’s FIRST Robotics Competition Development Council, Dr. Greenwald is also a member of AIEA-Association of International Education Administrators. New Playground

Students, faculty members, board trustees and administrators of the Elwood Union Free School District gathered at Harley Avenue Primary School on May 3rd for a special ribbon cutting ceremony to open a new school playground. Donated by the Harley Avenue PTA and the Elwood Booster Club, the playground will serve as a new outdoor space for current students and generations to come. Through the fundraising efforts of both organizations and the support of the district, the playground quickly came to fruition. To kick off the ribbon cutting ceremony, the students sat outside by the playground and sang “It’s a Small World” and the “Harley Spirit Song” under the direction of music teacher Christina Long.
Principal Elissa Millan introduced Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull, Assistant Superintendent of Business Keri Loughlin and board trustees Heather Mammolito, James Tomeo and Deborah Weiss to the students. Dr. Bossert praised the dedication of all those involved in bringing the playground to the school, especially the family members of the PTA. He encouraged students to go home and thank their parents for the school’s new addition. “The people that you have to thank for this new playground are your parents who worked very hard to make it happen,” he said. “Not only will you be able to enjoy it but students that aren’t even

born yet will be able to as well.” Dr. Bossert also acknowledged the PTA executive board for their hard work and dedication. PTA president Heather Ross spoke to the students and thanked PTA member Annemarie Savage for being such a significant part of the process. “We started this goal over a year ago and we are so happy to be here today,” said Mrs. Ross. “It really was a team effort.” The school’s 2016-2017 Harley Knights of the Month had the opportunity to be the first students to try out the playground after the ribbon was cut. These students were selected throughout the year based on their excellent character. The playground was open for students to enjoy during recess that day.

presided over by Queen Mermaid Deborah Harry and King Neptune Chris Stein of Blondie. A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and the official kickoff to summer in New York City. A celebration of the ancient mythology of the summer solstice mixed
with seaside honky-tonk rituals, the Mermaid Parade showcases thousands of diverse and creative marchers cheered on by hundreds of thousands of eager fans. People come from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer season with incredible art,

Importance of Recycling they are not recycled and how throwing valuable resources away can harm the Earth. Important facts were presented and classes learned that it takes 400 to 500 years for a plastic bottle to break down. Representative Audrey Gallo explained what happens to materials when you recycle them and brought explains to show the students. This included presenting a teddy bear and pillow made from
plastic soda bottles. Gallo also walked the classes through the life cycle of paper and how important recycling paper is to the environment. The students were encouraged to use their recycling bins in their classrooms and at the conclusion of the assemblies, they had the opportunity to ask questions about what can or cannot be recycled.

Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Honored for Service Ten Elwood Middle School sixth-graders in troop 85 recently earned the Girl Scout Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 30 service hours in 2016. Members include Giuliana Brown, Kate Doerzbacher, Anya Kassan, Chloe Keil, Riya Kumar, Rachel Leon, Maggie Murphy, Eva Musgrove, Stela Ristic and Arianna Vouthas. Under the guidance of their leaders Allison Keil, Sharon Leon and Jen Musgrove, the troop participated in a project called “Fun for Angela’s House.” Angela’s House is a
non-profit that services children with severe medical disabilities who need 24 hour nursing care. The children live in community homes so that their parents can continue to work and care for their other children at home. The troop took a special interest in Angela’s House and wanted to provide them with specialized play equipment to add more fun to their lives. They raised money by selling Girl Scout cookies and rubber bracelets and initially used the money to buy “star machines” that light up the children’s bedroom ceilings with mesmerizing
lightshows. The troop raised so much money that they were also able to contribute handicapped accommodation swings to a new playground being built on the grounds of one of Angela’s homes. In addition, the girls collected and donated more than 200 slightly used children’s CDs and DVDs that the children of Angela’s House would enjoy. “It feels good to win this award knowing that our hours were spent helping others and making our community a better place,” said Chloe.

Sea Scout Program Everyone has heard of the Boy Scouts, but not everyone has heard of Sea Scouts, the co-ed nautical branch of scouting. Sea Scouts was founded in 1912 by Lord Baden Powell who also founded the Boy Scouts in 1905. He believed that Sea Scouts would “develop character, patriotism, and intelligent discipline – through a sense of duty.” Besides teaching youth such necessities, the Sea Scout program is great for anyone considering a career in the Navy,
Coast Guard, Marine Engineering, Captaining, or any other nautical occupation. The Sea Scouts is also one to consider for any teen ages 14-21 (or age 13 and having completed the 8th grade) who is interested in sailing, being on the water, or getting a leg up on peers in college applications, job resumes, etc. Interestingly enough, like Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts has an “Eagle Scout-like” rank called Quartermaster, which colleges look upon favorably. Boy Scouts First Class rank and above
can work on Eagle and Quartermaster awards simultaneously through the Sea Scouts. Not to mention, for any scout who would like to be involved in both the Sea Scouts and their original troop/crews can do so easily, as you can register for both yet only pay one registration fee. Forty-three Northport High School students were honored on April 25th at the school’s Kids with Character Luncheon. The high school holds the event twice a year to award deserving students with a certificate for showcasing excellent character in school. The students were each nominated by one of their teachers for being a positive member of the school community. The students and several
faculty members gathered in the school’s small cafeteria where pizza was provided. Northport High School Commons Director and art teacher Linda Johansen facilitated the event and thanked the students for their positive contribution to making the school a better place. “You are wonderful students who have stood out for displaying character, whether it be in the form of tolerance, respect,
commitment, teamwork, persistence, selflessness or sportsmanship,” said Johansen. “Congratulations to you all and thank you for having the courage to do the right thing. You do make a difference.” Each student was called up to the podium where they received a certificate and heard the positive recommendation from their teacher on why they deserved to be recognized.

Oldfield Middle School eighth-grader Danielle Barber recently earned first place in the Master of Invention category of the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge for her innovative Footsy Faces prototype. Barber won a grand prize of $100 courtesy of
the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Professionals. Her product, a line of face stickers that are placed in shoes to help children know the difference between the right and left foot, came about when Barber assisted with swim classes at the local YMCA. Barber helped the children put
on their shoes after their lessons and found that the children struggled. “I tried my hardest to make the most unique thing that I could,” she said. “I was going through so many different ideas and this one just stuck out to me. I think it’s important because when I was younger it took me years to figure out which foot to put each shoe on.” Barber created a threeminute video as part of her submission for the contest which showcased her invention and featured her young cousin. She wanted to show a child actually using her creation to demonstrate how it works. Barber’s sister Alissa won the Master of Invention Award three years ago. Building Skills The Northport-East Northport School District’s Department of Reading, Academic Intervention Services and Response to Intervention hosted a Parent University night on May 1st at Pulaski Road Elementary School for family members of students in grades kindergarten through fifth-grade. In an effort to strengthen the home-school connection, the evening featured four different 30 minute literacy workshops. Family members had the
opportunity to attend two sessions that interested them the most. Led by reading AIS teachers throughout the district, topics included how to support your child, reading aloud and sharing your reading life, finding the right books and an overview of intervention programs. Bellerose Avenue Elementary School Principal Lori Beekman also contributed to the conversation by sharing her own experiences
during the reading aloud and sharing your reading life sessions. She spoke to family members about the benefits of reading every day and the importance of making it a daily habit at home. “You are your child’s first teachers,” said Beekman. Those in attendance had the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and learn different strategies that they could use to keep their children engaged in reading.
