The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team returns for their 15thappearance at their hometown air show at Jones Beach. The team has prepared a new demonstration that will be performed during Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beachon May 26th27th. The 15thannual event will be hosted at Jones Beach State Park, which is one of the largest events for the NY State Parks Department. The homecoming show will be the sixth stop for the 2018 air show season for the squadron of World War IIera aircraft. The GEICO Skytypers fly six SNJs powered by 600-horsepower Pratt and Whitney engines. As WWII training aircraft, the SNJs were designed to perform all the maneuvers of fighter planes from the same era, but at slower speeds. “The SNJs flown by our team were originally used as training aircraft for WWII pilots,” says Long Island resident and Team Flight Lead Larry Arken. “We consider it an honor to demonstrate the amazing abilities of these vintage warbirds on behalf of our sponsor, GEICO, while sharing some rarely seen aviation history with air show crowds. Now more than 75 years old, the SNJ-2 is a testament to the engineering genius of the Greatest Generation. These aircraft are a dream to fly.” A majority of the team’s low-level flying demonstration takes place in front of the crowd. The historic roar of the vintage engines fills the air as the team demonstrates more than 20 different period-specific tactical maneuvers during its 18-minute performance. “We are excited to reveal a new routine to our supporters for the 2018 Air Show Season,” said Lead

I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged
and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate
aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

STEM Scholarship Northport High School junior William Doyle has been named a 2018 Rensselaer Medalist for his academic achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
This award includes a $25,000 merit scholarship each year for four years of study for each medalist who is accepted and enrolls at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which William plans on attending after
graduating. The Rensselaer Medal, which has existed since 1916, is presented to outstanding students who have distinguished themselves in the disciplines of STEM.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school
drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Another Organization YOU Can Become Involved With . . . Girls on the Run ~ Long Island
www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. On April 18th, Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington)’s Bear Den hosted a carnival event at Oakwood Primary School welcoming girls to join the Pack and the Boy Scouting experiences. The evening started with the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Councilwoman Joan Cergol, representing the
Town of Huntington. Cub Scout Pack 66 was assisted by Co-Ed Venturing Crew 2011 and Alumni of Pack 66 from Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington) and Troop 34 (Huntington Station) also were there to help at the Pack 66 event. Each member in the 9 year-old scout’s Bear Den had to think of a game they wanted to do by
themselves. The youth had to bring in the materials and make his own sign and help the younger scouts at each event. The games included a marshmallow eating contest, a football toss, claw machine (with candy for the winners), learning how to do the magic of “spinning plates”, a photo booth station, as well as baseball, bowling, bean bag toss, basketball games and an opportunity to learn about live reptiles (turtles, frogs and a garden snake - all courtesy of the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery). Said Cathy Braithwaite, Cub Scout Pack 66 (South Huntington)’s Den 5 Den Leader, “There was also a ‘Hungry Hippo’ handson game, which all of the youths loved. We are happy to have recruited about a dozen new scouts, including three girls, and are excited about having them join us on a new journey in Cub Scouts.”

The Thunder of One Hand Clapping This column completes a trilogy, the first being The Art and Pleasure of Meditation, followed by The Power of Zen. What you are about to read is a rare glimpse into a segment of advanced Zen dynamics. For many years, I’ve heard from Zen Masters on this subject; many Zen followers try to obtain it, with varying degrees of success. I am certain that, after digesting this story, some readers may be dubious and doubt the validity of the episode. I don’t blame them. How can you possibly hear any sort of noise (much less thunder) using only one hand? One thing is certain. The story you are about to read is true. How do I know? Because I was the one it happened to. Background: I was in London on an extended two-week business trip. As a frequent visitor to the city, I always preferred to stay in a small English hotel, charming and secluded, with a warm, laid-back atmosphere. Of particular interest to me was their private garden in the rear of the hotel. Immediately upon entering, you felt very comfortable. It had two small
benches, and the entire area was heavily landscaped with bushes and trees. My favorite routine (after a day at the office) was to have dinner, then quickly retreat into this garden. It took only a few moments before one relaxed and felt very much at ease. The Episode: Several weeks prior to this visit, I had become fascinated with the idea of engaging in the “thunder of one hand clapping,” and constantly thought of it during meditation. Nothing much happened until my first night in the hotel garden, which I believed was the perfect setting to attempt it. Try as I might, for the third night in a row, but nothing happened. On the fourth day, I felt strangely different and could not wait to enter my “private garden” that night. I once again began the process and, after a while, felt a strange tingling in my left arm. I continued meditating; my whole body began to feel very warm. I’m not sure of the exact sequence, but I remember raising my right arm and placing it in front of my chest. The next thing that happened is
difficult to explain, except I heard a very loud rumbling sound in the garden, followed by complete silence. I looked up to see that the sky was completely clear. How could that be? I felt exhausted, but soon noticed that I was drenched in sweat; both palms of my hands were hot, and a deep red color. Truly, I had to remain seated on the bench for a moment before I had the strength to get up. After that, I went directly to my room and had one of the best night’s sleep I had ever experienced. Aftermath: I can’t explain what happened that night. Was it my subconscious turning thoughts into action? Was it all my imagination? If so, why the tingling and strange feelings beforehand, and the deep red color of both palms afterward? {By the way, I have never tried this again.} A final thought... Before forming an opinion, just think of all the mysteries in this world that we know exist, yet cannot explain. Could this be one of them? You be the judge. Peace.

Sophomore business student Katerina Wettengel traveled to Atlanta, Georgia during the last week in April to compete in the DECA
third overall in the Human Resource Management category on the state level in Rochester. DECA is a business club for students who are interested in learning and practicing marketing, management, entrepreneurship and economics. All competing students took a 100-question written exam and were judged in at least one role-play casesolving event. Eighteen thousand high school students, advisers, alumni and business partners gathered at the Georgia World Congress Center for International Business this international event. Competition. Tide Mill Tours The price is $15 for members; $20 for nonmembers. The mill was built in 1795 and is the only surviving mill in Huntington. This historic site provided a way for farmers to transform their oats, wheat and corn into flour, which made the mill an important part of the local agricultural past. In addition, it is one of the best-preserved 18th century tide mills in the country. This is a unique and enjoyable way to

HONORED FOR RESCUE - The Melville Fire Department recognized Third Assistant Chief Jason Bernfeld for his lifesaving efforts in rescuing a man from his overturned car moments before it burst into flames on the Northern State Parkway on March 12th, 2018.
