As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even offi cially underway yet, but Perserverance In the realm of ideas, the signs are everywhere. everything depends Concert schedules are out, on enthusiasm; in the vacations are being planned, real world, all rests on baseball is in full swing – perseverance. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

Adults served by DDI will be partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts to produce Dancing for Autism 2, Broadway Nights at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $7 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. There will also be a special advance ticket package for $25 that will include special seating, a commemorative DVD of last year’s event, candy and custom event program. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside. The dance program originated with Melissa Espinal and Evens Bourisquot. Melissa is not only a student at the

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined members of Troop 34 for the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Zachary Cammer. Cammer earned
his Eagle Scout badge on January 31st of this year and serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster. “Zachary’s hard work and dedication has culminated in his Eagle Scout and this ceremony was a chance to honor his good deeds and service to the community,” said Lupinacci. “Even after making his Eagle Scout, Zachary continues to serve as a leader among the young men of Troop
34 and is an outstanding resource for the troop. It was an honor to take part in this important event in Zachary’s life and share the experience with his troop mates and family and I applaud his achievement.” During his time in the Boy Scouts, Cammer earned 32 merit badges, including Citizenship in the Community, Engineering and Wilderness Survival.

The Elwood Union Free School District would like to congratulate Elwood Middle School eighthgrader Sarah Weitman on being selected “Best In Grade” in the Town of Huntington’s 13th annual Huntington in Bloom art contest for her
respective age group. Only three winners from each grade level were selected throughout the Town of Huntington. “I chose to portray a butterfly because it allowed me to make my work more colorful and textured,” explained Sarah.

On Friday, Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci joined staff and students from the South Huntington UFSD to commemorate Silas Wood’s designation as the first Middle School Career Academy. The middle school focuses on education in STEM - science, technology, engineering and math, and was celebrating its
co-educational and are open to children from ages 5-19. In 2007, Legislator Stern sponsored legislation marking April as Autism Awareness Month in Suffolk County to help raise awareness and educate our community about Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities which affect as many as 1 in 88 children. These programs not only provide young people with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of athletic events, they also provide support for their families. “I am pleased to join with Nassau and Suffolk PAL and most importantly with our
children with special needs and their families to help inform our community about the programs available to them,” Legislator Stern said. Special thanks to Det. Lt. Kindergarten students of Harley Avenue Primary School combined their study of animals and the five senses as they enjoyed a special classroom visit from Eric Young of the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. Mr. Young brought along a variety of animal
Second-grade student Sophie Crowley of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District recently had the privilege of assuming responsibilities for Interim Principal Lynn Burke during Principal For The Day.
Sophie spent the day with Ms. Burke, assisting her with important tasks such as making the morning announcements, reading a book on school manners to a kindergarten class and presenting an assembly on school conduct to all of the first- and second-graders.
“It was fun to walk around with Ms. Burke and do important things like read paperwork,” remarked the enthusiastic secondgrader. “I think I would like to be a teacher or a principal when I get older, so this was good practice.”
Permanent Exhibit To Open Northport Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of its new permanent exhibit, Our Stories: The History Of A Community, on Sunday, May 19th. A special reception celebrating the unveiling of the new display will begin at 3 p.m. This exhibit transforms half of the Society’s gallery space into a timeline, tracing the history of the Northport-East Northport community, beginning with the Native Americans that first settled here. Rather than concentrating on dates and events, however, the focus will be on the stories of selected
men and women who called our area home, the way they lived, and their continuing impact on the physical, cultural and societal landscape of the community. It will feature all new displays and rarely seen photos and artifacts from the Society’s Collection. “This exhibit marks a change for the Society’s museum,” explains Director Heather Johnson. “Our exhibits committee and designer have outdone themselves putting together something that looks unlike anything we’ve ever done before. We have all learned so much
about our history during this process, and we think the community will learn something new, as well.” Northport Historical Society’s Museum is located at 215 Main Street, Northport and is open to the public Tuesday – Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Additional information about the exhibition and the Society can be found at www.northporthistorical. org, or by calling the Northport Historical Society at 631.757.9859.
