All programming takes place digitally so that individual families can remain in the privacy of their own homes while staying connected with Woodloch’s energetic staffers as well as each other. On March 21, The Woodloch Family gave each of its 950 hourly team members an additional week’s worth of wages to compensate them during the first week of shutdown from March 16 – 22. The Woodloch Family hosted two separate food drives, one on March 26 and the other on April 10, where they distributed over 800 care packages to staff members. These included an assortment of items such as pasta, meat, milk, eggs, juice, canned goods, toilet paper, baked goods from the resort’s in-house bakery as well as salad greens and herb bundles from the organic farm at Woodloch’s destination spa. An additional 300 packages were donated to local Pike and Wayne County food shelters. Woodloch donated all of its available N95 respirator masks to the local community hospital, Wayne Memorial. Additionally, Woodloch’s bakery distributed care packages to hospital staff, local urgent care, and local EMS on Friday, April 17. Woodloch owns and
operates a stand-alone restaurant, The Boat House, in downtown Hawley, PA, and they have been providing a free weekly meal to Pennsylvania State Police from the nearby Blooming Grove station. As part of its new program, “Goodwill Fridays,” the family resort will host charitable acts in the community every Friday during the crisis and beyond. On May 1st, Woodloch supplied four of their local volunteer fire departments with of an assortment of homemade baked goods. “Our tagline, ‘Together is the best place to be,’ has never rang more true. We are a family here at Woodloch, and that sentiment extends not only to our staff but also to our community. When bad things happen, we want to do everything we can to offer a helping hand,” said Brad Kiesendahl, C.E.O. of Woodloch Pines. “We extend our immense thanks to all of the frontline workers out there who are working tirelessly to combat this crisis. The Covid-19 crisis has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard, and Woodloch Pines, an all-inclusive family resort located in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, is no exception. The property closed its doors back in mid-March with hopes to reopen on May 22, but with much still unknown, Woodloch refused to simply stand by and wait. Having been in business for 62 years, the Poconos resort has emerged triumphant from its fair share of challenges, never shying away from difficult times and always working to turn negatives into positives. Family-owned and operated since 1958, Woodloch’s core mission is built upon treating guests and staff like “company in our homes.” Although the property remains shuttered, it has been working hard to maintain the Woodloch spirit for guests, staff and the entire community in an effort to spread light in a time of darkness. Initiatives include the following: The launch of Woodloch at Home, a treasure trove of activities and games that can be accessed remotely through both the resort’s website and social media channels. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. Recently they received a phone call from the Public Safety at Eisenhower Park, who mentioned that a cat had been stuck in a tree for at least five days and no one was able to get it down. Soon after, the Guardians arrived and climbed over 75 feet to successfully bring the cat down to safety. They not only rescued the cat, but they are now continuing to take care of her the best they can. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the

JGHS Student Rithika Narayan Places First In LISEF Just prior to school closings, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student Rithika Narayan placed first in the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair. Her project, titled “Coral Grief: Machine Learning on Crowd-sourced Data to Highlight an Ecological Crisis,” highlighted the precarious health of coral reefs around the world, which are in danger of bleaching and disease due to climate change. In just five months, Rithika developed a machine learning algorithm that identifies healthy, bleached or diseased coral in images taken by underwater autonomous vehicles, researchers, or even amateur divers. The efficiency of this algorithm in analyzing thousands of images makes it a viable technology for use in global databases on coral reef health, government archives or citizen science projects. “I hope to empower the public to be able to contribute to conservation
efforts by simply taking pictures of the corals they might see on vacation,” Rithika said. Her research was entered into the Earth and Environmental Sciences category at LISEF, where she won first place in the category. She, along with other first place winners
from various categories, were selected to advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May to represent Long Island among student researchers from all over the world. Unfortunately, due to the spread of COVID-19, she was unable to do so.
Additionally, Rithika entered her work in the Environmental Science category at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, where she took first place in the category and third place overall for the Long Island Region. Congratulations Rithika Narayan!

How To Clean When Faced With A Shortage Of Supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because
they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl
(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective
at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks.

Northport-East Northport administrators are making monetary donations to cater meals to Huntington Hospital’s essential workers. The team connected with Northport High School alumnus, Emily Kenney, who is a first-year nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit. “We will be continuing this effort (until our money runs out) as we not only are lifting the spirits of the medical professionals on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19, but also supporting our local restaurants who are preparing the food,” Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Irene McLaughlin said. “It’s just a small token of our appreciation for the heroes providing care to the ill and our understanding of the economic crunch this situation is placing on our small, local businesses.”

A night of al fresco dining next to a grill in the backyard can be a great way to spend an evening. Nearly any type of food can be grilled, and steaks tend to be especially good when cooked over an open flame. The following recipe for “Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simple Scratch” (Avery) is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for “Baked Beans,” a must-have staple for any backyard barbecue. Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter Serves 4 to 6 8
Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool. In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled mushroom mixture until combined. Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log. Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to
bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper. Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving. Baked Beans Serves 10 15-ounce cans navy beans, drained and rinsed 4 slices applewood- or pecan wood-smoked bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 cup diced yellow onion 11⁄2 cups ketchup 1⁄4 cup + 2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses 1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 11⁄4 teaspoons ground mustard 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon kosher salt
