Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

Professional Of The Year The Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that Harborfields teaching assistant Annie McClintock was recently named 2015 New York State United Teacher’s School Related Professional (SPR) of the Year. Since 2000, McClintock has worked as a 1:1 special education teacher assistant in each of the district’s four school buildings. Teaching assistants are K-12 certified by New York State and must be able to work with a unique and diverse

A Harborfields resident since 1960 and a former Harborfields High School graduate, McClintock has been an active member of the community, a role model to her colleagues and has contributed to the success of numerous

Accompanied by her family, McClintock will be honored at a recognition ceremony in May and will be acknowledged by the Harborfields Board of Education at their monthly meeting in April. “As a teaching assistant I have the opportunity to provide support to our students who will one day be productive, civicminded members of our communities, and for this I am blessed and honored to be recognized as SRP of the Year,” said McClintock.
Linguistic Success language exams. This year, 140 schools in more than 20 states participated in the five levels of the national AATI exam with the top scores and honorable mention awarded with monetary prizes. From more than 1,800 who took the AATI Level III exam, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School 10thgrade student Michael Hermanns received first place and and an award of $250 dollars. Competing in Level I, Elwood Middle School eighth-grade students Ivan Andrade and Drew Kuroda received $250 for first place, Emily Amir, Christian Bacelic, Mario Georgiou and
Michael Gastello received $200 for second place and Makenzy Chaikin received $50 for fifth place. The following middle and high school students were selected for AATI National Honorable Mention: Karen Avila, Cassidy Evans, Allison Flanagan, Ilissa Pipia, Joseph Salerno, Giovanni Rinaldi and Samantha Rivera. In addition, four students received gold medal certificates in the Level I AATSP national exam. Students Keen Clinton, Jaida Morgan, Meghan Rivardo and Caleb Shim scored a 95 or above on the exam.

YOUNG DESIGNER - An 8 year-old budding fashion designer from East Northport, whose creations were displayed at New York City Fashion Week in February, received special recognition from Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and the Town Board at its May 5th meeting. Lia Edlin Miller, a student at Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, started modeling at age seven and, inspired by watching the television show “Project Runway,” began taking sewing lessons and participated in a young designer’s competition that involved creating pieces for New Jersey Fashion Week incorporating Crayola crayon wrappers. That led to an invitation to participate in a children’s showcase at New York Fashion Week, where she has modeled three times previously.

The 7- to 10-year-olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 81 Tigers, Cubs and Webelos and their cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received a commemorative patch. Taking second place were the students from Richmond Hill High School and students from Syosset High School were in third place. The winner received $3,000 for their school with the second and third place winners
getting $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. The health system is a big proponent of educating local children about careers in healthcare. North Shore-LIJ is a co-steward, along with Brookhaven National Laboratory, of the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Hub and has helped foster several healthcare career academies on Long Island and in New York City schools. A team of nearly a dozen students from Walt Whitman High School in Huntington won the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s first Spark! video contest for their work featuring the students’ experience at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park last fall and the subsequent Hospital for a Day program they created for students in the South Huntington School District. The Spark! Challenge involved approximately 30 teams of North Shore-LIJ staff members from across the health system hosting students at their facilities and giving them a glimpse into their jobs. WWII Weekend The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage becomes an embattled European countryside of 1945 during the weekend of May 17th and 18th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as World War II armor advances down country lanes and living historians maneuver across open fields before thousands of visitors during the 70th
anniversary of the end of that epic conflict. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active duty military personnel with I.D. are admitted for free. Presentations will include tactical military exercises, displays of period weapons and an armor parade that includes a Sherman tank, armored cars and halftracks.
A memorial service will be held at Noon on both Saturday and Sunday to honor all American servicemen and women who have given their lives in the defense of freedom. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano stated, “The ability to create an armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II is one of the most compelling educational tools we have
to recount the story of our G.I.s’ courage, valor and sacrifice. Place it in this setting of vintage farmhouses and country roads so reminiscent of the WWII era European countryside, and you have created a virtual time machine that creates indelible memories for visitors who begin to appreciate the heroes in their own families.” The WWII Encampment is unique in New York
and brings scores of living historians together to demonstrate tactics, coupled with an operational armor collection unseen in the northeast. World War II weekend is made possible through the cooperation of the Office of Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, the Nassau County Department of Parks and Recreation, Long Island Living History Association, Stop and Shop Supermarkets,
United Water, the law firm of Rosenberg, Calica & Birney, Polimeni International, PSE&G, and the Museum of American Armor.
