Each one act play will be performed for an audience during the festival alongside two additional plays from neighboring districts. “It’s such an amazing experience to have the chance to be behind the scenes. Not on the stage, but to be a part of the writing process. I do theatre and love performing in shows, but it’s so much fun to take part in the other side of it,” said Ella. Harrison didn’t previously have theater experience, but does have significant writing and English experience and hopes to become an English teacher one day. Ella plans to study English or creative writing and possibly minor in theatre. Tickets are free and can be picked up in-person at the Engeman Theater box office.

Northport High School senior Harrison LeBow and junior Ella Piscatello’s one act plays have been selected for the Young Playwright’s Festival at the John W. Engeman Theater on May 24. The festival, which will be presented by the Northport Arts Coalition in partnership with the theater, invited students to submit one act plays for consideration. Those plays selected, including Harrison and Ella’s, will be produced and performed by theater actors during the festival. Harrison and Ella will work with the professional directors on edits and rewrites to their scripts and have a say in the overall production and creative process. According to the Northport Arts Coalition, the students will “be a part of the entire process of staging a play, from auditions to

First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country. For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide. The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on. As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011. If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that

you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt. Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. Five Creative Visions Fine Art Exhibition At Mills Pond Gallery Through May 13, 2022 Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to present Five Creative Visions through May 13 at Mills Pond Gallery. This exhibit features five artists, each sharing their creative voice through a different medium (acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor and photography) Bellmore artist David P. Doran is a light film photographer using both 35mm and roll film cameras. He is a former member of the Camera Club of New York. This exhibit focuses on street photography influenced by Gary Winogrand (19281984). Most were taken in New York City, the capital of this genre. In recent years, street photography has been looked upon in some corners as somewhat shopworn. David adamantly disagrees stating, “The street is a river of life and such

photos are to be considered as part of the tradition of social documentary photography.” Mt. Sinai artist Terence McManus has always been fascinated by the human face. A retired social worker with a Master’s degree from Adelphi University, Terence always found time for drawing. From a young age, he drew obsessively. Once his children were grown, he painted daily, participated in art groups and devoured art magazines, always perfecting his portraiture. Primarily a self-taught artist, Terence’s art has been exhibited in hundreds of exhibitions in the New York metropolitan area, winning more than sixty awards in prestigious shows including The Butler Institute of American Art and The

Suffolk County Legislators Manuel Esteban and Stephanie Bontempi recently presented a proclamation to Elizabeth Wayland-Morgan, Executive Director of the Vanderbilt Museum in honor of the Hall of Fishes marine museum and its 100th Anniversary. In 1910, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased 43 acres of waterfront land in Centerport and called it his Eagle’s Nest estate. In 1922, Mr. Vanderbilt built a marine museum, the first stage of his larger museum complex. Mr. Vanderbilt traveled the world to collect thousands of specimens, including fish, insects, invertebrates, birds and wild animals, along with cultural artifacts from Africa and the Pacific. The museum has the largest collection of

privately assembled marine specimens from the pre atomic era. “My family and I have spent time at the Vanderbilt Museum and we enjoyed our visit. It is a beautiful estate, and offers so much history, in addition to being a wonderful educational facility. We are lucky to have this gem in our backyard,” said Legislator Esteban. “As a parent and former teacher, I appreciate everything that the Vanderbilt Museum has to offer. Students Enjoy Phone-Free Retreat

A tradition for Northport High School International Baccalaureate seniors has returned with the annual weekend retreat at Frost Valley YMCA in the Catskill Mountains. The trip, which seniors have been enjoying for over a decade, brings students together through bonding activities and a phone-free environment. With no WiFi, students were able to use their

phones for photos but not for phone calls or internet service. The reprieve from technology was part of the experience, and IB Coordinator Anna Kessler felt it was “why the retreat was successful in solidifying the bond between us all.” Throughout the weekend, students participated in activities including hiking, zip-lining, archery, candle making and simple

structure design challenges. These simple activities encouraged students to apply their knowledge of the arts, physics and more. According to their website, Frost Valley YMCA is a “camp, retreat destination, & Environmental Education Center offering people of all ages and abilities enriching, even life-altering, outdoor experiences.”

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

These courses consist of activities and Bible studies designed to help the Scout become more aware of God’s presence in his daily life, especially within the home and community. By completing the requirements, the Scout has strengthened their spiritual growth and religious knowledge. The Electrical Safety Foundation International, a nonproﬁt organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety, recommends that homeowners leave electrical work to the professionals. Licensed electricians are well-trained, whereas homeowners may not be skilled enough to avoid accidents or injuries, which can prove fatal when working with electricity. Homeowners who take the do-it-yourself route with electrical work should consider these safety tips, courtesy of the ESFI, before beginning a home electrical project. • Learn your home electrical system. Home electrical systems may include power lines, electric meters, service panels, subpanels, wiring, and more. These systems are complex, and homeowners who intend to do some DIY electrical work should familiarize themselves with their home electrical systems prior to beginning any work. The ESFI notes that knowledge of their home electrical systems can help homeowners more safely navigate them and make maintenance easier.

• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns. Each of these injuries is significant. For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project. • Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel. Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them. • Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work. The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects. Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

The event acknowledged honorees Dale Cole, Newsday/ Newsday Charities, and Brian Rooney, Mutual of America as well as the retirement of founding board member, Michael McClain. Two-hundred people attended the event, which raised over $75,000 for Options’ programs which help vulnerable Long Islanders live independently in the community. Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO at Options for Community Living, Inc. introduced the evening by acknowledging the challenges of the last two years and recognizing Options employees for their commitment to the mission. “It has been my privilege, particularly these last two years, to lead and be part of the most caring, compassionate, and strong group of individuals that we call Team Options. Over 200 strong, our team worked tirelessly to ensure the safety, dignity, and care of more than 2,400 men, women, and children across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” remarked Ms. Robano-Gross. PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Dig A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas. Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig. Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and ﬁnes. “Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.” According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a Patchoguebased non-profit organization that promotes selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services. As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage. Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February. It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

Counselors can explain how homeowners can work with lenders or agencies on forbearance plans or loan modifications. Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule. Suffolk County Legislature Minority Leader Jason Richberg, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have announced the second annual Suffolk County Youth Week will be held from May 16 through May 21. As part of the annual weeklong celebration, several events have been planned to honor, mentor and celebrate young people in Suffolk County. Suffolk County Youth Week is the result of legislation sponsored by Legislator Richberg and approved by the county legislature to designate the third week of May as “Youth Week” starting in 2021. A collaboration among the Suffolk County Legislature, Suffolk County Executive Bellone, the Suffolk County Youth Bureau, and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, the goal of Youth Week is to recognize children between the ages of 9 and 12 as well as teenagers and celebrate their active participation in our communities. “I want to thank all of our partners and supporters who helped bring our second annual Youth Week to fruition,” said Legislator Richberg. “Youth Week is about celebrating our next generation of leaders, encouraging them to stay on the path of helping others, and giving young people more opportunities to get involved. We hope to keep this a tradition in Suffolk County for many years to come.” Suffolk County Youth Week will kick off on Monday, May 16 with the Second Annual Suffolk County Youth Awards, a celebration of young people from across the county.
