The youths earned the Aviation Merit Badge, which can be used during their quest to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Their Merit Badge councilor and Cradle of Aviation Docent, Tim VanWickler, is an Eagle Scout.

Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to
complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it
goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Students tried their hand at creating an original Aboriginal dot painting by using five earth-tone paint colors, a twig and

Pathway to Politics students Gabrielle Abrams, Tytiana Christmas, Grace Franzese and Katherine McVetty met with nine female elected officials from Suffolk County Huntington Township. They interviewed the elected officials to ask about their education, experiences, the campaign process and their day-today responsibilities. The high school students were challenged with the task of creating “virtual candidates” by developing
various campaign materials including a speech, slogan, campaign button and bumper sticker. Each table presented their campaign to the entire group. “Each of the girls expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to meet the elected officials and consider public service in some form as a career goal,” said Kennedy.

Poetry Winners Recognized The Huntington Town Board recently recognized 17 teen poets from the community selected for participation in the Town’s Poetry for the HART Public Art Initiative, presenting the winners with certificates signed by members of the Huntington Town Board in an award ceremony presided over by Councilwoman Susan A. Berland at the Walt Whitman Birthplace. Immediately following the April 21st award ceremony was a poetry reading led by poets Patti Tana and Steven Licardi (two of the jurors who selected the winning poems) and featured poet Alan Semerdjian, at which the teen poets selected for the program had an opportunity to read their winning poems. A brief reception followed the reading. developed by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee in conjunction with Teenspeak, Co-Lead Agency, who suggested the project to the Town. Teens in the community from ages 14-18 were invited last fall to submit poems for consideration in the program. A selection panel comprised of the poets Patti Tana, and Steven Licardi, joined by Jim Metcalfe, a member of the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee, were charged with reviewing the 147 different submissions from 113 different teen poets and narrowing the choices to the 18 winning poems by 17 different teen poets. Additional partners in this project include Heckscher Museum of Art; Huntington Arts Council; The Long Islander, which has pledged to publish the winning poems; REACH CYA; Town of Huntington Youth Bureau; Tri-Community Youth Agency; the award reception host – Walt Whitman Birthplace Association; and Youth Directions & Alternatives CYA, as well as numerous area teachers who actively encouraged their students’ participation. Colorful placards, each bearing a winning poem, will soon be placed in the interior advertising spaces on buses throughout the HART system.
