An Audience of One
The Town of Huntington’s Conservation Board has scheduled its semi-annual meeting with park stewards for May 16th, focusing on the topic, “Threats to Trees – What Can Be Done?” The meeting, which is open to the public, will include presentations by experts and discussion on topics including historic threats to Town trees, the Town’s Tree City USA recognition, oak wilt fungus, the Southern Pine Beetle and the Asian Long Horned Beetle. The Conservation Board holds two park stewardship meetings each year, one in the spring and the other fall, choosing topics it believes will be interesting and useful to park stewards and relevant to parks in the Town. The Conservation Board coordinates the Park Steward program, in which designated residents help the Town in monitoring and managing parkland. Park Stewards are recommended to the Town Board for appointment by the Conservation Board and serve as volunteers who act as the “eyes” and

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone delivered welcoming remarks April 27th at the opening session of the BOOM Business Network’s B2B Expo and Executive Speaker Conference, held at the Hilton Long Island here. In addressing the group, Supervisor Petrone highlighted the most unusual feature of the expo: linking attendance at the conference’s nine breakout conferences to individual Long Island charities, with the admission fee for
each session going directly to that not-for-profit. Those organizations, Supervisor Petrone said, are “the safety net for our community that picks up where government leaves off.” The Supervisor also noted that businesses can increase their success by linking to organizations that serve the community. Supervisor Petrone congratulated BOOM’s founder and president, Commack attorney Frank Gargano, for creating an event that attracted more

than 2,000 people and a networking group whose membership ranks are growing. Following the Supervisor, greenings were also presented by State Sens. Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most
of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern awarded a Proclamation to Jackie Lukas, in recognition of her selection as the honoree for Outstanding Community Service at the East Northport Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual “Taste of Long Island” Gala.
The event was sponsored by Dr. Raymond Mascolo, DDS and Dr. Thomas Mascolo, DMD. Jackie Lukas is News 12 Long Island’s weekend anchor and general assignment reporter who joined News12 in 2006. She received an Emmy

Third-graders in Noreen Paccione’s class focused on the importance of saving trees and participated in a hand-on activity of making paper out of recycled magazines and nomination for reporting newspapers. Harley Avenue Primary School students, families and faculty members gathered for a Read-aThon fundraiser in honor of former teacher Barbara Quigley on April 21st. With the support of the PTA, the school raised $1,700 in only an hour and a half towards the Barbara Quigley Scholarship Fund. Throughout the week, the school celebrated National Book Week and the theme carried over to the fundraiser, where Harley Avenue teachers read to children throughout the building.
Mrs. Quigley, a teacher in the district for 38 years, passed away last summer and was known for her love of Dr. Seuss. The school decided to highlight this in honor of her memory, with faculty members donating different books, including those of Dr. Seuss, to be raffled off. Families paid a dollar per raffle ticket and winners were selected over the morning announcements on the following school day. Families were encouraged to give a donation upon arrival and had the opportunity
to enjoy snacks and refreshments. Retired teachers and even Harley Avenue’s former principal, volunteered at the raffle tables to support their beloved friend who is deeply missed by the Elwood community. “Barbara Quigley has been a staple in the EARTH DAY FUN - Students in Noreen Paccione’s class got their hands dirty while Elwood community for making paper. Volt all-electric car to show the students in honor of Earth Day. Before the visit, students researched the Volt on their Chromebooks and prepared questions to ask about the car. Students learned that the Volt has a range of over 200 miles on a single charge. They had the opportunity to sit in the car and also watch Kraham take the car for a ride around the parking lot.

Top Cops Honored Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently joined Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini, members of the Suffolk County Police Department and members from other law enforcement agencies in Suffolk County to honor this year’s “Top Cops” for making the most arrests of drivers who were ability impaired by drugs or alcohol in 2016.
DWI arrests last year totaled more than 4,600 in the police district and the County’s east end towns and villages. This year’s ‘Top Cops’ were: First Precinct Officer Weldon Drayton; Second Precinct Officer Joshua Parsons; Third Precinct Officer John Mercurio; Fourth Precinct Officer Douglas Nassisi; Fifth Precinct Officer Timothy Vicinanza; Sixth Precinct
Officer Michael Malerba; Seventh Precinct Officer Brian Koch; SAFE-Team Officer Zacarias Alverado; and Highway Patrol Officer Roger Kleber, who had the most DWI/DWAI arrests in all of Suffolk County. Officer Nassisi also received the “Distinguished Recognition Award” for leading his precinct in DWI arrests for the 20th year in a row.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope (KROH) that will allow the program to expand its services for bilingual social work/ patient navigation at local hospitals. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, Inc., established in 2013, provides financial assistance to women who otherwise would not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer. These women die at twice the rate of those who can afford medical attention. Currently bilingual social workers/patient navigators from the Adelphi Program meet with patients immediately following their breast
cancer diagnosis at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). These staff members provide on-going support and follow patients through diagnosis and treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and reconstruction. The program at NUMC addresses disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients with breast cancer. The funds received from KROH have enabled the breast cancer program to hire a second parttime bilingual social worker/patient navigator. Additionally, in June, the program will begin Spanish
language support groups at community centers for patients and their families. “Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is very proud to continue our collaboration with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program by funding an additional patient navigator to help serve the many women and men in the community facing breast cancer,” says Despina Yarian, cofounder and chair of KROH. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information to people coping with cancer. OPENING CELEBRATION - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland attended the opening celebration for Eva Casale who for the second straight year is running seven marathons in seven days on Long Island to raise money for veterans. The event was held at the Huntington Elks Lodge with their Exalted Ruler Alyssa Nightingale, Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards, CEO of Suffolk Federal Credit Union Ralph D. Spencer, Jr. and Chairman of the Board of SFCU Jim Maggio.
Paw-sitive Experience where students learned how to draw a dog. Moby, with his owner and dog trainer Lance Motkin sat with students and Motkin answered questions that the students had. One of the stations was reading to Moby. Each student had the opportunity to pick a book and sit next to Moby on the carpet where they read him a story. The objective of the visit was to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere that allowed students to practice their
reading skills. “Most children just seem to naturally love animals, especially dogs,” said Gutheil. “Research has shown that these types of activities provide positive motivation to children as they sit by, read to and pet a calm and gentle dog.” At the conclusion of the afternoon, the students sang a song that they wrote for Moby as a thank you that went along to the tune of “Bingo Was His Name-O.”
Walking for a Wish
Students, families and faculty members took part in their 11th annual Walk for a Wish fundraising event on April 22nd to raise money for 13 yearold Alexa from Deer Park, who has a neuromuscular disorder. The district raised $14,087 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation and grant Alexa’s wish to travel to Greece this July. Washington Drive Primary School’s Act of Kindness Committee, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School Walk for a Wish Committee and both schools’ PTA’s helped organize the event. Finding her love of Greek mythology at a young
age, Alexa thanked the Harborfields community for their support in helping her dream of going to Athens come true. She greeted the crowd with representatives from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. “Most of the time the children who are granted these wishes are confined to a lot of doctor visits and hospital stays,” said Make-A-Wish Community Relations Manager Kellie Ryan. “By giving them the opportunity to have a wish granted you help reopen their imaginations and give them something positive to focus on.” The rain did not keep
supporters away as many community members came out to walk the track at Harborfields High School for Alexa. Members of the high school concert choir kicked off the walk with a performance of the National Anthem and members of the high school jazz band led the first lap around the field while community members followed. Throughout the event, the PTA sold pedometers and wristbands with proceeds going towards the cause and stories were shared over the loud speaker about how students throughout the district raised money.

Poetry for the HART The Huntington Town Board recently recognized 16 teen poets from the community selected for participation in the Town’s Poetry for the HART Public Art Initiative, with the winners receiving certificates signed by members of the Huntington Town Board in an April 26th award ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace. Immediately following conclusion of the award ceremony was a poetry reading led by featured poet Steven Licardi, with additional contributions by poets Kate Kelly and John A. Brennan (two of the four jurors who selected the winning poems), at which each of the teen poets selected for the program had an opportunity to read their winning poems. A brief public reception for the poets followed the reading. Steven T. Licardi is a New York State Licensed Social Worker, an author, spoken word poet, motivational speaker, actor and activist. His current work attempts to meld rhyme scheme and free verse poetry together in ways that feel seamless, subtle and resonating. As a child, Steven was diagnosed with a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, which manifested as an inability to emotionally comprehend his own thoughts. Poetry and performance provided him with the language to understand himself and the world around him. Steven now uses spoken word to fight for social justice and human rights around the world by modeling empathy and inviting dialogue among diverse audiences. She has authored many chapbooks of her work and a full-
length book of poems, Barking at Sunspots. Her visual work has been featured in many group exhibits and she has had numerous solo exhibits both in New York City and on Long Island. For 40 years she has served as associate editor of Humanities Magazine, has served as an editor of the online Poetry Bay Magazine, served as assistant director of the Northport Historical Museum and acted for many years with the Bare Bones Theater Company in Northport. In 2005, she was recognized by State Sen. John Flanagan as a New York State Woman of Distinction in the Arts. Kelly is also a founding member of the Northport Arts Coalition, which is devoted to showcasing Long Island artists, writers and musicians. Currently she is putting together a solo show of her work to benefit Alzheimer’s research. Irish Author and Poet John Anthony Brennan is a native of Crossmaglen, a small, tough town in County Armagh, Ireland. His first book, Don’t Die with Regrets: Ireland and the Lessons My Father Taught Me, was

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently threw out the first pitch at the Long Island Ducks first home game of the season against the New Britain Bees. For the third year in a row, the home opener kicked off Suffolk County’s “Heroes of the Game” program, where a local veteran or active duty service member is honored during a live in-game tribute for their dedication
chosen as winner in the ‘Next Generation Indie Book Awards’ in 2015. It was also chosen as a finalist in the ‘Worldwide Book Excellence Awards’ for 2016. His second book, entitled, The Journey: A Nomad Reflects, is his first poetry collection and continues his life story in a series of free verse and rhythmic narrative. The Journey: A Nomad Reflects also has been chosen as a finalist in the ‘Worldwide Book Excellence Awards’ for 2016. His writings are a representation of a life’s journey and are intended to inspire and inform the reader of a long forgotten Ireland, its connection with the wider world and the deep rooted history embedded in the island’s rocks and the soil. The author has visited most of the sacred sites in this world and is convinced that a common thread connects them. He incorporates his experiences in his works and some of his writing expresses the spiritual dimension. He writes short stories and poetry and performs his works at many venues in Ireland, New York City and Long Island. Poetry for the HART is a Public Art Initiative project developed by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee in conjunction with Teenspeak, Co-Lead Agency, who suggested the project to the Town. Teens in the community from ages 14-18 were invited last fall to submit poems for consideration in the program. A selection panel comprised of the poets Kate Kelly and John A. Brennan, joined by Jim Metcalfe and Caitlin Sempowich, members of the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee, were charged with reviewing the 295 different submissions from 208 different teen poets and narrowing the choices to the winning poems. Additional partners in this project include Heckscher Museum of Art; Huntington Arts Council; The Long Islander, which has pledged to publish the winning poems; REACH CYA; Town of Huntington Youth Bureau; Tri-Community Youth Agency; the award reception host – Walt Whitman Birthplace Association; and Youth Directions & Alternatives CYA, as well as numerous area teachers who actively encouraged their students’ participation. Subsequent to the ceremonies, colorful placards, each bearing a winning poem, will be placed in the interior advertising spaces on buses throughout the HART system. Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable housing and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by many. Each year, Lowe’s provides the support of their employee volunteers, Lowe’s Heroes, and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills so they can feel equipped to take part in the builds. Habitat Suffolk staff and volunteers will join women across the country to help build decent, affordable housing on Long Island as part of National Women Build Week. “Through our
partnership with Habitat and support of National Women Build Week, Lowe’s empowers women to get involved in their communities, learn construction skills and make a meaningful impact,” said James Frison, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We’re grateful to all the women on Long Island who will volunteer this week to help build and repair decent and affordable housing.” Habitat’s first Women Build event was held in 1998. Since then, allwomen construction crews have helped build more than 2,500 homes in partnership with families. Legislator for a Day Yashita Chaudhary will tell you that her first impression of the young woman who is now her best friend was anything but positive. However, she says, the friendship that they now share is built on mutual respect for the differences that helped bring them together. As the winner of the essay contest sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator and Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory during Black History Month, Yashita had an opportunity to write her thoughts on “Making a Difference: How does a role model affect your daily life.” The contest criteria was for students to choose
someone of African American descent whom they consider to be a role model, discuss why this person is a positive influence, and what impact the person has had on their life. It could include a family member, teacher, pastor, coach or neighbor. The goal of the contest was for students to recognize today’s positive African American role models in their everyday life. Yashita wrote about her best friend Miah and the impact she has had on her life once their initial misgivings about each other turned to admiration. “My animal loving, crazy eyed, wide mouthed friend Miah does not affect my daily life
every day, but she changed my life so suddenly making me happy that I could celebrate life with her. She changed it in small ways that added up to a lot in my everyday life. Whenever I look at her now in our Chinese class, I’m happy because I have a second chance to know her. She is a living, breathing African American role model to me. She changed what I was taught as a kid and helped me see the world in a different perspective.” As the essay winner, Yashita received a tour the Legislative Building, shadowed Presiding Officer Gregory on meeting day, and was given an overview of the legislative process.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 29th annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho and the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. Event Chair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event will honor Mark S. Davis Managing Partner, Deloitte. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that the Tennis Classic will once again be a part of the day’s events. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event at the Meadow Brook Club and an afternoon shotgun start at Piping Rock. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception
and awards will follow at the Meadow Brook Club for both courses. For tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults may gain as much as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise–like very brisk walking–even if they don’t begin exercising until middle age. Walking is the single most effective way for many Americans to establish and continue a healthy lifestyle to improve their heart health.
