Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC) and Long Island Events are excited to announce a new partnership, cementing the name BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill. The Farmingville, Long Island venue that holds outside events and concerts was formerly known as the Pennysaver Amphitheater at Bald Hill. The agreement, which goes into effect immediately, will feature the hospital’s brand identity throughout the venue as well as in event promotions. President and CEO of BMHMC Richard T. Margulis said “This year is proving to showcase the changes we have made at BMHMC, both inside our hospital doors and out in the community. We are thrilled to join Long Island Events in supporting a venue that aligns with our focus on being there for the community. We are proud Long Islanders serving our community and now have an opportunity to connect with that community in a new and unique way.” Already home to the biggest Country music concerts on Long Island and the Island Federal Concert Series, Long Island Events just announced a partnership with Live Nation and will work together to bring more live programming to the venue, including premier concerts and music festivals, as well as help to reorganize operations at the venue to help increase “efficiencies” the company said. Third-grade students at James H. Boyd in the Elwood Union Free School District united their love of fairy tales with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) during the last week of April. The Fairy Tale Ball, organized by Boyd teacher Liz Held, had three different “enchanted” challenges for students to complete using teamwork and problem-solving skills. The third-grade class at Boyd recently wrapped up a unit on fairy tales, so each challenge revolved around a story they had studied. At the first station, students built a house for the Three Little Pigs out of toothpicks. The house had to be at least six centimeters high, hold a 20-gram weight, and

withstand the blowing of the big bad wolf, which was a small desk fan with ears. A group of students’ house just barely withstood the blowing of the fan, and one third-grade girl encouraged her teammates, saying “Let’s try again - we can do better than that!” At the second station, students had to build a raft for the three Billy Goats Gruff out of straws and pipe cleaners that could hold the miniature goats and 10 grams for at least 10 seconds. The third station challenged students to create a pulley system that could carry a 25-gram Rapunzel safely down from her Pringle can-tower, using no more than 3 meters of string. Students worked

together to successfully complete each task. Having to start over didn’t discourage them, and Mrs. Held noted that this event continued to enforce the skills and resilience they’re being taught in the classroom. “They’re getting more and more used to by going back and trying things again, even if they fail,” Mrs. Held said. “If they can’t accomplish it during school hours they often take things home and keep trying until they succeed, which is an incredible thing.” In addition to the STEM stations, students wore crowns they had made, and took photos in front of a green-screen castle with their classmates.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Record Breaking Performance Four special Northport High School athletes were honored at the April 12th board of education meeting for their excellence during the winter indoor track season. Elijah Claiborne, Isaiah Claiborne, Thomas Fodor and Dan O’Connor put on the best statistical performance in the 4x800 relay in Suffolk County’s history. Their recordbreaking time of 7:46:36 helped them earn the title of New York State Public School champion. The team also won both the

League and Suffolk County championships during the 2018 season. Isaiah Claiborne flourished as well, earning the crown of New York State champion in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:26.95, which was just 2/10 of a second short of the all-time Suffolk County record for the event. The four students were honored by Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Mark Dantuono, as well as the board of

education and visiting community members. Dantuono stressed that the winter season presented challenging training conditions each day, making it next to impossible to perform at the optimal level, but that didn’t stop these athletes. “This is where their strong will and desire to succeed comes into play,” Dantuono said. “No matter what challenge or obstacle they faced, they found a way to get the job done.”

400th Victory Northport High School girls lacrosse coach Carol Rose recently earned her 400th career victory on April 24. Coach Rose and husband brought the sport of girls lacrosse to Northport High School in 1990 - since then, the program has achieved

many New York State, Long Island, Suffolk County and league titles. Northport has one of the top-placed lacrosse programs in New York, and is currently the top “Class A” team in the state. “Congratulations to Coach Rose for your

commitment to the game of lacrosse,” said Mark Dantuono, director of health, physical education & athletics, “and for the hard work you’ve put into obtaining excellence in this program.”

Young scientists and engineers from the local community attended the fourth annual STEM Fair & Challenge at Northport High School on Saturday, April 21st. This year, the event was expanded to include a kindergarten through fourth grade fair in Northport High School’s commons, featuring 21 STEM activities. This portion was designed and facilitated by kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers, as well as students from the technology and engineering honor society and physics students.

Children, along with their parents, had the opportunity to exercise creativity and problemsolving skills through hands-on experience with VEX robotics, Scratch coding, laser mazes, flower chromatography, hover balloons, and more. In addition, the Cyberian Tigers, the high school robotics team, demonstrated their fifth–generation robot to the young learners in attendance. This robot that reached the quarterfinals at the regional competition at Hofstra University, was made available for students

to control and drive. At the STEM Challenge for grades five through eight, students had a fourhour block to participate in hands-on team events. One hundred students from six different schools made up the 25 participating teams. Teams competed against one another, and were presented awards for top performance in the following events: a mystery solution mix-up, circuit central, the marshmallow tower design, and puzzling math. More than 30 Northport High School students volunteered to help facilitate these events. This event was put together as part of the Team Packard initiative and A Midwinter Night’s Dream Inc., an organization that’s been in existence since 2004. The goal is to raise money for the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and empower students to make a difference in the lives of others. In total, the STEM Challenge raised nearly $30,000, and all funds will be directed to the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins University. Hundreds of people congregated on the Harborfields High School track on April 21st to walk for a special cause, as they worked together to help grant two special boys’ wishes during the third annual Walk for a Wish, which was a joint venture with Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County. Joe wishes to go to Walt Disney World,

where he hopes to meet his favorite character, Buzz Lightyear. Non-perishable food items were also collected to be donated to the Harborfields Food Pantry. “I continue to be amazed by the tremendous character that’s shown by our students, staff and the residents of this tight-knit community,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni said. “Coming together to support such a worthy cause really shows you what Harborfields is all about.”

American Stroke Month During American Stroke Month, May, the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association encourages Long Island residents to join together to end the leading cause of death in New York. Despite striking more than 7 million adults in the United States annually and being a leading cause of serious, long-term disability, globally, stroke is largely preventable and treatable. According to the American Stroke Association, eighty percent of strokes are preventable, but encourages people to act now. Prevention is key. High blood pressure is the most common controllable cause of stroke. If you have it, you need to check it and keep it under control to help prevent a stroke. If you’ve had a stroke, you should ask your doctor for

guidance on preventing a second one. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, according to recent AHA/ASA Hypertension Guidelines, which redefine high blood pressure as 130/80 mm Hg. Eating healthfully, being active and, for some stroke survivors, following an aspirin regimen can help prevent another stroke. Education is also key when it comes to treating stroke. Immediate medical care is crucial to access lifesaving treatment in many cases. The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke® initiative, sponsored nationally by Medtronic teaches the acronym F.A.S.T. to help people to recognize the most common stroke warning signs and what to do if one occurs:

F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. A - Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “The sky is blue.” Is the sentence repeated correctly? T - Time to call 911: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get them to the hospital immediately. Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center visited seventh-graders at Elwood Middle School on April 24th and 25th, teaching students how to analyze and identify DNA. Pauline McGlone, a representative from the Learning Center, conducted a forensics experiment with the class.

Students performed a gel electrophoresis to create a DNA fingerprint to analyze and compare amplified human DNA samples. These samples would then help them determine who committed a crime. Students had the opportunity to use advanced technology such as micropipettes, and they

created their own agarose gel to run their DNA own samples. “We’re excited to help our students connect what they’re learning in class to the real world,” said science teacher Danielle Whitcomb, “and to help them realize the importance, and relevance, of science.”

In the competition, the teams are given a case – this year’s case centered on a high school student arrested for disorderly conduct who accused school officials of questionable motives in the arrest – and are asked to act as attorneys and witnesses. The Huntington team met outside of school hours several times a week for several hours at a time to prepare for the County tournament, competing against 27 other high school teams. They compiled a 7-0 record in winning the championship to move on to the state competition in Albany May 13th-15th. The coaches include Mr. Palacios, attorneys Jack Piana and John LoTurco, and teachers Susan Biagi and Susan Buchalter. The team has twelve members:

Legislator Donnelly addressed the gathering at the dedication on April 26th, offering words of appreciation of the historic donation. Marvin Feinstein was a lifelong book collector and bookseller who lived in Northport. Upon his passing, Mr. Feinstein’s widow, Miriam, and sons David and Allen, wanted to keep his Whitman collection intact and approached the Whitman Association with a donation of 40 books and an offer to donate half the value of the remaining 250 books. This library is composed of many rare books, including first-editions of Leaves of Grass and November Boughs. When Whitman Association Trustee Jeffrey Gould heard of the literary and historic significance of the collection, he generously offered to secure the collection through the Jeffrey

S. Gould Foundation and chose to name the acquisition in honor of his parents, Norman and Jeanette Gould. Legislator Donnelly was joined by other local and state dignitaries at the dedication including fellow Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming. “The entire community is grateful to Trustee Jeffrey Gould and the Feinstein Family for making this extraordinary donation to the Walt Whitman Birthplace,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Their generosity enables current and future generations of Huntington residents and visitors to transport themselves back in time as they relish these rare tomes related to our native son, Walt Whitman.” The Walt Whitman Birthplace is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station (www. waltwhitman.org).

Over 90 members of the community attended the ribbon cutting ceremony to show their support, including two representatives for NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo, NYS OPRHP deputy regional director George Gorman and NYS OPRHP assistant director Vincent Simeone, Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming, Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, and Huntington Town Councilwoman Joan Cergol. The honored donors, WWBA Trustee Jeffrey S. Gould, and Miriam, David, and Allen Feinstein, were presented with certificates in addition to Letters of Recognition from US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and NYS Governor Cuomo. Local actor and Whitman “personator” Darrel Blaine Ford appeared in costume as Walt Whitman to add to the festivities. Governor Cuomo’s letter declared that the collection

“will be of immense value to Whitman scholars and historians and I congratulate all who have had a role in the launching of the Norman and Jeanette Gould Library, Comprised of the Feinstein Collection.” Said WWBA Trustee Jeffrey S. Gould, “Literacy will survive no matter how technological we get.” The Jeffrey S. Gould Foundation, established by WWBA Trustee Jeffrey Gould, generously donated funds to enable WWBA to complete the acquisition of the Feinstein Collection of 250 Whitman-related books. Disaster Recovery Deadline The U.S. Small Business Administration reminds businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters in New York of the deadline to submit disaster loan applications for damages caused by flooding on January 15th-16th, 2018. The deadline to submit applications for physical damage is May 29th, 2018. Low-interest disaster loans are available in Clinton County and the contiguous counties of Essex and Franklin in New York; and Chittenden and Grand Isle counties in

Vermont. Businesses of any size and nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and private, nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless

of whether the business suffered any physical property damage. Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. Interest rates are as low as 3.385 percent for businesses, 2.5 percent for nonprofit organizations, and 1.75 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are

based on each applicant’s financial condition. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may include a safe room or storm shelter to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at Disasterloan.sba.gov. Businesses and

individuals may also obtain information and loan applications by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1.800.659.2955 (1.800.877.8339) for the deaf and hard-ofhearing), or by emailing disastercustomerservice@ sba.gov.
