Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Matinecock Cub Scouts Race Pinewood Derby Cars “And they’re off!!!!” Racing six small wooden vehicles on the speciallyfitted track in each heat, 78 hand-crafted Pinewood Derby cars were in the competitions at the Annual Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America)’s district-wide runoff event held in the gym of the William T Rogers Middle School in Kings Park on April 14, 2018. The cars had to be made by the boys (and parents could assist) in shaping and decorating the 5-ounce block of wood contained in the Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The 7- to 10-year-

olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 78 Lions, Tigers, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their

cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received a commemorative patch. The scouts and their families, representing 25 of the 33 Matinecock Cub Packs, had a fun day at this Matinecock District 2018 Pinewood Derby. Electronically scored, the pinewood derby cars raced from a variety of speeds of 202.07 mph to 218.34 mph and were timed at speeds of 3.359 seconds to a top speed of 3.115 seconds as they came to the finish line on the 40-foot long racing tracks.

They can be turned into new products, such as

paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s

green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush

cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. Fifth graders in Jeffrey Faragasso’s class at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District are learning about the basics of finance, savings, investing and banking during their yearlong mock stock market competition. Each September, every student in the class receives a credit of $100,000 to purchase

five different stocks and build a portfolio. There’s no buying or selling throughout the year, so Mr. Faragasso urges his students to choose wisely. Every Friday during the school year, they discuss the progress of their stocks, take a look at their earnings and losses and predict what they think may happen to their stocks. The class also discusses

news and current events and ties those discussions into why certain stocks may be performing better than others. Outside of the classroom, there’s a leaderboard featuring the top-performing portfolios and the winner at the end of the school year receives a breakfast.

Day Of Remembrance Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West spent April 11 educating its sophomore classes on events of the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide. As part of its social studies curriculum, the schools have held a Holocaust Remembrance and Genocide Awareness Day for the past 18 years. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. During the full-day event, the 10th graders listened to a lecture by Rwandan

genocide survivor and former Parliament speaker Joseph Sebarenzi. A second guest lecture included a testimony from Holocaust survivor Werner Reich. The lectures help students connect on a more personal level and understand the importance of empathy and forgiveness despite these tragedies. “Werner Reich and Joseph Sebarenzi’s presentations were both very inspirational and gave you a feeling to be a better person and try to

keep peace for the future,” said Ashley Lockwood, Smithtown High School West student. “Also, to try and forgive others to stay healthy and get rid of anger and bitterness.” During breakout sessions, students worked in smaller groups for different activities. They spent two periods learning the background of what happened in Cambodia and Rwanda through a presentation and film clips and created an awareness poster.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location.
