Program Recognition Several members of the Family and Consumer Science department at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District were recently recognized for their accomplishments. Ms. Roxo was nominated by her fellow teachers for her outstanding contributions to the field of family and consumer sciences and will be recognized at a special ceremony on May 21st, sponsored by LIFACS. “I am elated and thrilled to be recognized with this honor,” Ms. Roxo said. In addition to Ms. Roxo’s accomplishment,
several students from the department were also recognized for their work. Eighth-grader Alissa Barber was honored as the grand-prize winner in the LIFACS “Masters of Invention” middle school challenge. For this contest, students were asked to invent a new product and create a marketing strategy to support the product.

Program Recognition Continued From 2 Students were asked to think out the details of their invention, its price, how it would be promoted and how it would be distributed. For her invention, Alissa created “coffee critters,” a stopper that can be inserted into any coffee lid to prevent the beverage from spilling. The stopper is topped with
a creative clay critter – designs include a donut, strawberry and pig. Max Hafem, a fellow eighth-grade student, also entered the Masters of Invention challenge. “While he did not earn award recognition, his invention and creation of a hovercraft wowed his fellow students,” Ms. Roxo said. Using a leaf blower,
piece of wood and tarp, Max created a working hovercraft. Student Jessica Gallen was a grand-prize winner in the LIFACS “It’s Not Easy Being Green” contest. For this challenge, students were tasked to reuse or repurpose an existing item in an effort to create a greener world. Jessica reused a vinyl record to
create a clock. “My parents have a huge stock of old records, so I thought it would be neat to use that for my invention,” said Jessica. Alissa and Jessica will also be honored at the LIFACS reception for their accomplishments on May 21st, along with their teacher Ms. Roxo.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”
It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

A Home Away From Home
I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,
as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty
bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

The presentation will be made at the CAPS 16th Annual Golf Outing, Monday, June 9th, at The Mill River Club, Oyster Bay, and will support the work of the agency’s Bully Prevention Center. “Both Nancy and Susan’s commitment to the wellbeing and safety of Long Island’s children has been demonstrated in their work as volunteers for CAPS and as leaders on the CAPS Board of Directors,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We applaud their efforts to prevent child abuse and bullying through their work and working to fulfill the CAPS mission of keeping every child safe from harm.” Nancy Greulich has been an active volunteer and contributor to CAPS since 1998. For 13 of her 16 years of service, she has served in multiple leadership roles on the Board of Directors, including Board President, and now, as social media manager. As an experienced, talented and sensitive CAPS volunteer, Nancy has touched the lives of more than 20,000 Long Island children. Susan Silverman has been an active CAPS volunteer and contributor for 14 years. Since 2006, when she joined the
Board of Directors, Susan has assumed leadership roles on the executive committee as President and Administrative Vice President. Susan’s dedication to the well-being of children is exemplified by her deep commitment to volunteerism, advocacy and keeping children safe. The Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services was founded in 1982. The CAPS Bully Prevention Center, opened in 2012, is the first of its kind to offer parents the direct support and resources they need to resolve bullying and cyber-bullying incidents involving their school-age child. GOOD SAMARITANS HONORED - Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recognized the heroism of two young men Tuesday at the General Meeting of the Legislature. James A. Marks, II and Michael Crawford, both from Huntington, were first to arrive at the scene of an automobile accident and took swift action to help save the life of a woman trapped in a burning car. The accident occurred March 8th on Route 347 in Hauppauge. Presiding Officer Gregory presented the good Samaritans with proclamations as he spoke of their bravery and commended them for their heroic actions.

Parking Meters Unveiled Parking in Huntington Village experienced a major transformation on Monday, April 28th, with the activation of multispace parking pay stations on Main Street and New York Avenue, as well as at the Huntington Long Island Rail Road Station. The multi-space meters are the most visible of a series of changes aimed at improving parking in Huntington Village, including a change in the hours for which metered parking is active (10 am to 8 pm, MondaySaturday); the designation of a primary and secondary metered parking zone, with different per-hour parking rates ($1 an hour for the primary zone, 50 cents an hour for the secondary zone); and an increase to three hours in the maximum a vehicle can remain parked at a spot. As a convenience to motorists, the multi-space pay stations accept both cash and credit cards. The Town is also finalizing the details with the company Parkmobile USA to allow motorists to pay for
parking through a smart phone app. The multispace pay stations are in effect in the primary zone. The secondary zone still has the traditional coinoperated meters. To help motorists become aware of the changes and to learn how to use the new pay stations, the Town designated some members of the Public Safety Department as “parking ambassadors,” who were available on New York Avenue and Main Street to provide assistance and to hand out a brochure with the relevant information. The brochure also includes a map of municipal parking lots in the Village, at which parking is free. The brochure will also be available at participating merchants in the Village and on the Town’s website, http://huntingtonny.gov. The changes implement some of the recommendations contained in a study of parking in Huntington Village commissioned by a consortium that includes the Town, the Town of
Huntington Economic Development Corp., the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Village Business Improvement District and the Paramount Theater. “The consortium continues to explore new ways to enhance the parking experience in Huntington Village, ranging from measures such as these that can be implemented quickly to others that require more time to investigate and plan,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said. “I appreciate the hard work that has gone into this effort, and the continuing commitment of all the partners in the consortium to consider and implement innovative solutions to a long-standing issue.” Among the other shorterterm solutions is improved signage to direct motorists to municipal parking lots. Supervisor Petrone has also appointed a subcommittee of consortium representatives to look at questions surrounding a parking structure.
