Wyandanch Public Library Announces 2020-2021 Proposed Budget: $2,079,648 The Board of Trustees of the Wyandanch Public Library held a budget information session with district residents to discuss its proposed 2020-2021 budget. The total Budget expenditure for the year proposed is $2,079,648.00. The total proposed amount to be raised in taxes will

be $1,957,620.00. The proposed tax increase of 1.81% is within the New York State Tax Cap. The Budget/Trustee vote, has been postponed to June by Executive Order from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. The state’s mandate concerns the spread of the coronavirus

health and wellbeing. The Board is working to expand our services to provide sensitive counselling and key information to help our families, residents and young people cope during this COVID-19 crisis,” she concluded, adding, “The campaign and activities will be announced

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips On Talking To Kids About Coronavirus

As part of the effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, local schools have been ordered to close for several weeks. This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends. Providing answers to inquisitive youngsters can be challenging for parents, trying to balance sharing information without unnecessarily alarming their kids. “With schools closed and many parents working at home temporarily, children will want to know what is causing the changes to what they perceive as normal life,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavior Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “Also, mobile technology gives many young people access to news and information, which could overwhelm them and cause anxiety.” The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about coronavirus. - Think about and rehearse scripts for discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic. - Discuss the situation openly. Avoiding the topic

or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety. - Don’t give more information then is requested. Check to make sure your children understand your response by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions. - Help your school-aged child and adolescents set boundaries on their information flow in the same way you are setting your own boundaries. Help them identify factual sources of information and set appropriate intervals to check-in. - Keep as many routines intact as possible. For children who are out of school, it is important to maintain other familiar routines such as mealtimes and bedtimes. - Use technology to keep children in touch with a friend or older family members. This allows them to maintain connections while adhering to calls to stay at home to helpprevent the spread of coronavirus. - Encourage physical activity and time outside, where possible. Staying active and having opportunities to be outdoors safely are helpful in mitigating anxiety and building resilience. - Use this situation as an opportunity to teach distress tolerance skills that will be helpful to your kids in any situation.

Elwood Union Free School District is proud to announce that both John H. Glenn High School and Harley Avenue Primary School were recently identified as “Recognized Schools” for the 2019-20 school year by the New York State Education Department. Harley Avenue and John Glenn High School were two of 582 “Recognition Schools,” including 37 Charter schools, in 244 districts. Data from 2018-19 showed that both schools were in “Good Standing” and among the top performing in the state under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) accountability system for academic performance in core subjects, as well as for student growth in English language arts or mathematics for elementary and middle schools. These schools also performed exceedingly well on the state’s Measures of Interim Progress for the English language arts and mathematics progress, Chronic Absenteeism and the College, Career and Civic Readiness indicators. These schools also met the federal 95% participation rate assessment requirement for the English language arts and mathematics assessments and performed exceedingly well on the English Language Proficiency indicator exams. NYSED also took into consideration John Glen High School’s graduation rate of 98%, which is well above the state median of 83.4%. In the coming weeks, both John Glenn High School and Harley Avenue Primary School will receive a Certificate of Recognition. “As the memo indicates, there are several data points that are reviewed in order to obtain this designation. Only a small percentage of schools within the state are able to meet them,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert said. “Congratulations to Harley Avenue Principal Elissa Millan and John Glenn Principal Carisa Burzynski for steering the ship in such a positive way!”

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed

and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, please make a donation online at www. guardiansofrescue.org/donate.

Uplifting Community News!

A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon. With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

In a press release of March 18, 2020, Wyandanch Public Library Board of Trustees and Library Director shared its concerns with the safety, health and protection of the community and its staff in its concurrence that the library should be closed. As of this date, the library is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday, May 15, 2020. The public is encouraged to check the library’s website www. wyandanchlibrary.org. and Facebook page for updates regarding an official reopening date. “While public events, programs and outreach activities have been postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the library is still open to the public through the wonders of social media, and through our commitment to being a community partner,” said Shadd Jamison, Director of the Wyandanch Library. “We recently donated the library’s 3D printer to the Wyandanch Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp. Our local First Responders

are using this equipment to build prototypes of protective gear against COVID-19, including goggles and face shields.” Jamison also noted that Wyandanch’s Library’s enhanced services are available to home-bound patrons through their laptops, computers and smart phones. “Effective immediately,” he announced, “librarygoers can live chat with a Wyandanch librarian in real time, weekdays, 10:00am6pm, and Saturdays, 10am3pm, just by going to our website and touching the bottom right hand corner of their screens. While the needs that students have been accustomed to addressing has changed drastically, the ever-resilient members have adapted and overcome to provide necessities to essential workers and food pantries across Long Island. “We find ourselves in difficult times. The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope 5K Succeeds, Virtually Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic elementary schools. The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself. The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board
