Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help

In partnership with the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank, Long Island’s only diaper bank, Help Me Grow– Long Island recently donated 53,250 diapers and 43,200 baby wipes to struggling Long Island families for distribution through Island Harvest Food Bank. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, approximately one in three U.S. families experienced diaper need, a public health issue exacerbated by the growing economic and unemployment crisis caused by the pandemic. Diaper costs are supported by a grant from The JPB Foundation through Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. This opportunity was made available by the Help Me Grow National Center to Help Me Grow–Long Island, an initiative overseen by Docs for Tots. The diapers are secured through the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN). As a recognized member of

NDBN, a national nonprofit, The Allied Foundation Diaper Bank is given direct access to high-quality diapers needed to help keep all babies clean, dry and healthy in their communities. The Allied Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded by Allied Physicians Group, based in Melville, has distributed 915,000 diapers to families in need in Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Brooklyn since its inception in 2017. In all of 2019, the diaper bank distributed 45,000 diapers; however, because of the unprecedented demand for diapers, today the program is on track to distribute 1 million diapers in 2021 to help families who are less fortunate. “Infants require up to 12 diapers a day, toddlers about eight making the cost as much as $80 per month, per baby. Clean, dry diapers are critical for ensuring good health to prevent illness and skin infection. More parents

are struggling and simply unable to afford them due to loss of employment or other hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Allied Foundation Executive Director Heather Edwards. “No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers,” explained Scott Svitek, MD, Chair, Allied Foundation Board and Partner, Allied Physicians Group. “Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 95 percent of the families that contact us need help with diapers,” said Melissa Passarelli, Director of Programs, Docs for Tots and Help Me Grow–Long Island Coordinator. “We have been working with our partners connecting families with diapers. This grant from the JPB Foundation allows us to get diapers into the hands of families who need them most.” “Diapers and baby wipes are items that are in high

demand among parents struggling to make ends meet, even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Marc Suntup, Vice President of Development, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to the generous donation by The Allied Foundation, Help Me Grow– Long Island and Docs for

Women Of Distinction For 2021 Lisa Karrer and Deborah Porretto, two residents of Huntington Station that have generously volunteered and given back to the community, have been selected by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) as the District 17 Women of Distinction for 2021. Legislator Donnelly had the opportunity to honor Ms. Karrer and Ms. Porretto by presenting each of them with a special Proclamation at their home. Ms. Karrer and Ms. Porretto are both cofounders of Brett’s Bicycle Recycle, Inc. (BBR), the all-volunteer nonprofit that recycled and refurbished bicycles, tricycles, skateboards and scooters for people in need at no charge. They founded BBR after the tragic loss of Lisa’s brother, Deborah’s

brother-in-law, Brett Rainey in a motorcycle accident. Their mission was to give back to the community that rallied around them and to honor Brett’s memory. As BBR winds down this year, Ms. Karrer and Ms. Porretto have much to be proud of as they have repaired, recycled and delivered more than 500 bicycles to those in need. BBR also conducted bicycle safety events, gave bicycle maintenance workshops, provided guidance on proper helmet fitting and worked with local first responders to teach handsonly CPR training. The Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Recognition Program was established in 2002 to give each County Legislator the opportunity to honor constituents who reside in his or her legislative district

and have demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to community. In conjunction with Women’s History Month, Ms. Karrer, Ms. Porretto and the names of the other legislative district honorees were read into the record and broadcast via Zoom at the March 16 Legislature General Meeting. “Ms. Karrer and Ms. Porretto turned tragedy into action and demonstrated a spirited commitment to ensuring those in our community most in need are given one of the greatest and simplest pleasures, a bicycle,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It is a privilege to honor them as my Women of Distinction for 2021. On behalf of the entire community, I thank them for all that they have done.”

Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals. Hope House Ministries offers

many programs, such as their Community House, Hope Academy, Montfort Therapeutic Residence, Pax Christi Hospitality Center, St. Maximillian Kolbe Outpatient Addictions Treatment Center, Wisdom House and much more.
