In recognition of his dedication to the fight against cancer, Joseph R. Biden Jr., 47th Vice President of the United States of America, was honored at Stony Brook University’s annual charity Gala at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Hosted by the Stony Brook Foundation, the Gala generates funds for student financial aid and a select academic area of excellence. This year, the University raised $6,946,000 in gifts and pledges including $2,051,000 for scholarships and $4,895,000 to support the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Since 2000, the event has raised more than $50 million. As Vice President, Joe Biden led the White House “Cancer Moonshot” with the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing the disease that leads to more than 8 million deaths worldwide every year. The intention, said Biden in his remarks, was to infuse the cancer research culture with “the urgency of now.” Under his leadership, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful partnerships among 20 government agencies, departments and White House offices as well as over 70 private sector collaborations. Biden also helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot scientific priorities. “The Moonshot is a program,” said Biden that “has become a movement, giving cancer patients and the people impacted by their illness new hope. And what cancer patients want more than ever is hope. But we can only hope to make sustainable progress if we’re preparing the next generation of cancer scientists and doctors.” “At Stony Brook,

All funds raised at the 5K Jones Beach walk will benefit programs at The Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Pre-register online at

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column
ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.
It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Options for Community Living held its third annual comedy night fundraising event at Governor’s in Levittown on Sunday, April 23rd. The event raised close to $3,000 from the approximately 70 employees, friends and supporters in attendance. The proceeds from this event will benefit Options’
programs which provide vital housing and services for Long Islanders in need. Options is grateful to Martha Clara Vineyards, Sky Zone of Deer Park, Long Island Adventure Park, Little Bird Curious Confections and many local businesses who generously donated gifts for the raffle baskets. “We are so grateful to

Why Music Education Matters
Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts budget in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts. The benefits of music education extend far beyond getting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many reasons to support music education in schools. Music training helps develop language skills. Studies have shown that music training contributes to the physical development of the part of the left side of the brain associated with processing
language. A 2005 study from researchers at Stanford University found that mastering a musical instrument may also improve reading skills, which can benefit students both inside and outside the classroom. Music training can improve hand-eye coordination. Studies have linked long-term music training to improved hand-eye coordination. That is likely connected to the motor skills children develop when playing musical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly. Music improves concentration. Even students who cannot play a musical instrument can still benefit academically from simply listening to music. In 2007, a research team from the Stanford University School of
Medicine found that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention. Today’s students deal with numerous distractions, from smartphones to tablets to social media, but those who routinely listen to certain types of music might find it easier to block out those distractions and focus on their work. Music can help students’ e m o t i o n a l development. A 2003 study commissioned by Chorus America found musicians are more likely than the average person to be involved in charity work as volunteers and donors. The NAfME also notes that music students may be more likely to exhibit empathy toward other cultures. Music can improve self-esteem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study. Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives.
Unique Ways to Use Newspapers in the Classroom Today’s students have numerous devices at their disposal that can make learning more fun. Teachers may rely on such devices to engage students, but one more traditional teaching tool can still be an asset in the classroom. Newspapers have changed considerably over the last decade-plus, but they still can serve teachers and students alike. The following are a handful of ways for teachers to incorporate newspapers into their lesson plans. Use newspapers to teach geography. Whether they’re local, national or international periodicals, newspapers contain stories from all over the globe. Teachers tasked with teaching students about world geography can assign each student an article about a newsworthy event taking place in a given country. Kids can then write a report about that country, including information about its location in the world, its citizens and its history. Use newspapers to teach vocabulary. Perhaps no
resource is more valuable than newspapers when teaching vocabulary. Assign each student a story or stories from the newspaper, instructing them to underline or jot down between five and 10 words they are unfamiliar with as they read. Once they have finished reading their assigned articles, students can then look up and write down the meaning of each word, ultimately handing in their list of words and/ or sharing those words and their meanings with their classmates. Use newspapers to teach mathematics. While newspapers are often touted as great tools to teach reading comprehension and vocabulary, they also can be used to teach math lessons. For example, newspaper classified sections typically list dozens, if not hundreds, of items for sale. Assign each student 10 vehicles listed in the classified section and ask them to calculate the average asking prices of these vehicles. Another potential lesson is to ask kids to
determine the percentage breakdown of each section of the newspaper. You can then explore the reasons why certain sections may be given more ink than others. Use newspapers to teach current events. The world is an interesting place, and newspapers are great resources for people looking to keep up with all that is going on in the world. While current events can sometimes be confusing for young students, newspaper reporters aim to convey complicated topics in ways that readers of all ages and backgrounds can understand. By assigning newspaper articles as part of their students’ current events assignments, teachers can help students gain a better understanding of what’s going on in their world. While newspapers may have changed considerably over the last several years, they still make great teaching tools that can benefit instructors and students alike. 327964BN0503

How Art Benefits Young Brains Art enriches lives and can be used to connect people from all walks of life. Among the many additional benefits of art is its effects on young people and the development of their brains. The American Association of School Administrators notes that neuroscience research has shown that the effects of the arts on a young brain’s cognitive, social and emotional development can be profound. Art helps to wire the brain. The AASA notes that especially young children spend much of their time playing, and that play often includes forms of art such as singing, drawing and dancing. These artistic activities engage various senses and help to wire the brain so it can learn. As children age, these seemingly basic activities remain essential for young brains. Art helps children develop their motor skills. Dancing and other movements that might be
prompted by exposure to art help children develop motor skills. Motor skills are necessary for kids to perform important and necessary daily tasks while also promoting independence. Art helps kids learn to think. The AASA notes that art can be a valuable tool in instilling essential thinking tools in children, including the ability to recognize and develop patterns, the ability to form mental representations of what is observed or imagined, and the ability to observe the world around them. Art can improve memory and focus. The AASA cites studies that listening to music can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for memory recall and visual imagery. In addition, background music played in a classroom has been shown to help students remain focused while completing certain learning tasks.
Art can positively affect how students approach other courses. Studies have shown that incorporating arts into core curriculums can have a number of positive effects on students’ overall academic performance and benefit students socially. Studies indicate that students involved in such integrative programs are more emotionally invested in their classes and work more diligently than those not studying in such conditions. In addition, students may learn more from one another when the arts are integrated into core curriculums than when they are not. Art is often mistakenly seen as a strictly fun component of children’s education. But the effects of art on young brains is considerable, helping young people develop in ways that may surprise many men and women.
Get the Most Out of Phys Ed Classes School gives students a chance to learn and grow. During the course of their academic careers, students explore many different subjects, hopefully finding at least one that inspires them to one day pursue rewarding careers. Physical education is one subject that is often overlooked. Gym class may seem like just a fun elective, but the importance of physical education cannot be understated, especially as so many youngsters struggle to maintain healthy weights. Physical education can help children live healthier, more fulfilling lives, benefiting
them in ways that go beyond their waistlines. Improved health and stamina: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that only 29 percent of high school students are getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that young people between the ages six and 17 should get at least an hour of physical activity each day. Physical education classes can help students meet or exceed those physical activity
recommendations. Creates a love for sports: Gym class exposes students to various athletic activities, encouraging them to dabble in different sports. That opportunity may expose young children to a sport they will embrace and play for the rest of their lives. Improved academic performance: A largescale study of 12,000 Nebraska schoolchildren published in The Journal of Pediatrics found that physical fitness could be linked to improved academic performance.

The Pros of Cursive Writing Various experts and educators have weighed in on the lasting benefits of cursive handwriting. Here are just a few of the benefits proponents of cursive writing point to. Cursive writing stimulates the brain. “Cursive writing helps train the brain to integrate visual and tactile information, and fine motor dexterity,” Dr. William Klemm said in an article in Psychology Today. The skills developed from learning cursive writing cannot be replaced by using a keyboard. In addition, MRIs have revealed an interesting relationship between handwriting and the brain. The brains of people with good handwriting are more active in areas associated with cognition, language and executive function than the brains of those with poor handwriting. Cursive writing may promote focus. Writing things down by hand forces a person to slow down and formulate his or her thought. Handwritten notes may hold the advantage over computer-typed notes in
terms of recollection of facts. Cursive writing may help students with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a language processing disorder that can hinder reading, writing, spelling and sometimes even speaking. According to the International Dyslexia Association, when writing cursive, the words jotted down become a unit, rather than a series of separate strokes, and that may contribute to better spelling. And since all lowercase cursive letters begin on the line, fewer of them are likely to be reversed. The Cons of Cursive Writing There are various reasons why people think lessons in cursive writing are unnecessary. Cursive writing is only used in signatures. Cursive writing is seldom used except for signatures. Even then, e-signing and online transactions have removed the need to write in cursive. Typing on a keyboard should take precedence. Many parents and educators believe that cursive writing lessons do little to prepare young students for an increasingly digital world. Such opponents of cursive writing suggest keyboarding lessons should take precedence over teaching handwriting skills. Teachers have admitted that cursive writing lessons take a lot of time, and many simply cannot devote classroom time to them. Digital texts make it obsolete. Some argue that those who do not know how to read in cursive can never understand historical texts or early manuscripts. However, so much has been transcribed into digital texts that this argument is seen by many as outdated. Cursive writing may be going the way of the dinosaur. Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association of Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Its purpose is to increase awareness of school bus safety, as well as the dangers associated with passing a school bus illegally. “An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me - 50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop Day is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result in injury or death. Northport High School senior Frankie Stola in the Northport-East Northport School District was named a News 12 Scholar Athlete Winner on April 18th. The baseball and football player was presented with a $1,000 scholarship from the Bethpage Federal Credit Union. News 12 and Bethpage Federal Credit Union selects 30 student-athletes from across Long Island each year that show excellent skills on and off the fields. Stola was the 26th student this year to be recognized with the honor. He has been invited to the Scholar Athlete Banquet on June 13 to celebrate his achievement with the other 29 selected student-
athletes. Surrounded by his baseball coach John DeMartini and Director of Physical Education, Athletics and Health Paul Klimuszko, Stola was congratulated by News 12 and Bethpage Federal Credit Union for his strong academic skills and talent on the field. Currently a captain on the Northport High School baseball team, Stola plays centerfield and has continually proved to be a valuable player. Playing baseball for as long as he could remember, Stola has been a member of the high school team for the past three years. He was selected for Newsday’s AllLong Island second team
Mathematical Stars in 2016 and also made it to the county finals with his team last year. “He is a coach’s dream,” said DeMartini. “We are very lucky to have a player like him on the team. He has a high baseball IQ and is an all-around good athlete and good person.” In addition to baseball, Stola has found a passion for football as well. He plays safety and wide-receiver for the high school team and plans to follow his love for both baseball and football into his college career. Stola will be attending Williams College in the fall where he plans to study business and play both of the sports that he enjoys.
Top Oldfield Middle School students in the Harborfields Central School District in sixth through eighth grade, recently competed in the 2017 Suffolk County Mathematics Contest. Sixth-grader Michael Considine and eighthgrader Jacky Xie came in first place for the school as well as the county, while seventh-grader Jacob Siegel came in first for the school. Sponsored by the Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers Association, the contest featured approximately 8,000 students in grades six through 12. The students participated in the hour-
long contest involving high level math questions. Xie tied for first place in the county in the algebra category, while in the prealgebra category, Siegel was crowned the first-place winner for the school. At the sixth-grade level, Considine received first place in the county. Other Oldfield Middle School winners that landed in the top five for the sixth-grade level included Athena Braverman, Kamden Johansen, Caleb Kapen, Abby McGullam, Maxmillian Stratton and Marcus Wynter. Pre-Alegbra students that claimed top five spots consisted of Ryan Barker, Marina Bergin,
Anthony Kelly, Audrey Mergenthaler, Alison Ryan, Jack Steel, Guantian Tao, John Thompson and Joseph Weitman. The algebra category also carried students into the top five. These students were Evan Ackerman, Rohan Dondeti, Ty Ellenbogen, Emma Hardwick and Dylan Topolovec. The first-place winners, including eighth-grader Evan Ackerman who placed second in the algebra category and Caleb Kapen who placed second out of the sixth-grade winners, will be honored at the county level at an awards ceremony on May 2nd in Patchogue.

Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Huntington Town Board marked Arbor Day 2017 Saturday, April 22nd, by joining with students and administrators from the Huntington and Harborfields School Districts in planting a tree in Heckscher Park, one of 100 to be planted this year in honor of the park’s 100th anniversary. Joining Supervisor Petrone and Board Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland and Tracey A. Edwards were Huntington schools superintendent James Polansky, Harborfields superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni, students from their high schools and members of Girl Scout Troop 1632 from Huntington. After
helping Town officials plant the a tree in front of the cottage at the park, the high school students planted 50 native bare root saplings throughout the park. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the Town’s annual Earth Day Expo, during which the Town also distributed 200 native bare root saplings to residents courtesy of the National Wildlife Federation. During the last three years the Town has given away 750 saplings to Town residents thanks to the National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife program. The Town has also completed various tree plantings in parks and planted many street trees along Town rights-of-way. For the 19th
District Donation During the Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education meeting on April 19th, the district received a donation of $50,000 from the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation to support the district’s Technology 2.0 initiative. In an effort to prepare students to be successful in the 21st century, the district proposed a Technology 2.0 initiative that will give students the necessary tools to be more successful in the classroom. This includes expanding on Chromebooks with a one-
to-one technology plan. HACEF Vice President Karin Fey and HACEF Gala Co-chairs Joyce Johnston and Kelly Walker presented the check to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni, Board President Nicholas Giuliano and board trustee Suzie Lustig during the meeting. The donation was made possible through funds raised at HACEF’s Mardi Gras Gala and HACEF’s Summer Camp program. “I want to thank the whole community for getting together for this outstanding event that
was so successful for our students, for our vision and ultimately for the entire technology plan that we are about to roll out,” said Dr. Ianni. “Fifty-thousand dollars in one night is just unbelievable. Thank you so much to the entire HACEF group for this amazing donation.” Giuliano also extended his thanks to the organization for their support. “This is a major achievement for Harborfields,” he said. “Thank you so much. This will do so much good for us and for our educational programs.”

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 13th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support
to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy. Simply leave nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no glass items), next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Your USPS letter carrier will do the rest. All food donated will help replenish Island
Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Every donation, no matter how small, will help us serve those of our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “We have an amazing, long-standing partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the United
