Moving Forward By way of background, the study and application of Zen is perhaps the most challenging to write about. Although numerous books and articles abound, there are many folks out there who know nothing about the subject. It is this group who is my main focus in exploring the power of Zen. Further, this article adds on to my second column (written a few weeks ago), The Art and Pleasure of Meditation. Let’s begin with a definition of Zen. Simply put, it is a different way of looking at life. It is not a religion, nor any type of cult. However, through the study of Zen over the years, many people have found that it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment, a greater understanding of yourself and others, and could be a turning point in your life. It’s important to note that I am not a Zen Master – merely someone who started my training while I was serving with the military in the Far East, and my studies have continued to this day. By delving deeper into Zen through reading, and continuing practical usage, the real meaning and application will come to you...but one must be patient.

Examples of Zen are everywhere: in flower arranging, creating a Zen garden; meditating; achieving a goal that you worked hard for; watching a glorious sunset...any activity where your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. To reinforce the Zen concept, I would suggest that you find a basic book on the practice of Zen. There, you will find a series of guiding principles that will aid you on your journey to enlightenment. At this point, some personal examples of Zen might be helpful... Weather permitting, late in the afternoon, I watch the sunset from my deck following a short meditation period. Studying the wooded landscape, I notice the wonders of nature abound; thirsty birds drinking from my bird bath, several squirrels skillfully jumping from tree to tree, sounds of birds calling to one another and the beauty of observing new buds forming on many plants in my Zen garden. After a while, I begin to feel an inward sense of peace. A while ago, I needed to put down slates in my lawn on the side of my house, from the front to the back, a distance of

The Power of Zen approximately 30 feet. Once I purchased the slates, I began to think how they should be placed. After a while, I remembered a Zen principle on life - that the journey through life is never smooth, with many twists and turns. Following that principle, I placed each slate in an uneven pattern, which gave me a nice sense of satisfaction. To help you get started, I would suggest finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. If possible, start with a short meditation {refer back to my second column on the subject}, then ponder the following questions: Who am I? Am I living my life to the fullest? What are my important goals in life, and how many have I achieved? How can I become a better person? What gives me the most satisfaction? While my work life pays the bills, how much time have I spent with family and friends? Do I still have time to “smell the roses”? The next step would be to self-examine those factors which might get in the way of achieving the goals listed in the above paragraph. For example, let’s take the first one listed above – Who am I? This takes into

account a broad spectrum, which can spill over to many of the others listed above. My personal example is as follows: Once a year (usually around late September), I drive out to the eastern end of Long Island where the beaches have already been vacated by the summer tourists. I jog for about one mile (on the hard sand), then rest on a sand dune. At that point, I ponder three questions: (1) Where am I now - in my life, my personal goals, my marriage, my job and my comfort zone? (2) Where do I want to be in three, six and 12 months from now? (3) What is my plan to get there? Space limitations in this column prevent me from going into further detail, but it should give you enough “food for thought” to start your journey. The practice of Zen and its road to self-fulfillment takes much practice and dedication. It is a process of discovering your inner self and, in doing so, achieving a more meaningful life. Like the journey through life, expect twists and turns, achievements and disapointments, but always stay on the path. Why not start moving forward now? Peace

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

exceptional musicians, and once accepted into the program, rehearsed intensively for the upcoming performance in the Tilles Festival band, an ensemble composed of the LIU Post Wind Symphony and exceptional high school musicians from across the New York metropolitan area.

Recycling Pilot Program

The Festival Band was directed and conducted by LIU Post Director of Wind Studies Dr. James McRoy, and 2018 Composerin-Residence Mark Camphouse. The Festival Band performed four pieces, two of which were of Mr. Camphouse’s own composition.

Elwood Union Free School District has been selected to pilot a new school recycling program as a part of the Suffolk Share Initiative, in partnership with the Suffolk County Executive’s Office. Each classroom throughout the district will receive two containers to aid in recycling efforts — one for paper and one for plastic. This year’s Suffolk County High School Mock Trial Tournament was a tremendous success. Over 450 students from 27 Suffolk County public and private high schools participated in the competition. The United States District Court, Eastern District of New York Judge Joanna Seybert presided over the championship round that took place in the Federal Courthouse in Central Islip where the team from Huntington High School defeated the team from Ward Melville High School. Huntington High School, the Suffolk County Regional Champion, will represent the County in the State Finals held in Albany (May 13th-15th). The New York Statewide High School Mock Trial Program is a joint venture of the New York Bar Foundation, the New York State Bar Association, and the Law, Youth & Citizenship (LYC) Program. While the Mock Trial Tournament is set up as a “competition,” emphasis is placed on the educational aspect of the experience which focuses on the preparation and presentation of a hypothetical courtroom trial that involves critical issues that are important and interesting to young people. High school teams from public and nonpublic schools participate in the tournament, beginning at the county level. In tournament competition, the teams argue both sides of the case and assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses. Judges, usually local judges or attorneys, score the teams based on a rating sheet that includes scoring

academic studies and stimulates interest in law-related careers. County Coordinators and Suffolk County Bar Association members, Glenn P. 13 Triskaidekaphobia: fear of the number 13 I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

Councilwoman Joan Cergol served as the mistress of ceremonies April 20th at the Sixth Annual Senior Fashion Show, held at the Village Green Senior Center. Councilwoman Cergol described the fashions worn by the 16 models, as each paraded down the “runway” in the Senior Center dining room and then through the packed crowd. The Councilwoman was wearing a Joseph Ribkoff ensemble that she purchased at Studio East in Northport, which provided many of fashions worn by the models. Other fashions came from the models’

personal wardrobes. The outfits carried on the theme of the show: Elegant in the Elements. As each model displayed her outfit, Councilwoman Cergol noted which of the four elements it represented – earth, wind, water or fire. Hair stylings and makeup for the models was provided by students from the New York Institute of Beauty, the oldest, licensed beauty school in New York State. Music was provided by D.J. Bob. The models, all members of various Town Senior Clubs and active participants in Town senior programs, come from a

variety of backgrounds, including retired teachers, attorneys, fire department administrators, hospital administrators, advertising executives, art and real estate, to list a few. “I hope the models had as much fun displaying the clothing as I did officiating at the festivities,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “They are all such good sports, and I appreciate all of their work and the hard work of the Senior Center staff in planning the show. I am already looking forward to next year.”

The mock trial team at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School made it to the final Suffolk County round, for the second year in a row, at the end of March. After the heated competition, the team placed third in the county. Previously to this final round, the school’s team had made the final 16

competitors countywide. The New York State Mock Trial is an educational program that gives students the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about civil and criminal law, courtroom procedures and to improve proficiency in basic life skills like listening, speaking and reasoning.

“The students on this team work and thrive together, learning how very capable they are of doing anything they put their minds to,” said club advisor Megan Gieser. “And I’m excited to see them continue to grow these important life-skills through mock trial.”

Civil rights activist Ruby Bridges visited students at Northport High School to share her story on April 17th. Mrs. Bridges was the first African-American child to desegregate an all-white elementary school in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis in 1960, and has been a lifelong activist for racial equality. Students had the opportunity to hear her firsthand experiences of living through that time in American history. The presentation began from the test she took to get into

a white school at six years old, all the way through her present life. “It’s extremely important for students to understand, especially in light of all that’s been happening in the past few years, how the era of civil rights relates to their lives now,” said Mrs. Bridges. “Racism is still alive and just as dangerous as it was back then, but most kids don’t even realize it.” After the presentation, students were able to ask Mrs. Bridges questions, such as “What was the rest of your schooling like” and

“How did you feel when you started to understand racial issues as a child?” Students were engaged and honored to listen and to meet Mrs. Bridges. “Regardless of what happens to you, it’s important to take that experience and turn it into something positive,” said Mrs. Bridges. “Even though I went through a lot of hardship, I’m sharing my experiences to spread awareness to help extinguish the racism that’s present in our nation.” Northport High School hosted Law Day, an island-wide mock trial competition, on April 19th. Teams from across Long Island competed against other schools in tournament-fashion, with the final two teams progressing to a court final. Mock-trial teams were

assigned court-room roles, presented with cases they had no prior knowledge of, and were given 10 minutes to prepare to defend their position. Local attorneys and judges volunteered for the competition as well, judging each case and giving constructive feedback. Students impressively tackled tough

cases revolving around themes such as negligence, products liability and more. “This program gives students a jump-start on developing many skills they’ll need in their professional career,” said Dave Scott, the head of Northport’s mock trial program. “They learn that team work is a huge part of success, public speaking and advocacy skills are sharpened, and they learn to apply the laws they’ve learned to real life problems.” All teams gave their best efforts, and one of Northport’s three teams, composed of students Nicholas Scalisi, Maggie Dowling, Erika RamosPinto and Hayley Hayden, secured a semifinal finish. Granting Wishes Hundreds of people congregated on the Harborfields High School track on April 21st to walk for a special cause, as they worked together to help grant two special boys’ wishes during the third annual Walk for a Wish, which was a joint venture with Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County. The event, which was sponsored by Washington Drive Primary School, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and both schools’ PTAs, was a rousing success, as participants helped

raise more than $6,000 according to the event website, which can be found at http://site.wish. org/goto/harborfieldscsd. These funds go toward granting the dreams of two Make-A-Wish children, including 7-year-old Landen, a Port Jefferson resident who’s battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who’s wish is to go to Ocean City, Maryland; and 15-year-old Joe from East Northport, who battles bronchiectasis, an incurable respiratory disease. Joe wishes to go to Walt Disney World,

where he hopes to meet his favorite character, Buzz Lightyear. Non-perishable food items were also collected to be donated to the Harborfields Food Pantry. “I continue to be amazed by the tremendous character that’s shown by our students, staff and the residents of this tight-knit community,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni said. “Coming together to support such a worthy cause really shows you what Harborfields is all about.”

Planting Pines In honor of Earth Day, two fifth-grade classes at Thomas J. Lahey in the Harborfields Central School District have been devoting their efforts towards reforestation. Teachers Karen Kunkle and Augustino Rettino purchased baby whitepine trees for their students. The money used to purchase the trees was

a result of the student’s personal donations that have been accumulating since September. Students were able to take them home on April 19th. Students were excited to give back to the environment, and to have a very personal role in helping with reforestation. “It’s really important to take care of the earth,”

said Olivia, a student in Mr. Rettino’s class. “And because of all the pollution, planting trees to make oxygen will help our world!” In addition to addressing reforestation, students have been regularly recycling since the beginning of the year.

A Handle on Safety Little members of the local community with an affinity for bike riding attended a bike rodeo GRANTING WISHES - Students, staff members and visitors walked around the hosted by the Harborfields track and helped raise money during the annual Walk for a Wish at Harborfields High High School Interact Club School on April 21st. After checking in, children received a tire pressure check by a professional from Bicycle Playground, and were shown by student

volunteers from the Interact Club how to properly fasten their helmets. Then volunteers divided the children into groups, exhibiting the important aspects of bike safety at six different stations. Real life situations were simulated such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using hand signals to notify drivers of their direction, left and right turns, stopping at a stop sign and more. There were nine

stations for the children to traverse in total. “We aim to put together events that will benefit the community,” said Lorraine Mantinello, the Interact Club advisor, “and that also get our students to step up and be leaders.” Local businesses, including Greenlawn Hardware, the Bike Cave and Bicycle Playground, donated time and materials, helping make this event possible.
