Mather Memorial Hospital’s 29th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 2nd with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The award is given to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. IRA has since 1990 generously supported various hospital events including the Golf Classic, Fortunato Breast Health Center and One Enchanted

patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Fewer than 400 hospitals worldwide have earned Magnet® designation. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dessert and a raffle drawing takes place at 7 p.m. The golf entry fee is $500 per person or $2,000 per foursome. Take a stroll in the park, stick your toes in the ocean, have a picnic in the grass – anything to enjoy the great outdoors. Baseball season is underway, summer concert season is right

around the corner and miles of sandy beaches beckon just over the horizon. But Spring is here now! Enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer before the thermometer hits 90º and everyone runs back inside to their air conditioners – a different sort of hibernation. impressed with their version of “Let It Go” from the movie “Frozen,” sung in Italian, while another group sang “La Bamba” in Spanish. To conclude the event, all eighth-grade students enrolled in the Spanish program performed a variety of songs on the panpipe, an instrument common in Central and

South America. Under the direction of musician, historian and teacher Pepe Santana, the students learned how to play the panpipe prior to the foreign language celebration. The students even learned about a panpipe’s flow of air in their science classes, contributing to an interdisciplinary lesson.

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland flooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

Fundraising Campaign Members of the National Junior Honor Society at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently completed their threeweek Pennies For Patients campaign.

The students created a March Madness competition among the lunch sections to see who could raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As a school, the students

set a goal of collecting $2,000. They surpassed this amount by raising $2,600. In celebration of their efforts and accomplishment, the students were treated to a pizza party.

An Eagle Court of Honor celebrating the achievement of James Ryan, Boy Scout Troop 125’s 94th Eagle Scout, was held on April 12th at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, James refurbished the Fellowship Hall of the Commack United Methodist Church (CUMC). The walls and doors were bleached and painted in the main area, restrooms and hallways, all trim throughout the areas were also painted, water damaged ceiling tiles were removed and replaced, and molding and fresh carpeting was installed on the eight supporting columns. Extra effort was not only made to protect the Boy Scout Mural but it was touched up as well. “The Fellowship Hall serves the community for other charitable and outreach programs in

addition to being the sponsor for Troop 125. This was a great way to say thank you to CUMC!,” says James. James began scouting in the first grade as a Tiger Scout with Cub Scout Pack 329 and continued through fifth grade as a Webelos where he went on to earn the Arrow of Light, the only badge earned as a Cub Scout that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform. He joined Boy Scout Troop 125 in 2007 and he enjoyed many years of experiences on an array of trips and adventures including a high adventure trip to the Florida National Sea Base in the Florida Keys. James also held several leadership positions including senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, troop guide, den chief and chaplain’s aide. He earned a total of 37 merit badges, the World Conservation Award and the Catholic

religious emblem, Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God). He is also a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Scouting Honor Camping Society. A senior at Commack High School, James is an active member of the camera club and is currently deciding between several colleges where he plans to major in marine affairs. James reflected, “Scouting helped shape my character and my concern for the world around me, nature and other people. I believe that the Boy Scout program produces future leaders and outstanding, compassionate citizens.” The new Eagle Scout is the son of Marilyn and Christopher Ryan and brother of Troop 125 Eagle Scout Sean (#86 - 2011), Troop 125 Star Scout Matthew and Celia all of whom reside in Smithtown.

Crisis Center Honored Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) Executive Director Linda Leonard was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala earlier this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Leonard represented the LICC, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “The Long Island Crisis Center is guided by the highest professional and ethical standards and infused with a rigorous commitment to excellence,” wrote the

center’s award nominator. “The center helps the most marginalized and disenfranchised populations find their voice, advocating with and for them. The LICC is willing to take risks, both politically and financially, so that all people have equal and appropriate services available to them.” When it began in 1971, the Long Island Crisis Center was a single-phoneline suicide prevention hotline. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed around-the-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island agencies. In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly

drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21. LICC also offers extensive outreach to Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student and teacher interaction. Topics are age-appropriate and carefully scripted, and include suicide prevention and awareness, anger management, understanding selfinjury, the dangers of cyberbullying, u n d e r s t a n d i n g homophobia and transphobia, and adolescent depression. As of last school year, more than 13,000 students and educators participated in the program. The center offers free, high-quality, confidential programs and services to support and empower Long Islanders at critical times in their lives, based on a series of core values that include timeliness, integrity, respect, transparency, empowerment and innovation. And the center has gone a long way to making that last value work for all the others. The LICC was the recipient of the Innovation Award by the 1st Annual Long Island Imagine Awards, for implementing technology to bring its life-saving services to as many people as possible. Air Show Set To Take Off who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Jeff Boerboon, a U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Champion, will pilot the Screamin’ Sasquatch.
