Students and staff members participated as performers and volunteers, paying homage to their friend while honoring his life through music. Student Tom Priest spearheaded the concert with the help of Director of Bands Vickie Henson. Proceeds benefitted the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund.

The Harborfields Central School District is proud to recognize Harborfields physical educators and sisters Kathleen Taylor and Christine Collins for being honored by their individual colleges for their exceptional athletic performances in the women’s lacrosse programs. On April 12th, Washington Drive Primary School physical education teacher Taylor was among eight Hofstra alumni who were inducted into the Hofstra University Athletic Hall of Fame. Taylor was a member of the women’s lacrosse program from 1998-01 and is one of seven Pride players to earn the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America honor. Among other athletic recognitions, Taylor ranks second all-

time in the history of Hofstra women’s lacrosse in assists, sixth in goals and fourth in points. “Kathleen is an outstanding educator and role model in every aspect,” said Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Medical/ Nurse Services John Valente. “This honor is befitting of an outstanding professional who has made a profound impression and lasting legacy to be inducted into her college’s athletic hall of fame.” For the first time in the history of women’s lacrosse at the University of North Carolina, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School physical education teacher Collins is one of two players to have their jerseys honored by the Tar Heels women’s lacrosse team. While the jersey numbers will remain

active, Collins’s jersey will be displayed in the team’s locker room. As a Tar Heels player, Collins was a midfielder and cocaptain in 2002, capturing the college’s only Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. During halftime of a Tar Heels game against Syracuse in Fetzer Field on April 11th, Collins along with former teammate Kellie Thompson, were honored. “Christine was a physical force, who played with passion and fearlessness,” said Tar Heels head coach Jenny Levy. “Besides her on-field accolades, Christine’s tremendous work ethic, toughness and commitment to team are qualities that we continue to value and use as cornerstones for our program.”

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Army Pvt. Michael K. Clarke has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and received instruction and

practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first

aid, foot marches and field training exercises. Clarke is the son of Susan V. Codner of Huntington. He is a 2013 graduate of Walt Whitman High School, Huntington Station.

The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. It was a special night to remember for twenty-two Northport High School Tour Choir members as they had an amazing opportunity to perform two pieces on stage with Broadway legend and Northport High School graduate Patti LuPone. LuPone is a two-time Grammy Award winner and two-time Tony Award winner. The performance, “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda,” took place at the Patchogue Theatre on April 18th, which featured songs from musicals which she could have played, should have played, did play and will play. “Singing with Patti LuPone was…so surreal,” said student Mackenzie Germain. “I couldn’t believe I was sharing the stage with a Broadway star who graduated from my high school. Musical theatre is something I want to pursue, so it was really an experience I will

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School hosted a benefit concert in loving memory of Sean Urda, a student who sadly passed away earlier this year. Students and staff members participated as performers and volunteers at the event, paying homage to their beloved friend while honoring his life through music. Student Tom Priest spearheaded the concert with the help of Director of Bands Vickie Henson. Students, faculty members and coaches sold T-shirts and tickets, with proceeds benefitting the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund. Sean’s

parents, Gary and Nicole, were among the audience members who came out to hear the meaningful tribute. “The outpouring of love and support for our family is beyond words,” Mr. Urda stated. “This community has gone above and beyond on everything and we are very grateful.” Interim Principal Dr. James Ruck and teacher Joseph Pushee welcomed guests and thanked all who were involved in coordinating a successful evening. Mr. Pushee introduced the featured musicians, as well as students who read famous quotes and other written

excerpts in between the vocal and instrumental pieces. Group ensembles in the spotlight were Knightjazz, the Airport Wheelchair band made up of faculty members and Acappelwood. Students Kelsey Hackett and Kerri Donnellan performed as a duo, and Matt Henningsen and Nick Bouzas shared individual numbers. Two songs presented by Thomas Priest, Andrew Katz and Justin Starr concluded the show, at which time members of the audience switched on LED light candles and illuminated the entire room.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School art students Nina Koscica, Olivia Prohaske, Katherine McVetty and Emily Spooner were among a select group of 128 Advanced Placement high school students to have their artwork displayed at the eighth annual Art League of Long Island’s “Go Ape” Art Exhibit held at the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills. The Art League of Long Island’s “Go Ape” exhibit celebrates the exceptional artwork, as selected by

their teachers, of Advanced Placement high school art students in Nassau and Suffolk County. Students from 36 high schools had the opportunity to showcase their artwork, appearing in the forms of paintings, drawings, sculptures, mixed media, digital art, computer graphics, photography and printmaking. In late-March, an awards reception was held to honor the outstanding work created in each two and three-dimensional content area. Serving as

the exhibit juror, owner and curator of the Ripe Art Gallery of Huntington Cherie Via Rexer had the task of selecting the award-winning artworks. Elwood’s Nina Koscica was among a group of ten student artists who received an Award of Excellence, recognized for her untitled acrylic art piece. The district extends its congratulations to these talented students for representing their school at the art exhibit.

Children Helping Children Students in Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently participated in St. Jude’s Math-a-thon Fundraiser to benefit children battling cancer and other terminal diseases at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Participation in the fundraiser allowed students to practice and develop their math skills while contributing to help

support medical treatments for sick children. Students completed numerous math equations and solicited donations based on the number of problems they solved or donations for their participation in the math-a-thon. Spearheaded by Thomas J. Lahey Elementary teacher Augustino Rettino, the school collectively raised a total of $3,008.25, which helped cover the cost of two days of chemotherapy.

Harborfields High School has been named to The Washington Post’s annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the United States. In this year’s Challenge Index, Harborfields High School is ranked No. 2 in Suffolk County, No. 12 on Long Island, No. 24 in New York State and No. 302 in the nation. In order to calculate an index score for each school, researchers take the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International

Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide it by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. Public schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.00, meaning they had as many tests in 2014 as they had graduates, were put on the national list. Schools are ranked in order of ratio. Only 11 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools managed to reach the standard and earn placement on the list. “This ranking is a testament to the hard

work of everyone here at Harborfields, with special recognition for our teachers and our community,” said high school Principal Dr. Rory Manning. “Our students challenge themselves with the most rigorous classes because they know that the special person in front of the room will be there for them and lead them to success. We also know that support for our educational achievements begins at home. Our school would not be the quality school that it is without the support of our parents.”

LAX Benefit In honor of Sean Urda, an Elwood-John H. Glenn High School student who recently passed away, the Elwood Union Free School District hosted the second annual “Elwood Classic” Lacrosse Tournament on April 11th with all proceeds benefiting the Urda family along with two other Elwood families that suffered tragedies this year. Sponsored by K&J Athletics, a not-for-profit organization dedicated

to the development of young athletes, the event featured Elwood girls and boys grades 2-8 teams competing against each other in several games of lacrosse. Coordinated by Kevin Lavey, Jonathan Guercio, Darren Szokoli and Jordan Endler, entrance into the tournament required a team fee of $600, although all teams, regardless of the fee, were able to participate.

Festival Of Arts To memorialize Urda, a poster board with his high school jersey and photos was displayed at the tournament. Elwood lacrosse players were welcomed to sign the poster with their name and jersey number. “The Elwood Classic was an amazing day for lacrosse and for members of the Elwood community,” said Guercio.

To celebrate the artistic talents of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students, the school hosted a “Festival of the Arts” on April 15th where students showcased their various art, music and dance abilities.

To begin the evening, members of the community had the opportunity to admire two-dimensional artwork displayed on the hallway walls by students in grades 9-12. At 7:30 p.m., all attendees were invited into the auditorium

to watch student performances from the mixed chorus and concert choir, honors ensemble, chamber strings, flute, brass, percussion and jazz ensembles, step team, kick line and more.

Woman Of Distinction Legislator Steve Stern honored Elwood resident Rosemarie Kluepfel who was recently named the “Suffolk County Woman of Distinction,” the highest honor bestowed upon a female volunteer in Suffolk County, for her untiring efforts to serve our veterans. Ms. Kluepfel was chosen as the award recipient out of all 18 outstanding individuals who were honored by their local legislators. Ms. Kluepfel was recognized as the 16th Legislative District’s “Woman of Distinction” for her unparalleled work with and for our former service members. After careful review of all 18 honorees, she was chosen as by the Women’s Advisory Commission as the overall “Suffolk County Woman of Distinction” winner. A long-time volunteer, Rosemarie has dedicated herself to those who have served our great nation. She regularly volunteers her time at the Northport VA Medical Center, assisting with food distribution for homeless veterans and speaking with residents at the VA to help them with the difficulties they face. Her most recent contribution to our veterans is through her leadership of the Fairway Foundation, the 501(c)(3) arm of the mortgage corporation, in which 100-percent of all proceeds raised goes to providing homes for wounded veterans. Rosemarie leads the Long Island efforts of this initiative. Through her skillful leadership, she has raised more

than $30,000 through benefit concerts, comedy shows and door-to-door outreach in order to rebuild two homes to meet the needs of two wounded Long Island veterans. Long Island Heart Ball The American Heart Association’s Long Island Annual Heart Ball will be celebrating its 52nd year on Friday, May 8th, at a new venue: the Museum of American Armor – Old Bethpage Restoration Village. Teacher Grants At the Elwood Union Free School District’s April Board of Education meeting, the Elwood Education Endowment (EEE) organization awarded 16 teacher grants in the amount of more than $34,000 to benefit all four schools in the district in the areas of art, literacy, math, music and technology. During the meeting, EEE President Kathleen Koster and Vice President Janine Kuroda shared information about each grant and presented teachers who applied for

the grant with a certificate. Some of the grants this year include the addition of 22 Chromebooks to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, an on-site interactive math museum called “The Math Midway2 Go Exhibit” for Elwood Middle School, six webcams throughout the district for videoconferencing with the global community, and “What’s in the bag,” 50 independent study bags for Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate schools. Since its inception in 2004, the EEE organization

has worked to preserve and expand the educational programs offered by the district. Through its fundraising efforts, the EEE awards teacher grants to augment additional opportunities beyond the core curriculum that are not covered by the district’s budget. “The programs the educators of our district proposed will touch and improve the educational experience of all the students in Elwood,” said Koster.

Solomon Choi, a cellist from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, was selected from a pool of more than 11,000 applicants nationwide to be one of 787 talented students named a 2015 National YoungArts Foundation winner. To enter the competition, Choi had to complete an online application and submit an audition recording. As a

goal by 2020 is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20%, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20%. Why? Life is Why!
