ne of the ﬁrst steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year.

While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting

Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed.

Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that

will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) joined enthusiastic Half Hollow Hills (HHH) School District students, parents, teachers and board members in honoring National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists and many student athletes at the District’s March board meeting, the first in person recognition of students in more than two years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. At the meeting held on March 21 in the HHH High School East lecture hall in Dix Hills, the district recognized the eight 2022 National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists, with Legislator Donnelly presenting proclamations to Dylan M. D’Agate,

Amir H. Estejab, Chase A. Keskinyan and Alana B. Zinkin. Later in the program, more than two dozen student athletes were honored for their exceptional performances. Among them were members of the Suffolk County Champion High School East Varsity Basketball and Girls Tennis Teams and individual members of the Half Hollow Hills cross country, fencing, girl’s gymnastics, boys and girls swimming and diving and winter indoor track teams. Also honored were HHH Athletic Director Debra Ferry and Certified Athletic Trainer Caitlyn Bucco who administered CPR and used

an AED to aid a community member who went into sudden cardiac arrest at a Hills East basketball game in February. “It was great to be back in person to honor these outstanding students for their academic and athletic triumphs, as well as thank the two staff members who jumped into life-saving action and were instrumental in averting a tragedy,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I applaud them for their achievements, commend them for their dedication and congratulate them on a job well done. All of them bring even more pride to the Half Hollow Hills community.”

Conventional lending refers to when a bank or another ﬁnancial institution loans a home buyer money to buy a home. This is one of the most common ways to fund a home purchase. Personal credit score as well as credit history help determine eligibility and interest rates for conventional loans. Availability of assets as well as income level are some additional determining factors. Conventional loans are traditionally 10-, 15- or 30-year notes and will require a certain percentage as the down payment to secure the loan. The bank will determine the down payment requirement, which is typically somewhere between 3 and 20 percent. FHA loan A Federal Housing Administration loan is issued by an FHA-approved lender. These loans are designed for low-to-moderate-income borrowers, according to the ﬁnancial guide Investopedia. FHA loans require lower

minimum down payments and lower credit scores than many conventional loans. FHA loans also require mortage insurance up front, plus annually for 11 years or the life of the loan depending on the length of the loan. HELOC A Home Equity Line of Credit, commonly called a HELOC loan, borrows against the available equity in your home to create a line of credit, much like a credit card. These funds can be used for large expenses or to consolidate higher-interest rate debt on other loans, according to Bank of America. It may be possible to use a HELOC to secure funding to make improvements to a home for those who want to flip it as an investment property. Private money lenders Individuals investing in real estate who do not intend to use a property as a primary residence may turn to private money lenders. These investors can tap into capital from personal connections and lend at specified interest rates and payback periods, according to Fortune Builders, a real estate investing resource. Keep in mind the interest rate will likely be higher with a private lender than through a conventional lender. The repayment term also will be shorter. VA-backed loan The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a program for acquiring loans through conventional lenders that will be partially guaranteed against loss through the VA. This enables a lender to give better loan terms, such as the option to pay no down payment. Interested parties need to qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility and then work with qualified lenders. People have several options to finance the purchase of a home. These loans can help make the dream of home ownership a reality. Potential buyers are urged to speak with mortgage professionals or financial planners to consider their options.

The real estate experts at Zillow recently reported that the national median price of a home in the United States is $272,446. However, since the National Association of Realtors reported a record low housing inventory late in 2020, the average house price has been rising rapidly nationwide. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the median home sales price at $374,900, and certain states have much higher prices. WOWA, a real estate and finance technology company, says the average sale price of a home in Canada was $679,051 in July 2021.

Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-proﬁt organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island. As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls. The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care ﬁnd permanent homes and connections.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identiﬁcation and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certiﬁcations in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

By providing the best opportunity for successful placement, Hope For Youth also prevents multiple placements. They also emphasize the role that relative and kinship caregivers

play in the child welfare system and helps children and youth stay connected to their family, their community and their cultural roots if they are unable to safely remain at home. The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reuniﬁcation for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families. The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2022 Student Scholarship and “Educator of Note” programs. This year, LIMHoF will award four $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music. Donate To Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously

donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened

and in original packaging.
