Drug Take-Back Day helped organize last year’s efforts in Manhattan as well as this year’s receptacles. “We’ll dispose of a lot more this year as we double the number of Northwell facilities participating. We want to do everything we can to keep these drugs from falling in to the wrong hands. This is a hugely important community service we’re proud to provide.” Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experiment with opiates or other drugs. Northwell Health has made one of its missions to help curb the opioid epidemic in New York State through its Northwell Health Opioid Management Steering Committee, which is an outgrowth of the successful pilot program at Southside Hospital. There were 2,726 deaths related to opioids in New York State in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. New York City saw 893 of those deaths; there were 463 more on Long Island. “Hearing these staggering numbers each year breaks my heart and has prompted us at Northwell Health to aggressively work in a variety of ways to try to lessen the amount of opiate and prescription drug abuse in our area,” said

Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, assistant vice president of addiction services at Northwell Health. “People bringing their unused prescriptions to these sites can help us make an impact on the opioid epidemic.” In addition to removing unused prescriptions drugs from the community, Northwell Health is working on several

initiatives to target opioid abuse from screening and life-saving techniques to offering treatment: Northwell’s screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) program helps identify potential issues by screening patients during routine medical visits. South Oaks Hospital in Amityville offers free naloxone training and

rescue kits to community members. Naloxone, otherwise known as narcan, is a nasal spray that is used when someone has overdosed to try to reverse the situation. Northwell, in conjunction with the Engel Burman Group, are in the process of building a substance abuse treatment residence in Calverton on eastern long Island.

Moving Forward

Problem Solving / Decision Making Many articles, books and seminars have covered this subject. In addition, some local schools offer courses like this as part of their adult education series. This still leaves a large majority of folks who have never been exposed to this topic, who would benefit highly from it. If you are one them, and would like to have a simple, easy-to-use method to solve problems, please read on... In this world of fast-paced living, with all of its daily turbulence, we are faced with a dizzying array of problems and challenges that need to be addressed in a short period of time. To name a few: • A host of money problems, including how much you spend within your budget and what adjustments might need to be made. • What to buy for a really good friend, but one with very expensive taste. • Whether now is a good time to make a major purchase, such as a house or even a new car. The following is a step-by-step procedure on how to solve problems and improve your decision making process. Before proceeding, I must caution you to leave your emotions behind (not an easy

task when faced with certain decisions that are near and dear to your heart). Let’s begin with each step in the sequence: Identify the problem. We need a new roof, but are not sure how to proceed. Should we buy now or wait? List possible decision factors. How long will the current one last? What will a new roof cost? Which models are now on sale? Check warranties on each. What store should we buy it in? Check any special credit terms. Develop alternative solutions. The current roof is beginning to have small leaks developing. There are several models on sale now in a wide price range. A blackcolored roof is always the least expensive, but several other colors are very nice and cost approximately 15% more. We have checked out several appliance stores and, while prices vary slightly among them, if possible, we would like to stay with the appliance store we have dealt with previously. All of the models have a oneyear warranty on parts and labor. The store we have always dealt with has offered a special credit deal with no interest due for the first 18 months. The other store (our second choice) has already stated that, if

we buy from him, we would probably “get a better deal.” Narrow your options. Clearly, additional follow-up was needed. We went back to the first dealer, who gave us a 10% discount on the roof tiles and offered us the colored roof tiles at no additional cost. The only problem was that he could not install the roofing for another three weeks. We went back to our second choice dealer, who could install in two days but made no further concessions. A decision was clearly needed. Finding the right solution. We ended up selecting the first dealer. Although he could not install our roofing tiles for three weeks, he was going to give us an additional cash discount and a special credit deal. This, plus the fact that we had dealt with him before, closed the sale. The second dealer’s offer was tempting, especially the two-day delivery, but we did not take it. As you have seen, having an organized flow of guidelines to follow when making decisions is crucial to saving time and effort. Nine Northwell Health facilities will be participating in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28th, which is an opportunity for people to take unused and expired prescriptions and safely remove them from their homes. Southside Hospital in Bay Shore; Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead; Huntington Hospital; North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset; Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park; Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco; Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow; and Lenox Hill Hospital and Lenox Health Greenwich Village in Manhattan will have receptacles at the hospitals for people to safely deposit these leftover prescriptions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Northwell Health collected more than 300 pounds of unused prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day last October. The latest event is organized by the Drug Enforcement Association. “It was so gratifying to see the large quantity of unneeded and expired drugs brought to Northwell Health facilities last drug take back day in October,” said Peg Butler, Northwell Health’s assistant vice president of marketing and external relations who

Mother’s Day Ceremony On Saturday, May 12th, Angela’s House will be sponsoring a Mother’s Day Ceremony at the Angel of Hope Statue in Eisenhower Park, located in East Meadow. Patty Furino will lead attendees in a half hour ceremony, beginning at 10 a.m., which will include reflections from a fellow parent, a guided meditation and a prayer. The Willow Interfaith Women’s Choir, Long Island Children’s Choir and the New Apostolic Church Choirs will serenade those present with songs specially chosen to lift the heart and commemorate the children whose lives tragically ended too soon. In addition, students from The SPARK Program of Bayside High School will be offering their compassion by creating a ‘Hugs Stand’ for those who seek the embrace. This group has also fundraised to gift the attendees with inspirational ‘messages in a bottle’ necklaces. This ceremony is for anyone who would like to take a moment and remember the life of a child who has left this Earth too soon. All are welcome. Of Weddings & Wandering off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship. The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton. Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship. She spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at

Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club. Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement or their own ﬁnancial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their ﬁrst paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer.

But others, such as 401(k) retirement plans, have no such limits. Men and women can examine their spending habits in an effort to ﬁnd areas where they can cut back on nonessential expenses, such

as cable television subscriptions and dining out. Any money saved each month can then be redirected into savings and/or retirement accounts. Reconsider your retirement date. Deciding to work past the age of 65 is another way men and women over 50 can save more for retirement. Many professionals now continue working past the age of 65 for a variety of reasons. Some may suspect they’ll grow bored in retirement, while others may keep working out of ﬁnancial need. Others may simply love their jobs and want to keep going until their passion runs out. Regardless of the reason, working past the age of 65 allows men and women to keep earning and saving for retirement, while also delaying the ﬁrst withdrawal from their retirement savings accounts.

TRI-VILLAGE OPENING DAY - Legislator Susan A. Berland and fellow elected officials attended the opening day parade and ceremony for the Tri-Village Little League.

“And they’re off!” Racing six small wooden vehicles on the speciallyfitted track in each heat, 85 hand-crafted Pinewood Derby cars were in the competitions at the Annual Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America)’s district-wide runoff event held in the gym of the John Glenn High School in Elwood on April 14th. The cars had to be made by the boys (and parents could assist) in shaping and decorating the 5-ounce block of wood contained in the Pinewood Derby Car Kit. The 7- to 10-year-olds who were taking part in the District-wide event had previously raced their cars in the individual Cub Scout Pack’s race. The top four winners from each of the Cub Scout Packs in the Matinecock District (which encompasses Western Smithtown and all of the Town of Huntington) were eligible to take part in this event. With friends, parents, and volunteer scouting adults from the Pack and the Scout District to cheer them on, matrix style races were held for the 85 Tigers, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts and their cars. The top ten winners received trophies, and each participant received a commemorative patch. Some of the students read prepared statements in “testifying” before the Youth Council, while others joined in the discussion after hearing comments that had been entered into the record. At some points, the Youth Council asked for a show-of-hands vote to gauge audience sentiment. Witnessing the proceedings were parents and some school district administrators. “This year’s Forum demonstrated that our high school students are well-informed about major issues facing the community, have formulated opinions about possible courses of action and are passionate about their beliefs,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “As moderated by the Youth Council members, the Forum produced a level of discourse that

would do any public hearing proud. Thank you to the Youth Council for your efforts and to parents and school administrators for spreading the word and encouraging participation.” The session was recorded for broadcast on the Town’s government access television channels (18 Optimum, 38 FiOS). Celebration of Expression Northport Highs School’s dance program held its sixth annual International Baccalaureate (IB) Dance Showcase on March 26th. The evening featured performances by students in IB Dance classes, Advanced Dance Classes, members of the Tigerette Dance team, and the Northport and East Northport Middle School kicklines. In addition, students from the high school’s Dance Intramurals also participated. Earlier in the year, these students taught third, fourth and fifth graders from Pulaski Road Elementary School and Ocean Avenue Elementary School dances that were based on their classroom curriculum. Participating students ranged from first-time

performers to those aspiring to dance at the collegiate level. All of the pieces presented were completely student conceived, choreographed and directed. Throughout the evening, the celebration of student expression was the unifying factor. The studentchoreographed pieces were tackled within the IB Dance, Advanced Dance or Tigerettes Dance classes. The pieces explored themes like depression, anxiety and celebration of culture. Additionally, different forms of movement were explored through each piece. Leading up to the performance, students explored different improvisational exercises and discovered inspiration

to generate movement, applying choreographic devices, structure and forms to create their dances. Students involved in Dance Intramurals used the third, fourth and fifth-grade curriculum to generate movements for their dances. The dance classes at Northport High School are a place where students create, participate in and reflect upon dance forms and styles from a range of cultures and traditions, both familiar and unfamiliar. Classes provide a way for students to express themselves in a safe and healthy environment and the IB Dance Showcase is a venue for student choreographers to share their works with the community.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

High school students from across the Town of Huntington voiced their opinions April 10th on three issues that have been the subject of recent community debate, as they participated in the annual Youth Forum sponsored by Councilwoman Joan Cergol and the Huntington Youth Council. About 75 students attended the event, which mirrors the procedures at a Town Board public hearing. The Youth Council, with its officers presiding, held three public hearings: on whether a fee should be imposed, as Suffolk County recently enacted, on plastic bags at retail stores and on who should benefit from the fee charged for the bags; on what measures can be implemented to keep schools safe, ranging from requiring students to display identification badges to having metal detectors and armed security personnel; and on possible responses to stem the vaping epidemic in schools. Enriching Learning Nine Elwood Union Free School District faculty members and administration were recognized by the Board of Education for the grants awarded to them by the Elwood Education Endowment (EEE) for the 2017-2018 school year on April 12th. After an in-depth application and evaluation process, just over $47,000 in total was donated to benefit all four buildings throughout the district. Since the endowments inception, the organization has donated over a half of a million dollars to the school district. “We have continued to work hard to support the educational programs and

ideas of our educators,” said EEE President Deena Purow, “and we are repeatedly impressed by the efforts of the teachers and administrators of Elwood, and their mission to enrich the education of our students.” Through the initiative of faculty and administration, the literacy, music, science and STEM curriculums are being enhanced by grant funding. Additionally, the grants also will be helping expand the district’s flexible learning spaces. Faculty members Krista Albrecht, Keri Barozie, Donna Fife, Meahan Geiser, Karen Gellert, Richard Greening, Liz Held, Vickie Henson, Jason Joiner, Dr. Arnold

Kamhi, Jessica Kennedy, Rachel Nagel, Renee Spanos, Maria Trucios, and administration members Pamela Fine and Eileen Kelly-Gorman, were crucial in conceiving the ideas for these enhancements, and in completing the grant application process, and all were applauded and thanked by the board. “This support provided to our students and faculty is priceless,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “The funds raised to support these programs and initiatives will truly bring exceptional opportunities to our students, and will continue to benefit students for years to come.”

Tigers Power Up The Northport High School Cyberian Tigers, the school’s robotics team, competed in the FIRST Robotics Long Island Regional Event at Hofstra University. The event took place for three days, and the team reached the semifinals with a record of 9-7-0 and a rank of 13 out of 35 teams. Participating students spent six weeks building their robots to

compete. The competition included two games played by six robots split between red and blue alliances. Students programmed their robotos for autonomous operation in addition to being controled remotely. Competition rounds took place on a uniquely designed playing field. Judges measured the

effectiveness of each robot as well as the collaborative efforts and determination of the students. Awards are presented for design, technology, theme and sportsmanship. In this year’s retro themed game, alliances of three robots had to move crates, called Power Cubes, onto scales. The alliances are scored based on how long they can keep control of the scales.
