April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the ﬁrst time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path.

Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Make-A-Wish The rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance on April 13 for the 13th annual Walk for a Wish event on the track of Harborfields High School. Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, hundreds of people showed up to support Frank, who’s been battling a life-threatening illness and his dream is to go to Atlantis in the Bahamas. Not only did the Harborfields community raise the appropriate amount to grant Frank’s wish, but the grand total has eclipsed $19,000, which will allow the event to grant another wish as well. Third grader Becky Pashman was one of many students who went the extra mile to help someone in need. She, along with her sister and parents, used

a kit to make bracelets with inspirational words and messages on them. Then, along with friends who made cupcakes, they had a stand where the bracelets and tasty treats were sold. All in all, the effort raised $100. “I wanted it to go to good use,” she said of the bracelets. “I thought this was a good way to raise money for Walk for a Wish.” Sixth graders Lea Jaffe and Kasey Wrede coordinated a bake sale, which collected more than $700. “It’s really important to raise this money for those who truly need it,” Jaffe said. “We were happy we could do our part to help.” Fifth grader Erin Lindqvist had a lemonade and iced tea stand, and she was able to raise $180 as

well. “I’m happy he’s able to go where he wants to go,” she said. “It just makes me smile to know we did great!” Alexis Alpert, who now works for Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County, had her wish granted in 2005, and she went to Disney World. She was in attendance to see all of the fantastic work that was done to raise money for such a great cause. “It just shows how the support of such a wonderful community can bring such inspiration and such life. It’s making such a difference,” she said. “It’s people like those here today and everyone participating over the past few months that help us grant these wishes.”

Harborfields High School students interested in pursuing the field of education have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience through the Future Educators Club. Each student involved is placed in a classroom at the elementary school level. Once a week, students visit their assigned classroom teachers and assist with lessons, as well as working with the

younger students one-onone. High school students can be found confidently leading younger St in concepts like elapsed time, parts of speech, and more, throughout the district on a weekly basis. At the club’s monthly meeting, involved students come together to meet to discuss teaching strategies and share classroom experiences. Senior Brooke Semmelmeier, the club’s

president, has been a Future Educator since she was a sophomore and has known she wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. Mock Trial Competition Trial Tournament is set up as a “competition,” emphasis is placed on the educational aspect of the experience which focuses on the preparation and presentation of a hypothetical courtroom trial that involves critical issues that are important and interesting to young people. High school teams from public and nonpublic schools participate in the tournament, beginning at the county level. In tournament competition, the teams argue both sides of the case and assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses. Judges, usually local judges or attorneys, score the teams based on a rating sheet that includes scoring on preparation, performance, and professionalism. The highest scoring team from County Tournaments proceeds to the Regional Competition to perform

the Mock Trial against other county winners. The top team from each of New York State’s eight regions is then invited to attend and participate in the State Finals. The tournament encompasses the valuable lessons of ethics, civility and professionalism; furthers students’ understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system; improves proficiency in basic life skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning; promotes better communication and cooperation among the school community, teachers and students and members of the legal profession, and; heightens appreciation for academic studies and stimulates interest in law-related careers.

Coders “Hackathon” A team of eight cognizant coders from Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District competed in a “hackathon” held at Mineola Middle School on April 9. The OYO Hackathon, or Code Conquest, drew 10 Long Island teams to compete in a series of sprint-like coding rounds. This event was held in collaboration with kidOYO, which is an

educational platform used to teach students creative computing. These rounds, tracked on large monitors for everyone to see, required team members to work together to correctly code projects to conquer territories on a shared map. Oldfield Middle’s team came in fourth place but are determined to return next year to take

the gold. “Our students are so interested in sharpening and mastering the computer science skills that they learn in the classroom,” said Oldfield Middle School teacher Drew Lockwood. “And they continue to impress me daily with how quickly they’re advancing.”

Having Each Other’s Backs To continue building a climate of kindness and acceptance at school, the Northport Middle School Community Service Club worked together to get their peers thinking about what it means to show respect, compassion and tolerance towards one another on April 9. In partnership with the No Place for Hate Initiative, students came up with the idea to beautify their school with positivity when they were talking candidly at one of their weekly meetings. Students decided to paint the words respect, compassion and tolerance on three separate canvases and to

invite students from each grade level to write what those words mean. That way, their peers would actively be thinking about kindness. “Many students have vocalized that middle school is a lot harder, emotionally, than elementary school,” said Danielle Cardinale, one of the club’s advisers. “And they came up with this idea while talking about how to encourage and remind everyone to be kind on a daily basis.” During each lunch period, students were invited to come down to the art room and add to the grade-level’s canvas.

Many students were lost in thoughtful contemplation as they added to each canvas, including song lyrics, quotes and photos along with original thoughts. When completed, canvases will be hung in the cafeteria. “Compassion can be having other people’s backs and helping them get back up after getting knocked down by life,” said Northport Middle School seventh grader Winnie. “And it’s so important to remember sometimes you really have no idea what someone else is going through.”

Through Northport High School’s Family and Consumer Science department, students have the unique opportunity to work with toddlers and experience childdevelopment firsthand. The program affords students with tactile interaction with children twice a week, witnessing their classroom-learned knowledge come to life. For one semester, students enrolled in Family Dynamics are paired with a toddler in order to

observe the physical, social and emotional growth of the child. On a rotating schedule, students plan the day’s activities, arts and crafts, and “circle-time” for the children to comfortably transition leaving the classroom. At the end of each week, students record how they’ve watched the child grow and develop by way of motor skills, vocabulary, and more. “They understand a lot more than I expected,” said Chris, a senior in the program. “My toddler only

knew a few words in the beginning and know he knows so much more. It’s crazy how fast they pick things up.” Students involved in the program vary from aspiring future educators, to budding psychologists, to just wanting to be prepared for a future family. “This is definitely the most hands-on class I’ve ever taken,” said Deanna, a junior at NHS. “And I genuinely look forward to each afternoon I get

to spend time with these kids.” If students want to continue on in the program after completing working with toddlers, they’re able to enroll in a Human Development class, where students work with preschool aged children three times a week, taking on more responsibilities and leadership roles in the classroom. “We find that students who go through this program and continue on to pursue professions in
