Vendors are from a variety of services including the Office of Mental Health, local colleges, counseling centers and Nassau BOCES programs. The Adult Career and Continuing Education S e r v i c e s - Vo c a t i o n a l Rehabilitation (ACCESVR) conducted a workshop explaining its vocational rehabilitation and independent living programs as well as how to help eligible individuals with disabilities to obtain employment. “I am amazed at the turnout Nassau BOCES gets and the details of the event are handled well,” exclaimed Julie Yindra, Director of Services for Students with Disabilities at Hofstra University. She presented a workshop on college planning issues and services for students with disabilities. Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information. Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive. There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

Experts at Nassau BOCES Department of Special Education offered parents answers to these questions with its Transition Expo. More than 200 parents of special needs students attended the expo to meet with representatives from

Recruitment Open House The Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department will open its doors to area residents, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community as part of the fourth annual RecruitNY statewide initiative. Over the last several years, it has been very tough for many fire departments throughout New York state to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder numbers so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents.

As part of RecruitNY, on Saturday, April 26th and Sunday, April 27th between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department located at 2 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor will join volunteer fire departments all across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive. Not only will RecruitNY be an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, it will also raise public awareness about the need for volunteers. Throughout the day, the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and firefighter

apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighter gear, and provide activities and stations throughout the firehouse for visitors. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in the fire department. Last year, more than 500 fire departments in 55 counties across the state held recruitment open houses. FASNY is hoping for an even higher turnout this year and encourages departments to RSVP to let the community know they’re participating at: www. recruitny.org/signup. “Come on out and

join us for this unique recruitment day at our firehouse,” said Chief of Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department Robert Hahn. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter. Our current members love what they do; they are everyday heroes who help neighbors in need. We hope our recruitment day will inspire other area residents to join our fire service family.” The goal of RecruitNY is that the collaborative effort among volunteer fire departments statewide will turn the declining number of volunteer firefighters around. RecruitNY is

one example of FASNY’s key initiatives to recruit and retain volunteers. Over the last year and a half, FASNY has worked exceptionally hard to build and deploy a multitiered plan for helping New York state’s more than 1,700 volunteer fire departments recruit more than 15,000 new volunteer firefighters across the state by utilizing federal SAFER grant funds for programs including the “Fire in You” advertising campaign, FASNY HELP community college tuition reimbursement program, and recruitment training classes. Established in 2011, RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association

of the State of New York (FASNY), the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC), Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York. Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Murph Challenge On Memorial Day, May 26th, the 2014 Murph Challenge will take place at CrossFit Bastion, located at 155 East 2nd Street in Huntington Station, starting at 10 a.m. The elder law firm of Tully & Winkelman, P.C. is the event’s main sponsor. The Murph Challenge is an extreme “Hero” workout created by members of the CrossFit community in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a native of Patchogue, New York and Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005 during Operation Red Wings. His life story has been the subject of two books (Seal of Honor and Heart of a Lion) and two films (Murph: The Protector and Lone Survivor). In the Murph Challenge, athletes will run one mile, perform 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 air squats and run one more mile; some athletes will even wear a 20-pound vest or body armor. This was considered to be Lt. Murphy’s favorite workout, which he called “Body Armor.” CrossFit renamed the workout as the ‘Murph’ in honor of the focused warrior

and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is. Daniel Murphy, Lt. Murphy’s father, will be the guest speaker. He will talk about his son and the mission of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Lt. Murphy was an avid reader and his favorite saying was “education will set you free.” The Foundation awards nine scholarships each year: two are awarded to graduates of Michael’s high school, Patchogue-Medford High School; one through the Suffolk Federal Credit Union, where Daniel is a Board Member; one to an attendee at Michael’s alma mater, Penn State University; one is also awarded to a crew member of the USS MICHAEL MURPHY DDG112 and another scholarship is awarded through the Military Order of the Purple Heart to a Combat Wounded Veteran. The final two scholarships are awarded to a cadet of the Lt. Michael Murphy US Naval Sea Cadet Corps based in Sayville, New York and to

a Gold Star Child through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman. The term “CrossFit” is defined as that which optimizes fitness; in essence, it is constantly varied functional movements performed at a relatively high level of intensity. CrossFit also emphasizes a sense of community when people do these workouts together. The company CrossFit provides accredited training seminars throughout the world and free content on workouts, training and support. Its worldwide network reaches more than 5,500 affiliated gyms and more than 35,000 accredited CrossFit Level 1 trainers. Most Challenging Harborfields High School has been named to The Washington Post’s annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools in the United States. In this year’s Challenge Index, Harborfields High School is ranked No. 3 in Suffolk County, No. 13 on Long Island, No. 33 in New York State and No. 387 in the nation. In order to calculate an index score for each school, researchers take the total number of Advanced Placement, I n t e r n a t i o n a l Baccalaureate and Advanced International

Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide it by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. Public schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.00, meaning they had as many tests in 2013 as they had graduates, were put on the national list. Schools are ranked in order of ratio. Only 9 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools managed to reach the standard and earn placement on the list. “This ranking is a testament to the hard

work of everyone here at Harborfields, with special recognition for our teachers and our community,” said high school Principal Dr. Rory Manning. “Our students challenge themselves with the most rigorous classes because they know that the special person in front of the room will be there for them and lead them to success. We also know that support for our educational achievements begins at home. Our school would not be the quality school that it is without the support of our parents.”

Newest Eagle Honoree Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta honored Thomas J. Izzo of Boy Scout Troop 7 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor held at the Sts. James & Philips Church. His Eagle Scout Project was to refurbish the basement in the Old Church of St. James & Philips, where youth groups meetings are held. He cleared everything

out, waterproofed the basement, installed new sheetrock for the walls and ceiling, added molding, spackled and painted the room and refinished the floor. Legislator Trotta said, “I am extremely impressed that Thomas has been so active in his troop and that his parents have also been involved with the Boy Scouts, including his older brother Anthony

His accomplishment has set a high standard of commitment and dedication, which I hope will inspire the youth of our great County of Suffolk.” Legislator Trotta presented Thomas J. Recruitment Fair The Dix Hills Fire Department will open its doors to area residents, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter or EMT in our community as part of the fourth annual RecruitNY statewide initiative. Over the last several years, it has been very difficult for fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Dix Hills Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder membership so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for our community. As part of RecruitNY, on Sunday, April 27th, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Dix Hills Fire

Department located at 115 E. Deer Park Road in Dix Hills, will join volunteer fire departments all across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive. Not only will the Recruitment Fair be an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter or EMT, it will also raise public awareness about the need for volunteers. During the event, the Dix Hills Fire Department will conduct tours of the stations, ambulances and firefighting apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighter gear and provide refreshments. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved

in the fire department. “Come out and join us for this unique recruitment event at our firehouse,” said Ex-Chief and Recruitment Chairman Richard Sorrentino. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter or EMT. Our current members love what they do, they’re everyday heroes who help neighbors in need.
