Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.
Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change. Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public. There is still work to be done, but great progress has been made since 1970.
Fifth Avenue Students Shows Their School Spirit
Students, teachers and staff at Fifth Avenue Elementary School are keeping school spirits up. On March 23, teachers shared photos on Twitter holding signs reading, “We Miss You,” and “Stay Strong.” On March 30, they took those positive
messages one step further and painted them on their car windows and drove through the community. Students waited at the ends of their driveways and waved happily to their favorite teachers and staff as they drove by. Last week, staff
encouraged students to submit photos of themselves and their siblings partaking in school spirit week, complete with pajama day. It was a great way for them to share their school spirit with the community.

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work
with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Students Selected For Peer-Helping Network Harborfields High School students involved in the school’s Natural Helpers group – and veterans of the middle school’s Tornadoes Listening and Caring program – recently visited Oldfield Middle School to congratulate and induct several new members into the program. T.L.C. is a peer-helping network that provides support to middle school students struggling with typical stressors, such as peer relations, conflicts and academic pressures. Students are selected by their peers, who identified them as “caring, trustworthy and responsible.” The students have completed several hours of training where they learn how to identify a peer in need of help, contact resources when problems exceed their limits and selfcare techniques. EMS Students Earn Awards At Science Olympiads Regional Competition
Congratulations to Elwood Middle School’s Science Olympiad team that recently competed in the Suffolk County Regional competition at Candlewood Middle School in Half Hollow Hills. The team of 11 students, grades 6 through 8, along with coaches Mr. Mead and Ms. Tuna, is the first Science Olympiad team at Elwood Middle School in 15 years. The Science Olympiads competed against 37 teams from around Suffolk
County in events such as anatomy, food science, crime busters, heredity, water quality, disease detectives and circuits. By combining events from all disciplines, the competition encourages students to work and communicate collaboratively in active, hands-on STEM challenges. Events range from pencil and paper tests, to laboratory-based practicals, to engineering design events where students build devices,
which are then evaluated during the competition. Though the competition was fierce, students, Ishan Shah and Christopher Sanelli, placed sixth in meteorology and students, Jack Beaudry and Sebastian Garvey, earned tenth place with their “MouseTrap Mobile” design. Students were excited to be part of this competition and look forward to sharing their experiences with future club members.

Northport Early Childhood Program Lottery Open
Northport High School’s Early Childhood Education program has 16 available openings for the 2-Year-Old Toddler Program for the 2020-21 school year. The district will be holding a lottery for Northport-East Northport residents to fill these spots. Each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler
development twice a week. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. In order to qualify for this program, toddlers must be 2 years of age on or before Dec. 31, 2020 and families must be residents of the Northport-East Northport School District. There is no
cost for the program. For interested families, the completed Lottery Application Form is due by April 24. Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. Teachers, staff, students and parents are all learning to adapt to a new educational environment as schools remain closed to help curb the spread of COVID-19. In doing so, each have faced new challenges and stressors. That’s why Elwood-John H. Glenn High School guidance professionals – Carolyn Pollina, Lisa Sallie, Christiana Dobra and Janine Ferrante – hosted the first of what is expected to be several virtual presentations to

discuss coping strategies and mindfulness activities. In the first presentation, the professionals tackled topics including time management, diet and exercise, virtual socialization and, for high school seniors, college decisions. To successfully manage time at home, Ms. Dobra recommended abiding by a schedule with designated time slots for work, homeschooling and relaxation. She reminded
parents to set an alarm, shower, get dressed and even throw on a bit of makeup. To help ease daily anxieties, Ms. Sallie advised students, teachers and parents to limit their intake of COVID-19 related news to an hour per day. Additionally, she recommended that parents confide in a friend or relative and suggested that students reach out to their school social workers or psychologist to help manage daily stressors.
While gyms are closed, Ms. Ferrante reminded individuals that it’s important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. She pointed to outdoor activities like bike riding and walking, and noted that many gyms are even offering online exercise classes. For students, mandated school closures have postponed and canceled many important milestone events. For high school seniors that have not had an
opportunity to visit college campuses, Ms. Pollina explained that many colleges and universities are now offering virtual campus tours. She also reminded students that school counselors are still available to help narrow down their college choices or navigate financial aid. To conclude their presentation, the counselors hosted a Q & A, during which they tackled topics such as regents, Advanced Placement and SAT exams. The team

Congratulations to Northport High School girls varsity basketball coach Richard Castellano and fifthyear varsity player Danielle Pavinelli who recently won Suffolk County Coach and Player of the Year titles. Castellano has been coaching the Lady Tigers for 40 years and, along with earning his fourth Suffolk County Coach of the year title this year, has also been named New York Daily News Coach of the Year two times, BCANY Section Coach of the Year and, in 2017, was inducted into the New York State Coaches Hall of Fame. “Coach Rich Castellano is SUFFOLK COUNTY PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Northport High School girls varsity basketball player Danielle Pavinelli was recently named Suffolk County Player a class act, role model and truly exemplifies what an of the Year. team to win 25 League Championships, 11 County Championships and five Long Island championships. Additionally, the team has made it to state finals and semifinals five times, including this year, which was unfortunately cut short due to mandatory school closures. This year, the Lady Tigers finished the regular season, 22-2, all while following Castellano’s “play as a team” philosophy. “I always think it’s team first. It’s easier to stop one player; it’s very difficult to stop a team,” he said. “That’s the epitome of what we did this year. We’re a family and we’re all in this together.” As one of three team captains, Danielle Pavinelli, often led by example. She said that the bond that her and her teammates share is special. “I owe this award to all my teammates and my coaches.
I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. “The team is so special to me and I’m sad that we couldn’t end it the way we wanted to, but I’m so thankful for the bonds that we have. We became a family.” This season, Danielle was the top point getter and achieved an amazing milestone of scoring her 1,000 point this year. She is also a member of the school’s girls varsity lacrosse team, coached by Carol RainsonRose. After graduation, she plans to continue her passion for sports with a full scholarship to play lacrosse at the University of Florida. Castellano described Danielle as a “team player” with an infectious “refuse to lose” attitude. “She carried the team when she had to, she was emotional when she had to be emotional, she was a coach’s dream in my mind,” he said.

According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, nurses are the second largest group of licensed professionals in the United States. While laws vary depending on where nurses work, many nurses must have their licenses renewed at certain intervals. State boards of nursing, sometimes referred to as “BONs,” were established to oversee and assure the safe practice of nursing in an effort to
protect the public’s health. Part of the responsibilities of a BON is to evaluate licensure applications, and some BONs, depending on the state laws, will handle license renewals as well. The goal of license renewals is to ensure licensed nurses are up to date on the latest best practices and procedures. that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleepdeprived. It also may be
a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. The longer and later one naps, the greater the potential it will interfere with nighttime sleeping or backfire and cause daytime grogginess.
Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.
