the Earth Day spirit.” Among the other attractions are: Medicine Disposal: Thanks to an effort that is co-sponsored by the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, residents will be able to drop off unwanted and unneeded medications, which will be taken by the Suffolk County Police Department for environmentally safe disposal. The Town will also distribute information about the adverse environmental effects on groundwater and Long Island’s drinking water supply when proper protocols are not followed in disposing of pharmaceutical drugs. E-waste Recycling: Covanta is the annual sponsor for the Plug In to E-Cycling event, which gives residents and businesses the opportunity to dispose of obsolete e-waste items such as cell phones, pagers, radios, stereos, computers, laptops, fax machines and televisions. Identity Theft Prevention: Joining again this year will be Safety Shred, one of largest leaders in the on-site document destruction and identity theft prevention giants on Long Island. Plastic Grocery Bag Recycling: Southdown Market Place of Northport will provide the first 200 residents to trade in a plastic grocery bag with a free ecofriendly tote bag, compliments of Southdown Markets. Tree Giveaway: The Town will give one native bareroot tree sapling to the first 250 residents, courtesy of the National Wildlife Federation. Residents who receive a tree will be asked to plant it on their property. The tree saplings will include red oak, white oak and sugar maple. Planting instructions will be included with each tree. The goal of the tree giveaway is not only to better inform residents about proper tree planting and tree benefits, but also to create an interactive map that shows each tree’s location, the species of tree, and physical characteristics of the tree and a timeline of photos that shows the growth of each tree. Boat Shrink-Wrap Disposal: Boaters can dispose of shrink-wrap either onsite at Earth Day 2015 or anytime through Memorial Day weekend at the Town’s Recycling Center located at 641 New York Avenue. A raffle to give away a custom-painted rain barrel is the newest addition to the Town of Huntington’s annual Earth Day Expo, which will be held on Saturday, April 23rd, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Town Hall. Painted by former Huntington resident Claudia Liu, the barrel depicts a fish jumping out of the water as seen from the shore. The 50-gallon barrel is both a decorative item – it would fit perfectly on a porch or in a family room as a conversation piece – and a utilitarian one, to be placed in a yard to capture and store rainwater for use in gardening, conserving water. The barrel is currently on display in the lobby of Town Hall, and persons can fill out a raffle entry there as well as at the Expo. The winner will be chosen and announced at the end of the Expo. Entering the rain barrel raffle is one of many reasons to drop by the Expo, as noted by Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. “Each year, the Town tries to highlight how residents can help preserve the environment while savings themselves money, and this year’s expo is no exception,” he said. “Whether it’s safely shredding unwanted documents to bringing e-waste for recycling or dropping off unneeded and unwanted medicines, residents will find a variety of ways they can get into

Raising Awareness Hushed tones filled the hallways and classrooms at Elwood Middle School as more than 120 students rallied together in support of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s National Day of Silence. Members of the EMS Knights of Good, Y.E.S. Club and Operation Respect Club, as well as other participating students, voluntarily took part in the awareness program. The National Day of Silence represents the silence of people in the LGBT community. For the second-consecutive year, Elwood students coordinated this event in an effort to promote

anti-bullying against LGBT students in their school community. By participating in the event, students hope to provoke others to consider their thoughts and actions before passing judgment and to create a more accepting climate in the school building. This year, students had the opportunity to meet with a representative from Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth Organization, who led a presentation on how to plan for and incorporate Day of Silence in their school. In the weeks leading up to the day, students created and hung posters around the school

to promote the program. An informational display was set up in the cafeteria for students who wanted to learn more about the LGBT community. The display included flags to represent some of the sexualities and genders on the spectrum, different gender pronouns people use and a game where different sexualities and gender identities were matched. In their classrooms, participating students wore a sticker to explain their silence to classmates and carried a whiteboard and marker to write their answers to their teachers’ questions, which allowed them to remain silent.

Fundraiser Nets $10,000

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson honored St. John’s Episcopal Church and longtime Town resident Margaret Breland and approximately $10,000 was raised to support Town summer camp programs at a dinner held April 13th at Crestwood Manor here. The Town’s Parks and Recreation Department held the event to raise additional, private funds to supplement the summer camp experience for the hundreds of underprivileged children who otherwise would be unable to attend summer camp. For decades, the Town-run Project P.L.A.Y. and St. John’s Camp have provided a safe and enjoyable summer experience for thousands of needy children throughout Huntington. The full-day camps, conducted free of charge for nearly 300 children annually, feature nutritious meals, games and activities, field trips and educational programs. All expenses, including meals, are covered by a Town appropriation and a New York State grant. At the dinner, Supervisor Petrone, on behalf of the Town, presented a plaque to Breland, who was an instrumental part of the early success of Project P.L.A.Y.,

serving as the camp’s director for decades, always lending a caring hand. She was also a fierce advocate for the camp, always pressing to ensure that the children’s needs were addressed in a timely and fair fashion. Breland was born and raised in Huntington, graduated from Walt Whitman High School and is a lifetime member of the NAACP

food packages and providing needed transportation. She is the proud mother of four children and has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Councilman Cuthbertson presented the plaque to St. John’s Church. For years, the Cold Spring Harbor-based church has provided funding to benefit the children who attend St. John’s Camp, which is open to children aged four to six. The church has a long history of community involvement: It participates with Habitat for Humanity and in the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI), which provides shelter and food for the homeless. The church runs a “grow to go” garden that grows food and distributes it to the needy. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, parishioners partnered with an Episcopal school in a remote Haitian village to aid in the recovery effort. More than 100 people attended the $75-a-plate dinner, which also featured raffles, door prizes and a silent auction. In preparation for their social studies unit on World War II and English class reading assignment of “The Cage,” by Ruth MinskySender, eighth-graders at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District received a visit from Holocaust survivor, Werner Reich. During his presentation, Mr. Reich, 88, used authentic photographs

of people and artifacts to share his story and critical life experiences when the Nazis came to power. Through visual accompaniments, he told his story in chronological order, beginning as a young boy born in Berlin, Germany to sharing the harsh realities he faced while imprisoned in various concentration camps.

Special Survivor While sharing his story, he integrated an important message against bullying and discrimination. He asked the students to take the initiative to help a friend without being asked and to report any form of bullying or discrimination to a trusted adult. After his presentation, Mr. Reich took time to answer students’ questions.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

With their game faces on, students in Liz Held and Beth Noon’s thirdgrade classes at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District used their math and science skills to compete in the annual Potato Olympics. Prior to the opening ceremonies of the event, students studied the Olympic games in their classrooms. They read nonfiction articles about various components of the Olympics including athletes, symbols, history, the Para Olympics and

athletic events then incorporated what they learned into a written assignment. On the day of the big event, students decorated a potato to resemble an athletic competitor and created a name and history for their Potato Olympian. While working cooperatively with teammates, students coached their Olympians through activities at eight different stations. Each station was designed and aligned to the Common Core to sharpen their math and science skills.

Students, with their competitors, participated in Olympic games that resembled luge, bowling, curling, high dive and the potato weigh-in. Additionally, third-graders visited the potato taste test station where they tried potatoes in different forms. Medals were awarded to each Olympian at the closing ceremonies. As a culminating activity, the children recorded some of their statistics onto the back of their Olympian’s trading card and wrote about their experience at this “spud”tacular event.
