Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

During the presentation, students laughed at his silly poems as he recited a few of them to the classes. He also discussed what poetry is, how he writes and how to use imagination when creating stories. Sardelli brought up the importance of emotions when writing and allowed students to

Mr. Smith visited kindergarten through second-grade students on March 30 to present on his life and career. He spoke about his writing process, his photography experience and read

excerpts from some of his books. Thanks to a school grant, students were each given one of his books to take home with kindergartners and first-graders receiving “I Am America” and secondgraders receiving “I Am the World.” Mr. Smith visited classrooms in the afternoon to sign copies. Students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School also learned about the author and received deeper explanations of his books

when he visited the school on March 31st. He spoke about the importance of the mind, body and spirit and how the three correlate with success. The Boyd PTA bought each student one of Mr. Smith’s books and the district bought his book collection for the classroom libraries. “He was dynamic, related well to the students and covered real character traits,” said Principal Dr. Denise Toscano. “He blew us away.”

The Harborfields Central School District invited veterans from throughout the community to their annual Jazz Cabaret Night on April 5th. The evening event took place in the Oldfield Middle School auditorium where tables were set up in patriotic fashion and desserts were served. The Harborfields High School Leadership Class mingled with the veterans at each table and learned more about their service. Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students created thank you cards for the veterans which were placed on the tables for them to take home. H a r b o r f i e l d s administrators were also present to greet and thank the veterans for their sacrifices including

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni, Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Rory Manning and Executive Director for Instructional Services Jordan Cox. The Leadership Class introduced themselves in front of the crowd and the microphone was then passed around the tables to each veteran where they had the opportunity to talk about their backgrounds and what branch of the military they came from. Many spoke about how they became involved with the military and how their service impacted their lives. The Harborfields High School Vocal Ensemble performed a number of songs for the attendees including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Bridge

Over Troubled Water” and “Respect” under the direction of Clare Jackson. The veterans also heard musical performances from the Harborfields High School Jazz Band under the direction of Dan Bilawsky. They played classic songs and with some featuring a vocal quartet of four students. Cox concluded the evening by thanking the veterans for attending and for their service and sacrifices. “We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the service that you provide to us every day,” he said. “You allow our students to grow up in an environment that is safe, that allows them to flourish and allows their voices to be heard.”

Celebrating Earth Day Family members were invited to Harley Avenue Primary School on April 6th and 7th for a special Earth Day performance by their second-graders. Dressed in black and white attire, he students showcased their singing skills and facts about the Earth in the school’s cafetorium for their loved ones. Music teacher Christina Long directed the show with accompanist Marge Margolf.

Songs included “It’s a Small World,” “What a Wonderful World” and “We’ve Got the Whole World.” Between each song, the students would recite poetry about keeping the world a safe and healthy place. Untraditional music props were used for a variety of songs, including old detergent bottles and cans to use as drums for a song titled, “R-E-C-Y-CL-E.” The students prepared

for the two-day performance by creating their own covers for the show’s booklet which they handed to family members before the show took place. In addition, the students worked together to create posters inspired by the illustrations in the book “What a Wonderful World,” and raised their designs up when singing the song to conclude the show.

95 YEARS YOUNG - On April 10th, Dix Hills Fire Department Company One celebrated a big birthday with veteran firefighter and Ex-Commissioner Hank Leids. At 95-years-old, Hank is the oldest member of the department. He joined the Dix Hills Fire Department in 1963 and has been a dedicated member, actively responding to calls as recently as 2013. The covenants had applied to a previous application for a day care center that was never built. The rezoning included new covenants and restrictions pertaining to this particular proposal. -- appropriated $65,000 from the Neighborhood Enhancements Fund to install new concrete curbs, sidewalks, accessible ramps and trees relating to the realignment and signal changes at the intersection of Depot Road and East 17th Street, Huntington Station. This funding is in addition to capital budget funding to rebuild the signal and realign the intersection. -- authorized spending up to $2.5 million for improvements to the Halesite Park bulkhead. Of

The Board also appointed Mortimer Francis Roberts to the Veterans Advisory Board.

The Huntington Town Board, at its April 4th meeting, took the next step in the transformation of the former New York State Armory on Fifth Street in Huntington Station into the James Conte Community Center. The Board authorized spending up to $10 million for construction at the center, of which $8.5 million will raised from the sale of bonds. The Town had previously secured $1.5 million in state aid for design work and construction necessary to renovate the building. The Town took possession of the Armory in 2013 and since then has completed environmental remediation (removing asbestos, lead paint and mold). Currently, the project is in the design phase – the Town is reviewing plans submitted for both the building and the exterior – and hopes to begin construction some time next year. The center will be used for various recreational and community activities. The center is named after former Assemb. James Conte, who passed away in 2012. One of his last official acts was to sponsor the bill that directed the state to transfer and convey the Armory at 100 E. 5th Street
