Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood School District, students participated in a week of yoga instruction led by trained yoga instructors. In its 19th year, Long Island’s Best challenges students in

The quality of the artwork is exceptional and delivers a professional-level show. Shaping Minds & Bodies To foster the comprehensive physical education program offered at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District, students participated in a week of yoga instruction led by trained yoga instructors. Sponsored by the PTA arts-in-education committee and coordinated by physical education teachers Carla Weiss and Frank Schiraldi, students enjoyed a visit from Prana Yoga and Wellness of Northport instructors Cathy Donnelly and Kathleen Brady during their physical education classes. As an introduction to the art of yoga, students learned basic stretches and poses to practice balance, flexibility and strength. Additionally, students were educated on the names of each stretch and completed routines of various yoga poses.

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Transit Safety The Suffolk Region PTA, in collaboration with the New York School Bus Contractors Association and the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, recently held a special session on child school bus safety. Four local school bus companies participated, hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service

in Bay Shore. Nearly 100 people from all over Suffolk County attended the event, designed to help parents better understand the safety features on modern school buses and the training requirements of drivers. Information provided includes the Top Ten Questions You Should Be Asking Your Bus Company. Demonstrations included

proper emergency evacuations, student management of crossings to and from the bus stop using the mirror system, child check safety using internal and external cameras, motion detectors, the significance of stop arms, and the necessity of children avoiding the danger zone of 10 feet in front of the bus.

Coins For Wishes In an effort to raise money for Make-a-Wish Suffolk County, students from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s National Honor Society collected more than $300 to benefit two ill boys in their community. From March 16th30th, Make-a-Wish Suffolk County launched their Coins for Wishes

Italian Trivia Challenge In late March, a team of 12 students from Harborfields High School and Oldfield Middle School travelled to SUNY Old Westbury to compete in the 31st Annual American Association of Teacher of Italian on Long Island Poetry, Iron Chef and Trivia Competition. Under the advisement of teachers Dr. Craig Butler and Rosalia Sinatra,

students taking an Italian class had the opportunity to compete against hundreds of talented students from all across Long Island. Competing in the trivia portion of the competition, the team of Harborfields students claimed the first place title. “The students are looking forward to returning to compete in the 2016 competition,”

said Butler. The AATI was founded in 1924 to promote the study of the Italian language, literature, and culture in schools, colleges and universities in North America. With approximately 1500 members worldwide, the AATI is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research in all areas of Italian studies.
