Next up were winter track stars Sofia Condron, Emily LaMena and James Rourke, who all successfully competed at the state championships. Finally, girls soccer team captain Mackenzie Stickelman was recognized. “Mackenzie is one of the most decorated girls soccer players ever to wear a John H. Glenn jersey,” Shanahan said. “In both her junior and senior campaigns, she was named League Player of the Year, All-County, Newsday All-County and All-State. Her work ethic and commitment to all of her team sports, music and clubs is extraordinary.”

Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse. Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families. Numerous exceptional Elwood-John H. Glenn High School winter studentathletes and a new Master Teacher were among the worthy individuals recognized at the Elwood School District Board of Education’s March 14 meeting, led by Dr. Kenneth Bossert, the district’s superintendent. Elizabeth Held, a third grade teacher at James H. Boyd Intermediate School, was recognized for being recently named a New York State Master Teacher by the governor’s office, recognizing her exemplary work in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math education. “Mrs. Held has earned this designation through outstanding classroom instruction, a career of creating engaging ways for students to learn and contribute to the school, and through wonderful district initiatives,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull. “The Elwood School District is so proud of Mrs. Held’s accomplishments and we are excited at the prospect of the benefits to our students and our staff through the world-class professional development she will now be a part of.” Athletic Director David Shanahan then introduced the students from the high school, honored for their achievements in the winter sports season. “What a tremendous

A Letter From Project9Line Dear supporters, The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities specifically pertaining to the respiratory & auditory body systems as well as mental disorders. The “savings” from these proposed changes are projected at 100 Billion dollars over the next 10 years. That equals $100,000 directly from 1 Million Veterans pockets. The main conditions affected are Sleep Apnea, Tinnitus, and PTSD. We only have 1 week left to stop them. Please alert your network around the country to tell their local congressman that we do not want these changes made. Also, please tell your media contacts the same. Together we can stop them but we must Act now. The VA claims that they will not reduce any current Ratings but it is the VA’s regular practice to periodically reassess disabled veterans who have not sought an increase. If a reassessment occurs, it may be done under the new guidelines and the risk of reduction is most definitely present. This new rating schedule may effect every veteran past, present, and future. The reason for the proposed sleep apnea changes is because many veterans who were exposed to burn pits and/or agent orange (both are dioxin) have developed the condition sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is extremely debilitating and can be fatal. Currently, if a veteran is diagnosed with sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine they are entitled to 50% service connection. Sleep apnea symptoms include; excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), depression, anxiety, headaches, sexual disfunction, hight blood pressure, increased accidents, cardiac issues, loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), of inability to concentrate, irritability, snoring, restlessness while sleeping, waking up suddenly after gasping or choking, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or crankiness, constant need to go pee at night, night sweats as well as it can lead to a stroke. The VA is proposing to eliminate

the 50% threshold verbiage that currently states “the veteran requires the use of a breathing assistance device, such as a CPAP machine” which entitles the veteran to 50% service connection. By removing this verbiage they will effectively eliminate any future applicants from getting the 50% rating for sleep apnea. The VA states “the basis for assignment of evaluation at all of these proposed levels will be the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea, not simply the method of treatment.” Also, the VA claims the “purpose of these changes is to update medical terminology, incorporate medical advances that have occurred since the last review, and provide well- defined criteria in accordance with actual clinical practice.” This is not so, It’s all about the money as shown through the VA projected savings in the VA economic impact study released on January 27, 2022. From said VA economic impact study - “VALUE: VA has determined that there are costs and transfer savings associated with this rulemaking. The total transfers savings is $15 billion from FY 2022-2026 and $57.1 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” Most of that savings (40 Billion) is from the proposed sleep apnea ratings changes and Tinnitus removal (15 Billion). The reason for the tinnitus changes is because almost everyone that has served has developed tinnitus. Tinnitus is the most commonly service connected condition. Over 90% of Veteran applicants are granted service connection for tinnitus (over 2 million veterans are service connected for tinnitus) and are paid about $150 per month at the current rate. The VA is proposing to eliminate the 10% rating for tinnitus and combine the symptoms of tinnitus with hearing loss and rate it under hearing loss. The issue is that the threshold for service connection for hearing loss is much more difficulty to achieve. The result of this change will make it extremely difficult for veterans to be compensated for tinnitus and the constant ringing in the ears. Also, in a separate simultaneous proposal, the VA is proposing to change the Rating Schedule for

mental health conditions. After review it seems that these changes may be beneficial to veterans but we should all be wary of assuming any benefit from these changes just yet. The definition and interpretation of the new verbiage has yet to be played out. With an estimated savings of 45 Billion over the next 10 years, it appears that the veterans with mental health conditions could be paying the price. Estimated savings based on the VA economic impact study of the proposed changes to the mental health verbiage within the ratings schedule. “Estimated impact: VA has

determined that there are costs and transfers associated with this rule making. The total budgetary impact is $18.3 billion from FT 2022-2026 and $45 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” We can not let them make these changes. Please take the time to alert your fellow Americans, fellow veterans, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made. Written by Troop 125 Boy Scout Ethan Newman The Boy Scouts live by a 12-point law. One of those points is to be kind. This year, two scouts from Trop 125 raised over $1,700 for St. Baldrick’s. This year’s fundraiser was held at the Miller’s Ale House on 88 Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack from12-4pm . Saint Baldrick’s is a foundation devoted to raising money to help fund research on childhood cancer. In order to raise money and awareness, people volunteer to shave their heads in solidarity

with those sick with cancer. The Boy Scouts who got their heads shaved were Scouts Ethan N. and Wyatt B. and as a show of support to the scouts, also Assistant Scoutmaster Dominic Zafonte. This was the 7th year that Team Captain Wyatt B. shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s, making him a “Knight of the Round Table.” As the top fundraiser on the team, Ethan N. was given the honor of throwing a pie at Scoutmaster Keith Burger. Explained Boy Scout Ethan N., “I personally decided to do St. Baldrick’s because I had heard in

the past that it was a good cause. John Glenn’s Volleyball-A-Thon Raises $3,000 For Sean Urda Fund Elwood-John H. Glenn High School held its annual Volleyball-a-Thon fundraiser on March 10. Hundreds of John Glenn students participated in 29 teams over the course of six hours, raising over $3,000 for charity. This year, the school’s student council chose to donate proceeds to the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund, which honors the memory

of John Glenn student Sean Urda. The John Glenn PTSA donated both food and time to support the players, and more than 15 faculty members donated their time to supervise and referee the event. Led by captain Jimmy Rourke, the Gold Diggers team – rounded out by Carmela Ciriello, Shannon McGrath, Diana Muniz,

Michael Polestino and Malav Shah – proved the winners of the competition. “The event went off without a hitch,” said teacher Lisa Fusaro. “Our students had a fantastic time coming together as a community for the first time since lockdown, and since it was for such a great cause, the event was even more memorable.”

Breast cancer treatments are highly effective, which is one reason why the National Cancer Institute can report that the fiveyear survival rate for nonmetastatic breast cancer is 90 percent. However, in certain situations, doctors may feel that the existing standard for breast cancer treatment may not be enough to help women overcome their disease. In such instances, doctors may discuss clinical trials with women battling breast cancer. The American Cancer Society defines clinical trials as research studies in which people volunteer to help doctors find ways to prevent or treat disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® points out that all current standards of treatment began as clinical trials. However, that does not mean women diagnosed with breast cancer should automatically sign up to participate in clinical trials. There are pros and cons to participating in clinical trials, and breast cancer patients can speak with their medical teams about the advantages and disadvantages of each trial they’re considering. One myth worth dispelling is that clinical trials are only an option for people who have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. In fact, the NCI notes that clinical trials are available for all stages of cancer. Four members of the Northport High School unified basketball team were selected to participate in the first annual Suffolk County PAL Unified Basketball All Star Game, which was held on March 27 at Patchogue-Medford

High School. Eleanor Noonan, Wyatt Fredericks, Ryan Louis and Tom Izzo participated in the exciting game, which had students from districts throughout the county. Students from the various districts were

selected to play on either the “Blue” or “White” team. While the blue team ultimately won, all students had an enjoyable time. The unified basketball season officially begins May 10.

Celebrating Global Cultures And Cuisines On March 9, ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School held its first International Night since 2019. More than 200 students, faculty

and community members gathered in the cafeteria to sample foods from over 30 stations around the world, including Belgium, Italy,

Greece, Croatia, Armenia, Ireland, France, the Philippines, Mexico and Latin-American fusion. The event continues to serve

as a great way to embrace the district’s diversity and celebrate different global cultures during National Foreign Language Month. Due to the pandemic, the event was not held during the past two school years, so the participating John Glenn students were excited to experience it, many for the first time. Students were invited to bring food or create a station to showcase their heritage or any country

of interest. In a special highlight, American Sign Language students performed Shakira’s “Try Everything.” “International Night was probably one of the best nights ever for me,” student Natalia Mata said. “It really brought our JGHS community together, which was needed. After a long time, COVID-19 finally slowed down ,which gave us an opportunity to make this

night happen. When the district announced that schools can accept donations for Ukrainian refugees, members of the Northport-East Northport community stepped up to the plate. Thus far, the high school food pantry has donated more than 1,000 pounds of food. Additionally, 20 bags of clothing and 40 bags of medical supplies

and toiletries have been donated, which are being dispersed to a Ukrainian church and the Suffolk County collection site organized by Executive Steve Bellone. The incredible display of charity was organized by high school IB student Rob Rada, who helped organize and create awareness around the donations. Northport

Middle School teacher Katy Durand also had a hand in the collections, helping organize the clothing donation to a Ukrainian church in New Jersey. The Northport-East Northport School District also arranged a monetary donation site through the UNICEF refugee program, which has raised more than $1,800 thus far.

The collection began in early March and is ongoing. Students began packing the bags of items into a truck, which will be returning as the donations were so abundant, it will need to make two trips.
