t the Elwood Union Free School District’s March Board of Education meeting, the Elwood Education Endowment organization awarded 10 teacher grants totaling more than $30,000 to benefit all four schools in the district in the areas of literacy, math, music and technology. During the meeting, EEE President Kathleen Koster and Vice President Janine Kuroda shared information about each grant and presented applicants with a certificate.

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? The Department of Health Services is pleased to announce a new initiative to help address the continuing opioid epidemic in the County. Effective April 1st, 2016, the Department in partnership with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (“LICADD”) will operate a 24/7 substance abuse hotline – 631.979.1700 - to link callers to appropriate treatment. All callers will be screened by a certified medical professional and referred to a local provider. Follow-up will be done to ensure timely access to care. Local providers through the Suffolk County Communities of Solution have been instrumental in the development of the initiative and are committed to partnering with LICADD to get callers into care as soon as possible. This hotline is available to those in crisis, contemplating sobriety or to guide family and friends who may have a loved one suffering from addiction.

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

New Partnership homeless teens and transitional housing for young people are among the agency’s offerings. FCA’s annual budget is $22 million – most of which comes from government - and the organization currently employs 320 fulland part-time employees across 11 sites in Nassau County and one in Suffolk. LICADD’s focus on addiction dates back more than 60 years and the largely privately funded agency offers a variety of evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs, family-centered addiction services and professional trainings. LICADD also maintains an earned income venture – an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that currently serves 60,000 private sector employees in the tri-state area. The agency currently has offices in Mineola, Holbrook and Riverhead.

Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, FCA’s President and CEO, served as LICADD’s Executive Director from 2009-2015 and the agencies have several board members and major donors in common. “This is the right move at the right time,” said Dr. Reynolds. “As Long Island struggles under the weight of an historic heroin crisis and a persistent fiscal crisis, joining forces means more efficiencies, pooled talent, and an even stronger continuum of care for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders.” Together, the agencies now offer a full menu of services ranging from school-based prevention programs, to mental health/substance abuse screenings, to brief interventions and NYSlicensed outpatient treatment, to recovery support and relapse prevention. Additional services offered by the agencies include: youth mentoring, services

for military veterans, children’s mental health services, transitional housing and professional continuing education programs. “Ultimately, this collaboration will allow both agencies to reach and assist more people. That is the only reason these two agencies exist; service provision and support for Long Islanders. We at LICADD are excited about this great partnership,” said LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. Under the formal agreement, LICADD will retain its identity, its 501c3 nonprofit status and existing programs for the foreseeable future, and FCA will help the agency manage staff, finances, existing grants and new opportunities in the rapidly evolving behavioral health marketplace. “The two agencies have a long history of collaboration and mutual respect. By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Budget Receives Recognition guidelines for effective budget presentation. The main factors weighed were how well the budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. The panel needed to rate the budget as “proficient” in all four categories, including 14 mandatory criteria within those categories. “This is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement by your organization,” the GFOA said in the letter notifying Huntington Supervisor

Frank P. Petrone of the award. The letter added, “Through your example, we hope other entities will be encouraged to achieve excellence in budgeting.” “The Town’s budget is required reading for anyone interested in understanding how our government manages resources properly to provide services residents demand while keeping taxes low,” Supervisor Petrone said. “We are proud of our budget’s clarity that demonstrates implementation of the Town’s prudent fiscal policies and we appreciate the

continuing recognition from this distinguished organization.” The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 18,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation

Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices

on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal. The Distinguished Budget Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

Selected for SCMEA According to usdan.org, each summer, more than 1,500 students, ages 4-18, travel to USDAN from neighborhoods throughout the New York metropolitan area. The camp offers more than 40 different classes for students to choose from in eight departments. While some programs require an audition and/or interview, admission into the camp is based on interest. Goehring was awarded the scholarship after her double bass performance at the Division I SCMEA Concert on March 13th. Blake Goehring, a sixthgrader at Elwood Middle School, is among a select group of four studentmusicians to receive a

AUXILIARY DONATION - The auxiliary raised these funds through numerous efforts throughout the year, including managing the gift shop and many lobby sales. The Huntington Hospital auxiliary also provides much of the artwork seen in the Dolan Family Health Center and the hospital; its volunteers create Valentine’s Day cards for patients; and they decorate the lobby for the holidays. In addition, the group also sponsored two holes at the 2015 Huntington Hospital golf outing and donated badge holders to the hospital.

Granting Teacher Grants At the Elwood Union Free School District’s March Board of Education meeting, the Elwood Education Endowment organization awarded 10 teacher grants totaling more than $30,000 to benefit all four schools in the district in the areas of literacy, math, music and technology. During the meeting, EEE President Kathleen Koster and Vice President Janine Kuroda shared information about each grant and presented applicants

with a certificate. Some of the grants this year include books and materials to support literacy instruction for kindergartners at Harley Avenue Primary School, enhancing the music curriculum at Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate schools, “Mini-Q” DBQ resources for the ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School social studies curriculum, the “Ozobots in Action” coding robotics program for James H. Boyd

students and renewable energy, solar car and wind turbines, for the Elwood Middle School technology program. Since its inception in 2004, the EEE organization has worked to preserve and expand the educational programs offered by the district. Through its fundraising efforts, the EEE awards teacher grants to augment additional opportunities beyond the core curriculum that are not covered by the district’s budget.

Getting the Gold Congratulations to Northport High School Art Students Nicholas Conrey, Ryan Penrose, and their teacher, Mr. John DeRosa, who were recently selected to receive Gold Medals at the 2016 National Scholastic Art and Writing

Competition. This year, nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted, and only the top 1 percent of submissions were recognized at the national level. These students have been invited to attend a

ceremony at the worldfamous Carnegie Hall on Thursday, June 2nd. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Stephen King and Lena Dunham.

Bridge to Success The Elwood Union Free School District is proud to boast two Elwood-John H. Glenn High School ninthgraders for their success at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Model Bridge Building Competition. Student Zach Stickelman earned the Aesthetic Award, while his classmate Zach Siddiqui won third place in the competition. According to the BNL website, the construction and testing of model bridges

promotes the study and application of principles of physics, mathematics and engineering. It also helps students develop hands-on skills. Through participation, they get a taste of what it is to be an engineer, designing structures to a set of specs and then seeing them perform their function. For the competition, high school students from across Long Island, respectively, designed

and constructed bridges within the contest’s specifications. The object of the competition was for students to create the most efficient model bridge that represents a simplified version of a realworld bridge that could sustain the weight and load permitted to cross the entire bridge. “I am really proud of the kids this year,” said technology teacher Domenick Abbate.

Superintendent Appointed At its business meeting on March 31st, the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Kenneth Bossert as the district’s new superintendent, effective July 1st, 2016. Dr. Bossert joins Elwood with a wealth of educational and leadership experience, most recently serving as superintendent of schools for the Port Jefferson Union Free School District, a post he has held since 2011. In his time with Port Jefferson, Dr. Bossert led the district through five successful budget cycles, all within the district’s tax levy cap, and with nearly 80 percent approval ratings. He also helped to expand Advanced Placement offerings at the high school, as well as other courses through which students could earn college credit. Dr. Bossert steered the district through its creation of a STEM collaborative with Stony Brook University and established district committees for curriculum development, professional development, AIS and RTI services and technology. He also expanded the district’s use of Columbia University’s Teachers College writing program. Prior to his superintendency in Port Jefferson, Dr. Bossert worked in the Three Village Central School District, first as the district’s executive director for curriculum and instruction and then transitioning into

the role of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He also served in the capacity of building principal in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District, assistant principal in the Longwood Central School District, and as an elementary school teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in child studies from St. Joseph’s College, a Master of Arts and an advanced graduate

degree in school administration from Stony Brook University, and a Doctor of Educational Leadership and Technology from Dowling College. He also completed the educational leadership program offered through Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. Dr. Bossert said he is looking forward to his new

position with Elwood and is eager to meet the district’s stakeholders. “The success of the new superintendent can hinge upon the relationships developed with the various stakeholders within the school community,” he said. “I will work vigorously to ensure that I create a positive rapport with all constituent groups and will make myself available to answer questions, respond to concerns and initiate future meetings with interested parties. Trust and transparency will be the key to my success.” Dr. Bossert’s appointment completes the district’s search for its new leader, which consisted of extensive input from the community. “We are thrilled to announce Dr. Bossert as our new superintendent,” said Board of Education President Andrew L. Kaplan. “He not only has an extensive resume in educational leadership, but he possesses all of the qualities deemed essential in a new superintendent by our own community. We welcome Dr. Bossert to our great district and know that he will be a positive asset for years to come.” The district will host a meet-and-greet session for parents and community members to meet Dr. Bossert prior to the next Board of Education meeting on Thursday, April 14th, from 6:45 to 7:25 p.m. in the Elwood Middle School cafeteria.

In an effort to raise awareness about animal cruelty, members of the Elwood Middle School Knights of Good club, advised by Todd Schwartz, hosted a two-day Animal Abuse Awareness Program on March 31st and April 1st. In honor of the event, president and founder of the Grateful Greyhounds organization Lisa Sallie, along with two volunteers and three greyhound service dogs, visited students in their physical education classes. During the visit, Sallie, who is also an Elwood-John H. Glenn High School guidance counselor, discussed ways

to identify if an animal has been neglected or abused, how to help an animal feel more comfortable and safe, and the best way to take care of an animal or pet. Students were then able to pet each dog and ask any additional questions. “It is important for our culture to embrace animals like we do human beings,” said Sallie. “By educating students in the school system, we can hopefully make an impact so they will be good pet owners in the future.” In recognition of the awareness program, students wrote the name of their pet(s) on a dog bone shaped sticker and

wore it for the entire school day. Additionally, the club hosted a poster contest, in which students created animal abuse awareness or greyhound abuse awareness posters during their lunch periods. The winning poster in each grade was displayed on the Grateful Greyhound website, www. gratefulgreys.com. As part of a community service project, the club held a pet supply drive and donated all items they collected to the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington.
