U.S. Air Force Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Justin P. White graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. White is the son of Patrick White of Huntington, and Jennifer O’Reilly of Huntington Station. He is also the brother of Patrick White. The airman graduated in 2014 from Walt Whitman High School, Huntington Station.

Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

Ms. Bloomberg is a former Radio City Rockette, who holds a B.A. degree in English and Theater Arts from Adelphi University, and has recently had her poetry and short stories published in several literary magazines. She has six published children’s books which she reads in schools and libraries and brings the stories to life engaging the young readers in creative movement. She continues to help the Arts Council keep the arts alive in Huntington, and foster an appreciation of the arts in the young people of the community The Rea Jacobs Scholarship for Dance is

On March 23rd, Boy Scout scouting volunteer Tom Rolston of East Northport was recognized with the prestigious David Brady Commissioner Award from the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, during their annual Fellowship Dinner at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Hauppauge. Named in memory of
Council Commissioner David Brady, this award honors an individual who has held many positions in the council at all levels, who leads with inspiration, demonstrating leadership through diligence and attention to detail, and takes all administrative aspects of Scout Commissioning very seriously.
Mr. Rolston, a 40 year scouting veteran in Suffolk County Council, has served in a variety of capacities over the years including Webelos Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Troop Advancement Chair, Merit Badge Counselor, Unit Commissioner, District Committee Member, Assistant District Commissioner and District Commissioner. In addition to his responsibilities as Commissioner, Mr. Rolston has recently taken on the leadership role to track all Webelos Scouts for registration and recruitment purposes and is presently developing a role as champion for Adult Youth Protection Training enhancements within the Suffolk County Council. Congratulations to Tom for his tenure and his continuing success within our Scouting organization.

Memorable Evening attended the event with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni and Principal Timothy Russo there to greet community members. “I am grateful to be here and I hope that you enjoy every minute of this play,” said Dr. Ianni. “It’s truly a pleasure that you are here to see our students perform.” Members from the school’s National Honor Society volunteered their time to serve food and refreshments during the event. The room was decorated in true spring fashion with flowers on every table as centerpieces. Community members
were welcomed to take the arrangements home after the reception was over. A raffle also took place during the event where Russo and Dr. Ianni provided gift cards to a number of lucky winners. Gift cards ranged from local stores to restaurants. At the conclusion of the reception, community members made their way to the school’s auditorium to enjoy the student production, directed by Kristen Gavin. Students dressed in their best red, white and blue and dedicated the show to all of the men and women
keeping the country safe and free. During the show, each student presented a fact to the audience about American symbols. These included facts on the White House, American Flag, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln. The group also performed a number of patriotic songs together such as “God
Bless America,” “This Land is Your Land” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” Music teacher Laura Pomerantz accompanied the students on the piano. At the conclusion of the performance, students and family members enjoyed a table of treats and refreshments provided by parents in the class.

Twenty Northport High School Business students recently competed in the New York State DECA Career Development Conference among 2,300 competitors. Advised by business teachers Kristen Cogan and Elizabeth Price, the team brought home 18 medals from the competition. Juniors Kelly Finegan and James O’Hara and senior Sydney Gilison
placed in the top 10 in the state overall in their individual categories, while senior Noelle Mandery placed fifth in the Sports and Marketing category. Mandery has now qualified to compete in the international competition in Anaheim, California this April. In addition, all competitors at the state level took a 100-question written exam and were
judged in at least one role play event where they had to solve a case study problem. Sophomore Max Aftel and juniors Luciana Arteaga, Stephen Muzyka and Colin Trainor medaled in these events. “I’m so proud of these students,” said Cogan. “It’s wonderful when we can see the students using what they learned in class to solve real world problems in the role play setting.”
Teachers Receive Grants During the Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on March 23rd, the Elwood Education Endowment organization awarded six teacher grants totaling $30,000 to benefit all four schools in the district. Educators applied for a grant in the fall and had the opportunity to collaborate if they desired. Since the EEE’s inception in 2004, the organization has awarded $465,000 in grants as a means to expand the educational programs offered by the district. Through fundraising efforts, the organization awards these grants to create additional opportunities beyond the core curriculum, not covered by the district’s budget. This year, grants were
provided to benefit students by bringing Google Expeditions into the classrooms and expand the James H. Boyd Intermediate School STEM program through the use of iPads, Makey Makey Kits and Dash and Dot robots. In addition, grants were awarded for a redesign of the Elwood Middle School common area, a band composer workshop and new interactive games and books to teach ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School Living Environment students about diseases and the immune system. Recipients included Director of Humanities Pamela Fine, Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen KellyGorman, James H. Boyd Intermediate School teachers Renee Spanos, Liz
Held and Krista Albrecht, Elwood Middle School media specialist Donna Fife, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School science teacher Ricky Greening and music teacher Vickie Henson. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert extended his sincere gratitude towards the organization, while Board Vice President Julia Fried praised the teachers for striving to make a difference in the lives of students. “I’d like to recognize the teachers who have gone above and beyond by applying for these grants that will bring exciting new things to the classroom and to all those that work so hard to fundraise,” she said.

involved with the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown. Her relationship began with raising one puppy and she since has taken on many responsibilities with the foundation. She currently houses a male Guide Dog Foundation stud and a female who has bred three times. In addition, she is raising her sixth puppy. Indirectly, Dawn is responsible for generating hundreds of dogs to help people who are visuallyimpaired and veterans in need of assistance. Ms. Spano volunteers weekly in the Smithtown facility and has become an integral part of the foundation. Currently, Ms. Spano is a member of the speaker’s bureau, the whelping team and the breeding department. She helps new volunteers raise puppies, participates in educational awareness presentations and has organized fundraising events, generating more than $25,000 for the
foundation. Ms. Spano is also involved with using therapy dogs to help children with special needs, independently working with hospitals and libraries. In addition, Ms. Spano volunteers for Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD) and assisted in organizing a party for children at Good Samaritan Hospital. Ms. Spano resides with her husband and three children in Melville. She was nominated for this award by Cheryl Haiken, Legislator D’Amaro’s representative on the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission. “Through her many activities, Dawn Spano has demonstrated a passion for helping others,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “Her volunteerism truly exemplifies the humanitarian spirit, and I am honored to designate Ms. Spano as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2017.”

Dawn Spano, a tireless community volunteer for nearly two decades, has been selected by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2017. Science and Engineering Five Oldfield Middle School students participated in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), with three students being among first and second place winners for their innovative research projects. Seventh-grader Omar Lee presented his project titled, “Which Internet Browser is the Most Efficient?” and received a top score at the fair winning a first place ribbon. As a result, Lee earned a nomination to continue on at the Broadcom MASTERS national competition. Students Sofia Smith
and Emilie Hochwald presented their project “Why Did Over 10,000 Fish Die in Centerpoint Harbor?” and earned a spot at second place while students Gillian Storch and Avery Medico presented on “Does the Temperature of a Magnet Affect Its Strength?” This was the second year that the school has participated in the Middle School LISEF competition. The first place and overall winner of the Oldfield Middle School seventhgrade science fair were offered the opportunity to showcase their projects and compete at the LISEF.
“The participants’ teachers and I are so proud of them for achieving top honors in our local school fair and we are especially pleased to see them participate in a largerscale competition such as LISEF,” said science department coordinator Mike Hopkins. “All our participants should be congratulated for their effort, dedication to their project, and enthusiasm for science. the overall health of our communities.” RotaCare operates at the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility at 875 Jerusalem Ave., in Uniondale. Each year more than 100 volunteer doctors, nurses, translators and support staff provide more than $4 million of free medical services to those most in need. They devote more than 14,000 volunteer hours to help 1,200 patients each year, plus more than 2,400 visits. Recognizing its tremendous benefits to the community, in 1992 RotaCare was created and adopted as a Rotary District 7250 project, incorporated as a 501 (c) 3.
