The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 28th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chair Sylvia Silberger of Hempstead. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive.” Silberger says there are many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because do not drive or own their own cars. “We all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world,” she added Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself

type of communication), a cell phone chat, a fax or some other type of carrier. The Medium - The medium is the method by which the message passes through, which can take a variety of forms. Let’s use the example of chatting with another using your smart phone. The Receiver - The receiver is the person you are talking with. At this point, he/she has started to decipher your message and, based on that comprehension, is ready to reply. Now, the receiver is replying to you and, in effect, giving you feedback. You are now in a position to interpret the response and reply accordingly. The following are several guidelines to observe during this process: The Downward Effect of Noise - Noise can be present anywhere in the communication loop. It can take the form of any type of disturbance which disrupts the transmission and reduces the quality of the communication. Use of Jargon - Always keep your words as simple as possible. A particular type of statement might be fine for a business situation, but not useful in other conversations. Body Language - A point to

The Art of Effective Communication To start, let’s begin by defining communication. Simply put, it is the transfer and understanding of meaning to another person. However, not communicating effectively can lead to misunderstandings, confusion and a host of other problems. For example, have you ever completed a conversation only to have the other person state that he/she is not sure what you said? How about a cell phone chat where the other person’s voice fades in and out and you just assume you heard everything said? What if you are talking to a person with a heavy accent and are hesitant to ask them to clarify? Chances are, you have probably interpreted a few things incorrectly. Try to envision effective communication as a closed loop. For example, in an electrical circuit, all components must be completely integrated. If not, there will be a short circuit, and the circuit will fail. So it is with the communication loop. Allow us to delve further into the subject. Let’s begin by exploring each component: The Message - The process begins with the sender of the message. This can be in the form of a face-to-face conversation (the most effective

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. The tree I love, she stands so tall. In the Autumn, all of her leaves do fall. Now in December, I take a glance and see snow has covered each and every branch. In the Spring, on her rebirth, tiny buds I see each day. I wait and look each and every day for the buds to say Spring is here. The birds have time to nest, the squirrels frolic up and down. (NAPSI)—If you ever find yourself lying awake at night, you’re not alone— even if no one else is in the room. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime. Why And How To Get A Better Night’s Sleep

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently joined the Half Hollow Hills School District in honoring Cassandra Ye, a Half Hollow Hills High School East sophomore who has been selected as one of only five Long Island delegates for the 56th National Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Ms. Yee was honored at the March 19th Board of

Education meeting in Dix Hills. The JSHS science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) competition promotes original research and experimentation at the high school level and recognizes students for outstanding achievements in STEM. Ms. Yee’s project suggested the existence of a stress-response pathway in an aquatic plant which could be used to alleviate the harmful effects of

heavy metal pollutants on plants. She will present her findings at the Symposium, to be held May 2nd through 5th in Hunts Valley, MD. “I commend Cassandra Ye for her dedication and hard work that resulted in her selection for this prestigious symposium and was privileged to honor her,” said Legislator Donnelly. “She makes the entire community proud.”

Okay to Be Different Schools within the Harborfields Central School District hold fast to the nationwide “No Place for Hate” initiative, and regularly implement inschool events and activities to remind students of this important idea. On March 27th, Washington Drive Primary School held a “Character Counts” assembly, and virtually brought in students from Oldfield Middle School to speak about being different. Sixth-graders from Mrs. Horowitz’s class prepared to speak to students in

grades kindergarten through second about accepting differences and “being yourself” by telling stories, sharing original poems, and explaining how they differed from everyone else. Middle schoolers shared differences like being a vegetarian, having ADHD, or struggling with anxiety. In addition, they shared how they coped with having these differences. Sixth-graders stressed to the younger students that no matter what, one should never be quick to judge others, and to always be kind–

no matter how someone differs from the crowd. Assistant Principal Ms. Kathy McNally facilitated the event, and encouraged younger students to ask questions regarding the sixth-grader’s personal experiences. At the end of the assembly, Ms. McNally asked the middle schoolers for a piece of advice for the Washington Drive students. “Try your hardest to always be kind, and to remember it’s okay to be different,” said one sixthgrader.

City Strolls have been documented in past columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are

activities to indulge in during any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

After choosing a specific cause, students created informational boards to present to their peers at the fair. These National Junior Honor Society students, along with sixthgrade volunteers, acted as ambassadors for their chosen organizations, which included Birthday Wishes, a company that looks to spread joy to homeless children through birthday presents; the League of Yes, a baseball program that brings joy to those with disabilities; Happy Tails, a no-kill animal shelter, and many more. “I was inspired by how much some of these

programs really do for the community,” said Becca, an eighth-grader at Oldfield Middle School. Throughout the day, every social studies class attended the fair and learned about the local organizations looking for volunteers. Each student took note of the three they’d most like to volunteer for. “Most kids don’t know how many opportunities there are to volunteer in the local community,” said social studies teacher and event facilitator Jennifer Klein. “And we’re trying to teach them that even at a young age it’s important to do your part–to give back.”
