Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board. The five-point platform includes: an independent, comprehensive forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses. It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Veteran Service Dog Fundraiser Gerard Depardieu. Its writer and director, Richard Lanni, describes the film as “a great way to engage kids with history, and we are thrilled to see audiences around the world share out love for this little dog and his great mission of opening new eyes to our shared past.” Councilwoman Cergol learned of the film, which had its theatrical release last year, from the newsletter of the American Legion Auxiliary, of which she is a member. The newsletter noted that the American Legion had partnered with VetFlicks to facilitate screenings. VetFlicks is a not-for-profit organization founded by military and film industry veterans to arrange for screenings around the country. VetFlicks’ mission is to ensure that service persons and those returning from combat are portrayed accurately and that the issues they face are presented honestly within the entertainment industry. Councilwoman Cergol
contacted VetFlicks, which arranged for her to see the film. “It was touching, and funny, and at the same

(Halesite Post 360, Northport Post 694 and Greenlawn Post 1244) and America’s VetDogs, the Smithtownbased affiliate of the Guide Dog Foundation. America’s VetDogs trains and places service dogs for those with physical disabilities; guide dogs for individuals who are blind or have low vision; service dogs to help mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder; hearing dogs for those who have lost their hearing, and facility dogs as part of the rehabilitation process in military and VA hospitals. It was in the news recently as the organization that trained and provided the late President George H.W. Bush’s service dog, Sully. America’s VetDogs will be bringing one of its ambassador dogs to the Cinema Arts Centre, as well as one of its human ambassadors to answer questions about its programs. “Can anything be better than bringing veterans, families and dogs together
to raise money for our American heroes… including those with four legs?” Councilwoman Cergol asked. “I look forward to joining with everybody on May 4 to share Stubby’s incredible story.” To reserve your seat to this screening and meet an American VetDogs ambassador dog, tickets can be purchased in advance by making checks payable to the Huntington Cultural Affairs Institute and mailing them to Councilwoman Joan Cergol, Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main Street, Huntington NY 11743. Stubby: An American Hero” at the Cinema Arts Center on the morning of Saturday, May 4. The family-friendly film is based on the incredible true story of not only the first but also the most decorated dog in American history. Stubby, a stray rescued off the streets of New Haven, CT, by a U.S, soldier training on the eve of World War I to be deployed to Europe, went on to save countless lives in the trenches of France. The dog, who received a battlefield promotion to “sergeant,” became famous for warning his unit of a gas attack, saving lives on the battlefield and even capturing a German prisoner. The film features the voices of Logan Lerman, Helena Bonham Carter and

Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where
we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.
How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.
tanks brimming with local marine life. This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! The district will be holding a lottery for NorthportEast Northport residents only to fill these spots. In this program, each toddler will be paired with a student from Northport’s Family and Consumer Science class, where students will be studying toddler development. The classroom where the program is held is specially designed with learning tools and age-appropriate toys for toddlers aged 2 through 4. The goal of the program is to introduce the children to a classroom environment, provide opportunity for them to learn to separate from their caregivers, and interact with their peers. Moving Forward Today’s column is all about change. When you think about it, you’ll realize that change is all around us. For example, look at the number of women that are now in the U.S. House of Representatives. Look at the way our government is now run. Look at the new air of mystery surrounding many of the documents released by our government. I take no sides on this; merely I want to present the facts as reported by the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. The other day I watched
a fascinating documentary about the effect of climate change around the world. It mentioned the melting of glaciers in Alaska and the heavy damage it is causing to both wildlife and commercial endeavors. Worse yet, the problem intensifies with each passing year and no one has the answer. There is a rumor that our government is even considering allowing new gas and oil exploration in many of these pristine areas with no regard for the damage it will do to wildlife and other vital areas of our environment.
Have you also noticed both the intensity and frequency of the storms we are experiencing along the entire United States? It is now common almost every day to see roads closed due to blizzard-like conditions, large cruise ships encountering unheard of severe weather patterns, threatening both the ship and the thousands of passengers aboard. Are you getting the message yet? The complexity of change itself…let’s approach the topic in a different way. One of my favorite entertainers is the

For those of you not familiar with it, it became one of the early top favorites at the time, and starts by naming at least fifteen trouble spots around the world and specifically pointing out that the “young people” of this world did not cause it. For, it was already there! Are you starting to see how difficult it really is to pinpoint the problems that change brings to all of us? We have now taken a
complete turn on how we all view change. For example, over the morning news I heard former Vice President, Joe Biden, carefully explain how he operates and the way he supports others. Plus more about the finger-pointing at Boeing, the psychological war between our President and the House of Representatives, the continuing fiasco surrounding building “The Wall” and the madness at our borders with Mexico, the increasing rate of rapes and murders throughout our country, problems in
Puerto Rico and many of our mid-east neighbors, plus the ever repeating problems surrounding Brexit. I have to ingest all of this news while having my breakfast? So here’s my secret for dealing with all of this madness…I relaxed over another cup of coffee and slowly started on how to organize my day. No Rush. Peace.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely
chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! Northport High School was visited by Atlantic Marine Conservation Society biologist Allison DePerte on March 27 to teach students about the dangerous effects of marine debris on our environment. The visit was organized and hosted by the high school’s Environment Team, which is an interdisciplinary program that teaches students to investigate the interactions of human culture and the natural world. Northport High School’s biology students and third-graders that are a part of the district-wide “Investigate” program to attend the presentation as well. Groups of students listened intently as Ms. DePerte shared dangers of pollution, how it affects local and global marine life, and explained how local beach cleanups can be extremely effective. “Recent studies have shown that, in one month,

The Northport-East Northport School District’s Board of Education recognized three of its high-achieving students during their meeting on March 21. Senior Nicholas Bertos was recognized as the Social Studies Department student of the month. Always challenging himself with the most rigorous academic programs, he will be graduating as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate with an Advanced Regents Diploma. Bertos has excelled in American Law and L.E.A.D. electives and is also a member of the Model U.N. Team, Mock Trial Team and Law Club. “We are not only concerned with the academic success of our students, but the skills and
behaviors they develop to become lifelong learners and active, productive citizens,” said Sean Hurley, district chairperson of social studies. “Highlighted by his work ethic, humility and leadership, we are very proud of the young man that Nick has become and how he represents Northport.” Senior Arianna Keating was also recognized as the Family and Consumer Science Department student of the month. Keating plays a fundamental role in the organization and management of the preschool classroom by leading group activities and being a role model for the high school students. Keating also serves as secretary of student government, is a senior leader in SHARE,

Northport Internship Outreach In order to obtain realworld experience, students enrolled in Northport High School’s Academy of Informational Technology are in search of local employers to provide internship opportunities for this upcoming summer. The AOIT is an interdisciplinary program that prepares students for a career in information technology and, by completing a summer internship, bridges the gap between classroom and business environments.
By choosing to partner with Northport High School in this program, local businesses will be providing students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning to a real-world setting, provide firsthand experience with teamwork, time-management, communication skills and more. Additionally, employers will be hiring from a pool of well-prepared and highly motivated group of students that have foundation in computer
programming, IT security, database administration, web design, networking and other digital workplace functions. “During last summer’s internship, I worked on a website using programming languages like JavaScript at Applied Visions Inc.,” said Elliot Macolino, a senior at Northport High School and co-president of the AOIT. “I used skills I learned in my AOIT courses, and I gained IT work experience at a professional software
development company.” Additionally, students enrolled in this program will also deliver presentations on their internships during the fall of their senior year at the Employer Recognition Trade Show. Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy. This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing
so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in re-purposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

Northport High School was visited by Atlantic Marine Conservation Society biologist Allison DePerte on March 27 to teach students about the dangerous effects of marine debris on our environment. The visit was organized and hosted by the high school’s Environment Team, which is an interdisciplinary program that teaches students to investigate the interactions of human culture and the natural world. Northport High School’s biology students and third-graders that are a part of the districtwide “Investigate” program to attend the presentation as well.
Groups of students listened intently as Ms. DePerte shared dangers of pollution, how it affects local and global marine life, and explained how local beach cleanups can be extremely effective. “Recent studies have shown that, in one month, over 1.7 million food wrappers and 1.5 million plastic bottles can be found washed up on beaches all around the world,” Ms. DePerte told students. “Do we think that’s a big problem?” The auditorium responded with a resounding yes. Additionally, Ms. DePerte spoke to students about the
waste we create with singleuse plastic items, such as straws and disposable utensils, and shared that Americans, between the ages of five and 65, use upwards of 35,000 straws. After the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask additional questions. E-Team students imparted some of their own wisdom to the younger students as well, urging them to “reduce your use.” E-Team students also shared with Ms. DePerte their plans on proposing a town ban on Styrofoam. and are planning on handing out reusable straws during Earth Week.

Students who love to get lost in the world of books find solace in Northport Middle School’s “Create Time to Read Club,” which meets every Wednesday after school. The club spends time each week reading some of the most popular young adult titles aloud, such as “No More Dead Dogs” and “Bridge to Terabithia,” and then discussing themes, character development and other elements of fiction
with one another. “I think reading a good book is more enjoyable than sitting around and watching television,” said Liam, one of the club members. “And it’s so much better for your brain, too.” Many students vocalized that when they joined the club, they were unsure of how many of their peers would be involved — and were pleasantly surprised at the regular turn out.
“So many kids don’t really seem to like to read, and it kind of makes me sad,” said Grace, a regular club-attendee. “It’s really awesome to come to a club where everyone is on the same page…literally.” Students hope to get more of their peers involved and to expand the club, ultimately teaching more students how enjoyable and beneficial reading can be.
