Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

On October 2nd, 2014, Suffolk County launched the bullying awareness website, which can be found at www.suffolkstopbullying. org. Legislator Sarah Anker invites Suffolk County students ages 13-18 to participate in a music video contest, in an effort to help address the concerns of bullying. “According to 2010 Bullying Statistics, 160,000 children miss school each day for fear of being bullied,” said Legislator Anker, County Chairwoman of Education and Information Technology Committee. “Having been a victim of bullying myself, I understand how important it is to speak up.” By working with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County’s Information Technology Department, Department of Health, Youth Bureau and the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Anker initiated the creation of a bullying awareness website. Hunger Fighters In conjunction with Stop & Shop’s Fighting Hunger Challenge, students in Harborfields High School’s Global Justice Club, under the advisement of Michelle DaSilva, collected over 800 lbs. of food for the Harborfields Association for Community Outreach (HACO). Entrance into the

contest required students to build a structure with the food they collected and display it in a prominent location in their school. BOCES Scholarship Presented by the Suffolk Region PTA Board of Managers, Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Lauren Scott-Mahommed was selected to receive this year’s Western Suffolk BOCES Scholarship Award. As part of her high school education, ScottMahommed attends the Western Suffolk BOCES Wilson Tech Program where she studies fashion merchandising and business. ScottMahommed, along with other high school students, spends two hours each morning at the program where she is educated on various fashion skills and business concepts before

returning to her school building. Accompanied by two letters of recommendation, Scott-Mahommed entered the scholarship after she submitted an essay about her experience in the program and how she can implement the knowledge she has learned in her life and future career path. In mid-March, the Suffolk Region PTA and Western Suffolk BOCES sponsored a “Dinner and Presentation” where Wilson Tech students showcased the various skills they have acquired in the program. Following a fashion presentation by Scott-Mahommed

and other fashion and design students, Scott-Mahommed was recognized as the scholarship recipient. To continue her education from ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School and the Wilson Tech Program, ScottMahommed will attend SUNY Oneonta for fashion merchandising and design in Fall 2015. “We applaud your hard work and effort during your high school experience that has led to this scholarship award,” said Suffolk Region PTA director Kathy Vento.

Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in a Charity Volleyball Tournament with all proceeds benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities. and teacher Danielle Donohue, the Charity Volleyball Tournament drew in about 20 teams made up of more than 210 students. A $5 donation was collected from every participant, allowing them and their teammates to take to the courts for several rounds of friendly volleyball matches. With the collaborative efforts from students and faculty, the event raised $1,058.

Stony Brook University is the first higher education institution committed to providing cancer researchers as mentors to high school students under a program run by “Stand Up To Cancer” (SU2C) and PBS LearningMedia. Called the EMPEROR Science Award Program, the education initiative encourages students from economically disadvantaged high schools to pursue careers in science, with a particular emphasis on cancer research through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. Known as an institution that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to conduct research, Stony Brook University is also a national leader in providing research mentoring programs and opportunities for qualified high school students in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)

disciplines. As part of the EMPEROR Science Award Program, researchers from the Stony Brook University Cancer Center will mentor qualifying students. According to SU2C, applications will be available in August 2015 for the program on PBS LearningMedia’s website and on the SU2C website. Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 Awardees, high school students from Title I, or similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools, who will receive one-onone science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule, as well as $1,500 grants, will be announced in late 2015. Students will be connected with science mentors from a host of high-profile medical research centers, from among more than 100 SU2C-affiliated institutions as well as universities and industry leaders in cancer

diagnosis and treatment. The education initiative was announced on March 24th in connection with “Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The EMPEROR of All Maladies,” a film by Barak Goodman which will air on PBS as a three-part series on Monday, March 30, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st. “The need to increase cancer research to discover cures for many forms of cancer remains a top priority nationally, and this program will provide a pipeline to mentor a new generation of budding cancer researchers,” said Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “We are thrilled to be the first Cancer Center to support this educational initiative and believe our research faculty will be ideal mentors for the selected students.”

Honoring Local Vets To honor our nation’s bravest, the Harborfields Central School District hosted its annual Jazz Cabaret Night where students and faculty members paid tribute to local veterans with a dinner and student performances on March 26th. To kick off the evening, Harborfields High School seniors served more than 90 veterans and their invited guests a variety of entrée dishes and refreshments.

The Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning was recently named 2015 Western Suffolk BOCES Model Schools Program Administrator of the Year for his effective leadership and commitment to the growth of instructional technology in the district. Since Dr. Manning began his tenure as principal in July 2012, he immediately spearheaded the high school’s use of educational technology. Focused by a driving vision of innovation and improvement, Dr.

Manning’s commitment to the infusion of instructional technology into all aspects of the educational experience inspired the development of various innovative programs. To begin the integrative process, Dr. Manning facilitated the creation of Harborfields High School’s Mobile Computing Club, which began as a group of students who were interested in exploring technology. Within a few short months, the club created the school’s first web-based application called the HF Navigator, which provides users with access to schoolwide notifications and announcements, bell and testing schedules, teacher email addresses, academic learning sites, school calendars and more. Under Dr. Manning’s leadership, all students and faculty received access to Google’s Apps for Education platform.

To supplement this platform, more than 200 Chromebooks were purchase for instructional use in the classrooms. In addition, enrollment in STEM related courses has prospered, earning Harborfields High School a STEM school ranking of 96th in the nation according to US News and World Report’s data based on student performance on STEM related Advanced Placement exams. Harborfields High School Assistant Principal Dr. Jami Goldstein Scherr wrote in her nomination report, “Dr. Manning must be recognized and credited with our school’s instructional technology transformation. His 21st-century vision of education has taken our learning community to new heights as we continue to perform and achieve at the levels of the educational powerhouse that is synonymous with a Harborfields education.”

Pinning Ceremony Set Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th. Alzheimer’s Education On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil

Boyle. The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for

Alzheimer’s Disease. Eileen Kane-Gemmell, MPA, RDN, CDN, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired. Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the

laws and regulations that support resident-centered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first

time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote, guests

enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. The conference was hosted by the Lillian & Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center®. Presenting sponsors included The Bristal Assisted Living and Winthrop University Hospital. SCOPE Awards Dinner Leading Long Island’s public schools to greatness – that was the theme of SCOPE’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. The annual event was part of SCOPE’s celebration of 50 years serving children and their families. More than 140 employees from dozens of school districts across Long Island were honored for their extraordinary contributions and dedication during the 2014-2015 school year. Screening Set On Saturday, May 2nd, the Long Island Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Collaborative of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, will hold the inaugural Long Island Screening Day for Perinatal M o o d and A n x i e t y Disorders Awareness event. The goal of the event is to raise awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety

disorders throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Free screenings will be held at various public locations where new parents frequent. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are common health concerns for many expectant or new mothers. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) can begin anytime up to twelve months after

delivery and is the most common complication related to childbearing. However, the majority who suffer from these medical illnesses go unrecognized and untreated. Women need to know this is treatable and they are not alone. The month of May is officially Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder Awareness Month in

Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Within Nassau County there are at least 3,500 families and in Suffolk County at least 4,000 families are affected by a PMAD each year.
