It’s Spring

The Art League of Long Island’s juried exhibition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” challenged artists to submit their artistic interpretations of motion in 2-D or 3-D mediums. Exhibition Juror Marina Press selected 60 works out of 400 submissions from artists residing in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens who responded to the challenge. The exhibit is on view in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. Marina Press is Associate Director of the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery, NYC. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Ms. Press received her BA in Art History from Pace University and is currently an MA Candidate in Art History and Museum Studies at CUNY. Recently she curated a critically acclaimed exhibition at the Brooklyn Arts Council Gallery entitled “3 Points Define a Surface.” Among the participating artists, the exhibition juror selected six artists to receive awards: Awards of Excellence • Greg Dorata, “Coney in Motion,” digital photograph • Nancy Johnson, “Whoosh!” acrylic and

For the first time in over a decade, members of the Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Mock Trial team, under the advisement of Megan Gieser, earned a spot to compete in the regional competition held at the U.S. District Court in Central Islip. The regional competition features the top 16 schools performing in the presence of a District Court Judge. In recognition of their excellent performance,

the District Court Judge noted the Elwood students for their merits. The team finished in the preliminary round with a successful record. “Our team aimed beyond what was expected and persevered towards excellence,” said Gieser. “I am so very proud of each team member.” Due to their successful season, the team was invited to the annual Civil Law Mock Trial Competition held at

Northport High School on April 15th. The event is hosted in partnership with the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association. At this elite competition, volunteer judges and practicing attorneys will preside over trials, score competitors and afford feedback to students. The district congratulates the Mock Trial team on their successful season.

Cabaret Night To honor the nation’s bravest, the Harborfields Central School District hosted its annual Jazz Cabaret Night on March 23rd, during which students and faculty members paid tribute to local veterans with a dessert reception and musical performances. Members of the Harborfields High School Leadership Club greeted the more than 40 veterans and their invited guests as they arrived to the event. They helped serve those in attendance with a variety of desserts and refreshments while listening to stories and

showing their gratitude to the veterans. Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School students contributed to the event by drawing pictures and writing cards to the veterans, which were displayed on each table. To kick off the evening, Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro afforded words of welcome, followed by Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources Dr. Francesco Ianni calling up the students to introduce themselves. Giving due recognition, Dr. Ianni passed the microphone to each veteran who shared

the branch of military they served. Led by Clare Jackson, members of the high school’s voice ensemble performed the National Anthem, Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, among other selections. The high school instrumental jazz ensemble, under the direction of Daniel Bilawsky, also entertained the audience with a variety of musical numbers. “We have created this event in dedication to all of our veterans within our community,” said Todaro.

Natural Helpers A group of more than 50 Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students and teachers recently attended a weekend retreat to learn and develop the skills needed to be a “natural” helper as part of the Natural Helpers Program. Natural Helpers is a peer-helping program, used nationwide, that serves middle and high school students who want to strengthen their communication and helping skills to better support others and provide

service to their schools and communities. The program is aimed towards students and adults who are already perceived as “natural” helpers and gives them the skills they need to provide help more effectively to the young people who seek them out. For the retreat, students, under the advisement of school psychologist Kristen Karch and social worker Joanna Sepp, traveled to Camp Alvernia in Centerport. During the weekend, students

were trained on ways to detect when a peer may be in trouble and how to respond in a variety of situations including, what professional resource to contact in their school and community when problems exceed their capacity of helping. Through a variety of trust building exercises, students were challenged to break down any existing barriers, such as stereotypes, and work together to complete various tasks and obstacles.

On Thursday, April 21st, the Huntington Town Board will recognize teen poets from the community selected for participation in the Town’s Poetry for the HART Public Art Initiative. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Walt Whitman Birthplace (246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station). The winning teen poets will receive certificates in an award ceremony with members of the Huntington Town Board. Immediately following conclusion of the award ceremony there will be a poetry reading led by poets Alan Semerdjian, Patti Tana, and Steven Licardi at which each of the teen poets selected for the program will read their winning poems. A brief reception will follow. The award ceremony,

reading, and reception are free and open to the public. Writer, musician, and educator Alan Semerdjian’s poems and essays have appeared in over 100 print and online publications and anthologies including Adbusters, Diagram, and Brooklyn Rail. He released a chapbook of poems called An Improvised Device (Lock n Load Press) in 2005 and his first full-length book In the Architecture of Bone (GenPop Books) in 2009. His songs have appeared in television and film and charted on CMJ. He earned his MFA at Goddard College in 2002 and currently teaches English at Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, NY. To participate, students purchased raffle tickets and placed their ticket into bags labeled with the name of a teacher or administrator they wanted to work with. Selected at random, 21 students were assigned to teachers who volunteered to participate in the program. Prior to the event,

students met with the teacher they would be shadowing to organize and plan a lesson. Many students arrived to school dressed the part as a teacher, with some students and teachers coordinating their outfits to match. Funds raised from the event went to support the Class of 2018.

Subsequent to the ceremonies, colorful placards, each bearing a winning poem, will be placed in the interior advertising spaces on buses throughout the HART system. Non-Fiction Explorers As a culmination to their reading and writing unit, second-grade students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District explored different nonfiction topics through student-made projects displayed in the form of an interactive museum. For the unit, students were asked to select one of the following nonfiction “book club” themes that they were most interested

to study: butterflies, planets, plants and the rainforest. While at school, students created two-fold lapbooks that contained facts, pictures and illustrations. At home, they made 2D and 3D projects as a supplement to their lapbooks. During the book club celebration, each room was colorfully decorated to represent one of the four book club categories. For the interactive museum,

the second-graders’ projects were grouped by category and displayed in the classrooms. Separated by nonfiction topic interest, students rotated to each of the classrooms to enjoy their classmates’ projects and learn some new facts. While on their exploration, second-graders completed a worksheet that required them to write at least two new facts they learned at each station.

Glenn High School hosted its first Teacher for a Day, through which students assumed the role and responsibilities of a high school teacher. empowerment, and altruism. The American Heart Association, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity or 75

555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. And counting. Stay tuned for that book. And Buddy’s, of course.

New Superintendent The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education anticipates appointing the district’s new superintendent at its business meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 31st. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Elwood Middle School auditorium. The board’s announcement comes after an extensive search for a new leader after current Superintendent of Schools Peter Scordo announced his pending retirement last summer. The board selected Western Suffolk BOCES to assist in its search, as Western Suffolk BOCES has a demonstrated history of success in helping school districts in this type

of recruiting. In addition, their services come with no additional fee to the district. Western Suffolk BOCES began by gathering community input on the qualifications deemed necessary for the new superintendent to possess. A community survey was administered and Western Suffolk BOCES conducted meetings with numerous community organizations, including civic groups, PTAs, local nonprofits and the public library, among others. The survey, along with the community meetings, provided the board of education with valuable perspectives in terms of the leader our residents desire for Elwood.

“Ultimately, we were fortunate to have a large pool of extremely qualified candidates express interest in becoming our next leader,” said Board of Education President Andrew L. Kaplan. “Based on the data from the survey and community meetings, we narrowed the field to those candidates that most resembled the qualities, background and experience indicated by the community as its criteria for a new superintendent. From there, the board conducted numerous interviews and has ultimately selected a new superintendent that we are extremely pleased to introduce to the community this Thursday evening.”

Walk for a Wish For the 10th consecutive year, Washington Drive Primary and Thomas J. Lahey schools will jointly host its annual Walk for a Wish fundraising drive to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants of the event are invited to raise donations and walk around the track at Harborfields High School during this year’s Walk for a Wish on Saturday, April 16th, from 9 to 10 a.m. All of the donations collected for the walk will be used to grant the wish of 14 year-old Joseph, a child from Huntington

Station who struggles with congenital heart defects. During the WDPS and TJL kick off assembly, students learned that their collective efforts will allow Joseph and his family to go to Disney World, something young Joseph has always wanted to do. Sponsored jointly by the Walk for a Wish Committee of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, the Acts of Kindness Committee at Washington Drive Primary School and the schools’ respective PTAs, the fundraising event will take place rain

24-Hour Hotline to quality healthcare facilities for a host of treatment options for substance use disorders. LICADD’s full-service substance abuse hotline will serve as what officials called a lifeline to residents battling drug addiction, which lawmakers have been struggling to address across Long Island for years. To get there, the county teamed up with community partners in the substance abuse field to allow residents to call to get screenings, referrals and follow-ups. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will operate the 24-hour hotline and direct callers to those resources. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families, officials said. “Like many places in this country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” County Executive Steve Bellone said in a statement. “We need to tackle this epidemic on

all fronts - including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.” Bellone said his administration has made it a top priority to “explore and launch new, evidence-based tools” to help address the region’s fight against heroin and opioid use. “The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their families,” he said. The hotline will become live by April 1st, Bellone said, and the Suffolk County health department will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community. LICADD recognizes that individuals and families in crisis with SUD require immediate and quality support, assessment and referrals 24 hours a day. LICADD clinicians are hypervigilant in our professional understanding that the time to seek treatment is “now”! Often times “now” happens after 9pm and before 8am, including weekends and holidays. The window of

opportunity where an individual and/or family is willing to seek support and treatment if of a finite duration, and without immediate consultation, that window of opportunity closes under the pathology of denial, obsession and fear which often defines substance use disorders. LICADD has been on the front lines of substance use counseling, screening, brief intervention and referrals to treatment on Long Island since 1956 and we are pleased to offer this new dimension of service to better meet the needs of Long Islanders struggling with substance use disorders, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
