As a professor of management in a large business school, I have taught hundreds of students the principles of strategy and tactics.

The New Interdisciplinary School (NIS), an innovative early childhood learning center, located in Yaphank, is holding its 22nd annual golf outing, at St. George’s Golf & Country Club on June 18th. This golf outing, honoring Tom Emde, a parent of an NIS alumnus, is the nonprofit preschool’s largest annual fundraiser. The proceeds from the outing will help enhance their animal assisted intervention program for students with special needs. “We are extremely grateful for the donations we’ve received at NIS’s previous golf outings, which enabled us to implement our Animal Assisted Intervention Program for students with special needs and look forward to enhancing this program. Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. H u n t i n g t o n Councilwoman Joan Cergol, at the March 20th Town Board Meeting, recognized the Northport High School Winter Track Team for a series of accomplishments, including winning the Suffolk County team championship and the 4-by-800-meter relay in the State competition. The team, which has about 20 members, captured the County championship on February 5th, earning the title for the first time since 2014. This was a real team effort with several members making significant contributions. Northport won the 3,200-meter run, the 1,000-meter run and

the 600-meter run. They took second place in the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 meter relays. A month later, on March 5th, the team competed in the State championships in Staten Island. The 4-by800 relay team, which finished second in the County meet, took first place in the public school championship, and team member Isaiah Claiborne won the 1,000 meter run. Five days later, the relay team placed third in the national championships, earning All-America honors for its four team members. At the March 20th meeting, Councilwoman Cergol presented proclamations signed by

the entire Town Board to the team, which is coached by Jason Strom, Nick Gueits and Bill Miller; to the members of the 4-by800 relay team; and to Isaiah Claiborne. All of the team members received certificates. “These were amazing accomplishments by a dedicated, hard-working group of students,” Councilwoman Cergol said. “They and their parents should be very proud of what they have done and we all look forward to even more great things from them in the future.” Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.

The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Councilwoman Joan Cergol, at the March 20th Town Board meeting, honored Melville Assistant Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld for his quick actions that saved the life of a motorist on Northern State Parkway March 12th. Mr. Bernfeld, a New York City police officer as well as a 15-year volunteer firefighter, was driving to work that morning when he saw the taillights of a car sticking out in the woods on the parkway, near the Round Swamp Road exit. Leaving his vehicle to investigate, he discovered a car that had crashed into a tree and flipped over on its passenger side. Getting closer, he saw that a man was trapped in

the car, hanging from his seat belt, and that flames were coming from the driver’s side dashboard. The trapped driver was screaming that hot plastic from the melting dashboard was dripping onto his leg. Mr. Bernfeld radioed for help, and then went back to his car and got a seat-belt cutter and a fire extinguisher. Savor these beautiful (and edible) flowers C ultivating beautiful blooms is a popular pastime for gardeners near and far. While gazing at a yard full of vibrant colors or enjoying the aroma of freshly cut blooms is enough for many gardeners, others may want to embrace a long-enduring tradition — growing edible ﬂowers.

Cooking with edible flowers is a trend that has endured for centuries. According to Fleurs Gourmandes, the first recorded history of edible flowers occurred in 140 BC. Use of calendula in salads dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Victorian-era candied flowers and flowerencrusted sweets took edible flowers to new heights. Today, nothing may make a meal seem more gourmet than the inclusion of flower petals in the recipe. Of course, before delving into the expanded world of cooking using edible blooms, some notes of caution should first be mentioned. Avoid flowers that may have been sprayed with fungicides, herbicides or insecticides. To verify safety, only use edible flowers grown specifically for this purpose, not flowers picked from

roadsides or from landscapes. Secondly, remember that not all flowers are edible. Some can be poisonous or cause severe gastrointestinal upset when consumed. That means all flowers should be carefully researched prior to experimenting with them in the kitchen. To begin growing — and eating — edible flowers, refer to this list of varieties deemed safe and be careful to double-check against allergies and any interactions with medications prior to use. Allium: These are blossoms from the allium family, which include garlic, chives and leeks. These flowers can be used to add flavor to foods.

Chamomile: This plant features small, daisy-type ﬂowers that can be used in treats and teas. Basil Blossoms: It may be customary to pinch off the blossoms of basil, which come in colors from white to lavender in order to stimulate growth of the leaves of the plant. However, the blossoms, which are more mild than the leaves, can be tasty as well.

Fennel: Just like the plant itself, the ﬂowers of fennel have a subtle licorice ﬂavor.

Calendula: Sometimes known as “poor man’s saffron,” this yellow ﬂower in the

How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the ﬁrst step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top. Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and ﬁnding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal.

James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District held a ribboncutting ceremony for the newly finished multisensory environment room on March 19th. Multisensory environments, which benefit children who need help developing sensory, communication and motor skills, are becoming more popular in public schools across the country. This room in particular was made possible by many members of the Elwood community who donated time and materials. Community member Anthony A. Lauto, who worked with school psychologist Adam Goudreau to get this project off the ground, started the ceremony by cutting the red ribbon over the door to the room. Three years ago, Mr. Goudreau was inspired to create a sensory room and recruited the help of

Mr. Lauto, who has two sons in the Elwood School District, one of which is in the district’s special education program. “Positive changes within a community always require someone to be driving the train, and in this case, it was Mr. Lauto,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. All of those in attendance, including Dr. Bossert, Principal Denise Toscano, Board of Education President Julia Fried, board members Heather Mammolito and Deborah Weiss, were invited inside to see the room and to recognize those who donated time and materials to make the room possible. “Once a tree grows, you can’t bend it,” said Mr. Lauto, in the midst of his recognitions. “We’re investing in the little ‘trees’ in this school to help them grow—and this room is the catalyst to provide

significant therapeutic results for these kids.” This new room contains state-of-the art equipment such as KETRA lighting, which can change color and intensity, an LED bubble tube, fiber optic spray lighting setups, platform swings, customized wall mural and padded flooring. The Elwood Booster club, as well as local businesses such as the Lighting Gallery, Inc., The Honest Audio Video & Lighting Co., Camber Strategies, LLC. and Impact Graphics donated all of the funds and equipment to make the multi-sensory environment possible. All this equipment can serve to amplify different types of therapy, including occupational, speech and physical therapies. “This room took a lot of love and work, and I can’t thank all those who helped enough for making our dream come true,” said Principal Dr. Denise Toscano.

The Northport High School art club hosted an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser to benefit the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry on March 20th. “Empty Bowls” is an international grass roots effort to raise funds for local food charities and educate people around issues of poverty and hunger in their community. Each year, art club facilitator and event organizer Linda Johansen applies for a grant from the Altice Connects Charity Champions. Once selected for the grant, the organization gives the art club $250 to get started on the project. In addition, the organization donates $1,000 to the charity of the club’s choice, which is the

Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry - a local food pantry that provides food for more than 150 families in the community. In order to bring awareness to all the those in the world who are hungry, art club members, student volunteers and members of the community created handmade ceramic bowls in preparation for their annual soup dinner. More than 70 volunteers made this year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser possible. Those who attended to support the cause donated $10 for soup, and were able to keep one of the 400 the beautifully crafted ceramic bowls as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. “For a lot of my students,

putting on this event is an eye opener,” said Ms. Johansen, “understanding that it could be a neighbor, a teacher or a friend that needs help.” In addition to the $1,000 donation by Charity Champions, the fundraiser itself raised approximately $5,000. Aerodynamics & Airplanes Students at Norwood Avenue Elementary School in the NorthportEast Northport School District who have interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics turned their curiosity into action through the school’s STEM club. This year, fifth-grade leaders within the club planed every activity and invited younger students to come and learn. Students have learned to do things such as code with “Scratch,” build stomp rockets, and most recently, learn about the aerodynamics behind AERODYNAMICS & AIRPLANES - Students in Norwood Avenue’s STEM club paper airplanes. “For this activity, put a lesson in aerodynamics to the test when flying their paper airplanes on March students chose second23rd. grade students to teach,” said club facilitator and librarian Linda Dickman, “because many of them have younger siblings in second grade and they vocalized that they thought paper airplanes would be a good lesson for their learning styles.” At each beginner, intermediate, and hard paper airplane station, a fifth-grade leader was present, leading the lesson and showing the younger students how to craft airplanes, explaining the benefit of each different design. When finished, students tested their airplanes in the hallway, seeing just how far the lesson in

aerodynamics would take them, and measuring the distance that each plane flew. “Paper airplanes are a good lesson in STEM because you have to fold the paper in all the right spots to get it to lift, to spin, and to go far,” said fifth-grade student Liam. Students enjoyed the activity, and tried not to be disheartened when their plane didn’t soar as far as they’d hoped. “If you fail, that’s okay, as long as you keep trying,” said Ms. Dickman, “because most great thinkers fail many times before they succeed.”

More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island. Polar Dip Series Raises Funds The iconic Camp Sunshine Polar Dip Series recently concluded and raised $217,000 this winter. Local teams from the Northeast to the MidAtlantic participated in local dips, plunging into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, lakes, rivers and several different polar pools! “We’re thankful that we can still count on people to unpack their swimsuits each winter and take a quick dip into freezing cold water to support Camp Sunshine,” said Michael Smith, Development Director at Camp Sunshine.“ A couple seconds of cold are nothing in comparison to what Camp Sunshine families face on a daily basis. This is an easy way to help support your community and we

saw a lot of new faces this year!” Funds were raised by teams and individuals who committed to taking the icy plunge. In total, 552 participants registered to participate in one of the nine dips. “As incredible as it is to think that 552 people were able to raise more than $217,000, the fundraising component is just part of the goal of these events,” said Michael Katz, Executive Director at Camp Sunshine. “Equally as important is the awareness we bring to each area where we host these events. Our goal has always been to reach out to even more families who can utilize our services. The polar dips provide a great platform to help spread the word.”

The funds enable children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to enjoy the award-winning Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Maine free-ofcharge. At Camp, they join other families on similar journeys and experience the benefits of empathy and encouragement, recovery and recreation, and hope and inspiration. In all, 23 illness-specific sessions will be hosted at Camp Sunshine in 2018.
