Equine Therapy County Executive Bellone announces an agreement for Warrior Ranch Foundation to utilize former beagle club property. Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy. This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in re-purposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) corporation.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

A Burst of Magic
American author and illustrator Patricia Polacco visited Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District on March 15. Ms. Polacco is known for her award-winning books such as the “Keeping Quilt,” “Thank You Mr. Falkner” and “Chicken Sunday.” Ms. Polacco captivated the students with stories of her life and how they affected her writing, and
even brought in elements of her books —l ike her family’s keeping quilt, and a piece of a “magical” meteor that landed on her family farm — for children to see. Along with inspirational stories from her life, she also shared some of her life’s hardship. Ms. Polacco strongly encouraged students to never let people discourage them from pursing their dreams. “Real poverty is when
you run out of ideas and run out of hope,” Ms. Polacco told them. “You’re never poor if you have those two things.” At the end of each assembly, the students laid their hand on the meteor piece and make a wish as they exited. Some students bounced with excitement as they walked away, claiming to have truly felt a burst of magic.
Exceptional Student Musicians
Nine Harborfields High School student musicians were recently selected to perform in the 15th Annual LIU Post Band Festival on April 12 at the Tilles Center. Participants in this festival include the LIU Post Wind Symphony and select high school musicians from across the New York metropolitan
area. More than 200 exceptional studentmusicians from 40 different high schools across Long Island were nominated for this ensemble, and only approximately 120 were chosen to participate. Harborfields students Danielle Barber, Victoria Bell, Jared Buchholtz, Catherine Capodanno, Ty
Ellenbogen, Katie Farkas, Michael Mank, Tiffany Rounsavall, and Thomas Walden will rehearse and perform four pieces under the direction of IU Post Director of Wind Studies Dr. James McRoy and 2019 Composer-in-Residence Dr. Jack Stamp.

New MTA RAIL Act
Long Island Senate Majority delegation announced the ‘MTA RAIL Act’ at the Hicksville LIRR station. The MTA RAIL Act will overhaul the MTA, its operations, and introduce much needed reforms to the way the MTA operates. They announced a five-point platform that includes an independent, forensic audit of the MTA, giving riders a voting voice on the MTA Board. The five-point platform includes: an independent,
c o m p r e h e n s i v e forensic audit of the MTA’s procurements, improvement to long-term capital planning, providing riders a voting voice on the MTA board, overhauling the way the MTA analyzes itself, and ensuring MTA revenues are more likely to go to New York businesses. It will also modernize the MTA and work to bring reform, transparency, and improved service to the millions of MTA riders.

Thirty-three business students from Northport High School recently traveled to Rochester in order to compete in the DECA State Career Development Conference. While each state-qualifying participant competed against more than 2,500 other students, Northport
students Olivia Caulfield, Faith Gillin, Ayla Lerner, Tage Oster and Katerina Wettengel were each named one of the top 10 in their category. DECA, a nationwide business club, prepares student leaders and emerging entrepreneurs to be business-world ready.
This conference included competitive events by specific areas of focus: business management and administration, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality and tourism, marketing, and personal financial literacy.
Named Scholar Athletes Northport High School’s winter varsity athletic teams have once again all been named New York State Scholar Athlete Teams by the New York Stat Public High School Athletic Association

Elwood-John H. Glenn’s American Sign Language program has been steadily growing through the years — starting with one small class and now boasting more than 90 students across three high school levels and one college level. Students enjoy having this language to explore, and are vocal about the importance and necessity of having people who can interpret for hearing impaired individuals. “People are often inclined to gravitate toward taking Spanish
because that seems like a more practical route to take,” said Megan Hovanec, a level-two ASL student, “but that’s not necessarily the case. With the amount of deaf Americans in our country, ASL is something that everyone should have a basic knowledge of.” Meagan plans to double major in interpreting and nursing in college so she can use ASL in the medical field. The community of ASL students at John H. Glenn enjoy giving back to the deaf community each year
by volunteering at the Fall Festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, participate in districtwide events like International Night, and put on some of their own events, such as ASL Idol. “Sometimes all it takes is someone setting an example of something they’re passionate about,” said level-four ASL student Victoria Didiego. “I used to practice signing with my cousin because she studied it in college, and now I want to pursue full time interpreting.”

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Your Thoughts Are Making You Stressed “Start by doing what’s necessary. Then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - St. Francis of Assisi
and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly
spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have

Northport High School senior Sofia Sawchuk has been volunteering at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for the past two years and recently helped the hospital bring their mission to life through art. Their core value I-CARE — an acronym for integrity, compassion, accountability,
responsibility and excellence — was expressed by way of Sofia’s artistic design and hung in the medical office’s executive board room. Her mission-driven artwork was honored at a special gathering on Feb. 15. The hospital expressed their gratitude towards Sofia for her creativity and heart for volunteering.
“I thought about the mission statement and considered what images would best marry to each piece,” said Sofia. “The design is what they mean to me and how I hope they would speak to others who may visit the hospital...and I’m so thrilled to see this project come to life.”

Careers in Civil Engineering The fourth-graders in Northport-East Northport School District’s Investigate program recently met with civil engineers from a private firm to culminate a unit on structural engineering. This program, comprised of approximately 20 students across the district, is for students who show an aptitude for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) — providing them with more in-depth opportunities to explore those areas. Professional engineers
from Manhattan-based firm Stantect, Maqbool Mohammed and Chris Yorlano, visited the students to discuss bridge inspection and repair process procedures, as well as the rules and regulations that effect inspection work conducted by the company. The engineers conducted a demonstration of equipment used in the field to inspect and repair bridges and selected two students to try on pieces of equipment that are necessary to complete rope access inspection work. The students learned that
using a harness and other safety equipment when working and inspecting bridges at great heights is known as the “fall arrest system.” The students also learned about bridge inspection work in the tri-state area, how often all bridges whether big or small need to be inspected, and about Stantec’s available high school mentorships. Students enjoyed the visit and some even vocalized envisioning civil engineering careers in the future.
